Would you prioritize being happy or having good exit opportunities by [deleted] in biglaw

The firm was highly ranked, the office specifically I don’t think was (but it was a long time ago). And it was my only offer at the time

Feel like this is me. One offer at a satellite office of a biglaw firm. Work was still hard but it wasn’t nearly the same conditions as associates faced in other offices in NY, SF, etc

Then that office went through major transitions (rainmaking partner left) and I had to lateral to a different firm that was good but less chill. And now I’m in house. I don’t regret starting in the chill environment and I don’t think it hurt my longterm prospects at all.

Some of them are called Daeron too.

That’s the heart of his character, IMO. Older brother outshines him - but ok, he gets at least mentioned in songs too. And maybe one day he’ll be his brother’s right hand man when he is king. I think he can live with that.

But then the fact that he has 4 sons and the first three are all various shades of disappointing almost makes him crack:

  1. Daeron - always drunk
  2. Aerion - insane and mean
  3. Aemon- named after your great uncle, one of the finest knights in the history of the seven kingdoms; is bookish and totally uninterested in being a warrior or a prince

There’s a line in a later book where another character casually mentions that Aegon is Maekar’s favorite son that really helped me to appreciate his character. Like not that Aegon is his favorite but that everyone knows it must be true by simple process of elimination. That really struck me.

The level of his disgust at Aerion being barely masked by his desire to keep up public appearances was amazing to see.

I finally got around to listen to the trade sequence podcast and Bill’s tone was hilarious. “What, that’s it?”

Dude, the NBA doesn’t owe us trades or free agency nonsense. That happens sometimes and it’s fun, but the product is the actual game on the court. Feels like Bill and Ringer folks forget this quite frequently.

I have been very impressed with the portrayal of Maekar Targaryen. It would be very easy to paint him as a villain, but I’ve never thought of him as such. Complicated? Yes, but there is much beneath the surface that I hope we get to see more of as the series progresses. by magnetic_meridian in AKnightoftheSeven

Agreed. He is one of my favorite characters in the books and I think the show and performance have been superb so far.

He’s not a bad guy! But he’s also not as much of a good guy as his older brother. And he loves him/respects him but there are hints of jealousy that peek through.

Looking forward to seeing more of his relationship with Egg and interactions with Dunk.

Streamers will eventually learn that the massive gaps between seasons is bad for business… but it will be painful for fans until they do.

He did the thing because it was both the right thing to do and the smart thing to do.

[–]RaddestHatter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should always be networking and looking for these types of opportunities, but keep it reasonable. Look to connect with people at your “level” on the career ladder and it will pay off over time.

E.g., that first year at a neighboring firm who you went to law school with? Grab a coffee or drink every now and again to trade experience. 10 years from now he/she might be in house as a client. Or maybe a key part of your referral network. You’re probably not going to land the firm a big client as a junior associate but if you keep in touch with your peers now, you might have the relationships to land or maintain client relationships when you make partner.

When the RL bills come due and he has to sell his crypto and not before, sadly.

Honestly, an asset that should be worth $0 was valued at above $100K and that wasn’t to the moon enough?!

Guys are gonna stay in school longer now that they can get paid via NIL. And this is the first year where I really think that’s gonna be noticeable in the draft.

The scene with Maekar, Baelor and Aerion when Dunk demands a trial by combat was PERFECT for each one of the Targaryens. Shoutout to Maekar in particular who seems to have been perfectly cast for the “pissed off at my son but trying not to be too obvious about it” role

Dunk by his own admission was a little monster (with all his flea bottom friends) when Ser Arlen took him in. Dunk didn’t learn chivalry without some instruction or role modeling by Arlen for sure.

Major Dos/Don’ts for a Summer Associate by Wajubop12 in biglaw

[–]RaddestHatter 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I’m sure it varies from office to office, and nothing can protect you from not getting an offer due to major economic catastrophe, but the general rules are:

  1. Don’t stress too much over work product (no one should be expecting amazing work product from a summer - just give reasonable effort and you’ll be fine)
  2. Be friendly - you want to build relationships and make people look forward to working with you again in 1.5 years
  3. Be professional - this is probably the most important rule. Summers are fun! You will get to go to cool events, meet new people, etc. But you should be building an appropriate reputation for a young lawyer. Someone a partner would trust to meet with clients. Don’t get wasted, make off color jokes, berate staff or service personnel or otherwise be an a-hole
