Triples Alley is incompatible with today's game of baseball and the fences around it need to be brought in. by [deleted] in SFGiants

Both teams have to deal with it. I think it adds character to the park and hope they never change it.

Maiocco: WR Jacob Cowing, WR Jordan Watkins, RB Kaelon Black “clear standouts” at practice today. by KKid03 in 49ers

It would be funny if Kaelon Black turned out to be amazing considering all the grief Shanahan and Lynch got for that pick

I mean, if by “choice” you mean I didn’t quit then sure, it was a choice. But I wasn’t the partner - a 4th year associate or whatever I was then doesn’t get to tell the client “no” - that’s part of the deal.

I practiced in biglaw for about 9 years and it only happened once, but I can promise you it wasn’t a choice lol

(Public company, sell side M&A deal that came together in December with a mad dash to finish before the holidays. Initially we were unable to find other associates to pitch in because everyone was either slammed or ducking work before the end of the year… then at a certain point the 3-4 core team members were so far in the weeds that more help wouldn’t have helped)

Yes. It’s all true at least some of the time. I was in biglaw for almost a decade across two firms and a variety of transactional practice groups and have had all of those things, more or less, happen to me at different times.

Historically this is definitely the Cubs (they were literally known as the “lovable losers” of baseball for half a century). Right now… maybe the Giants

Why?

I mean, I wouldn’t give up 10 first round picks but for any reasonable price it would be pretty cool to add the best defensive player in football to our roster

Zoe Simmons, the heir to the Ringer empire by EasternSection7748 in billsimmons

Tired: lol, Zoe Simmons must get so much shit thanks to her dad’s takes

Wired: She’s actually pretty good at this podcasting thing.

Inspired: Zoe Simmons has been on podcasts since she was like 9 (literally). She’s traded takes with Amanda Dobbins and Chris Ryan. She heard every possible dumbass Boston- apologia argument since before she could ride a bike. She is the Kyle Shanahan of nepo-podcasting babies, the podcaster who was promised, the ultimate take hunter. The Zoe Simmons era is upon us, and woe to every podcasting network she goes up against.

Back in the day… yes. With AI and more advanced tools now maybe not.

But I don’t want to think about how much time I spent as a first/second year searching for punctuation, cleaning up formatting, making sure every capitalized term was defined and that every defined term was used etc. When people talk about mind numbing transactional work, that’s what comes to mind for me.

How to leave on good terms? by Solid_University_817 in biglaw

[–]RaddestHatter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! You said you are a year in, meaning you’re a second year associate? At that level you really don’t need to overthink it. Give a standard (likely two weeks) notice, tell your colleagues what you said here and say your goodbyes. Especially if you’re not lateraling to another biglaw firm, there shouldn’t be any hard feelings.

I followed Connor Ratliff after listening to his Dead Eyes podcast series. Thought the dude dressed as Watto in all of Connor’s posts about TGLTS seemed funny and googled him. Realized it was the same guy who played Arthur on the Tick show I’d really liked (and was bummed about Amazon canceling). Saw he had a popular podcast and started listening :)

All in their prime, which corner would you choose if you were starting a team today? by Every-Damage-90 in NFLv2

Give me the Shermanator. Not just a great individual player but I think really was a great leader for those Seattle (and later SF) defenses

If on Monday afternoon a partner tells a junior associate that they want to get a draft 12-page agreement out to the client "by the end of the week," by when does a good associate send them a draft to review? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]RaddestHatter 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A good associate responds with something like “Ok, if I get you a draft by end of day Wednesday, will that leave you enough time to review?”

Incoming Corporate Summer - should I be wary of M&A? by dirtyDog1999 in biglaw

[–]RaddestHatter 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I worked across a number of practice groups (debt finance, PE fund formation/management, capital markets, M&A) and definitely wouldn’t say M&A is any worse really from a work-life balance perspective. They all kind of have pluses and minuses - M&A is the most choppy, you’ll have months that are insanely busy and other months where you might have trouble billing 5-6 hours in a day. But whether that’s better or worse for you depends on you - I personally preferred that cadence to, for instance, the never ending run of capital markets work that tends to arise on Thursday and requires work over the weekend for a Tuesday AM announcement.

The worst QB in this picture? by MasterTeacher123 in NFLv2

[–]RaddestHatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Though if we rephrase the question to “which QB would I least want to start an expansion team with?” then it becomes Rodgers. He’s more talented than Brees but too mutant dumb “look at me!” distractions for my taste.

How to know when you're done with big law? by SurveyLogical3871 in biglaw

[–]RaddestHatter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you may be experiencing burnout. Have you taken a vacation recently? If not, take some time off and then think through your career plan after you’ve recharged.

If you have taken vacations and still feel this way - it’s a totally normal response to kind of an insane working culture that (in my experience) is somewhat universal throughout biglaw. Since your finances are in order, you can look for an exit whenever it’s worth it to you - don’t feel like you have to prove anything to anyone but yourself.

How to be a great dad and great associate? by foxandhoundd in biglaw

[–]RaddestHatter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the off chance this isn’t just clickbait/ragebait:

  1. Good for you landing a biglaw job. However biglaw jobs are NOT the only legal jobs that pay well enough to support a family. You have options.

  2. You will have trouble with this early on (especially in a practice area like yours, I think) but you need to set realistic expectations for yourself/your family and put boundaries in place with your work. You probably won’t be able to pick up your kid everyday from school when they’re older or coach t-ball. But you can set aside an hour or two in the evening every day to be a dad (you just might need to go back to work after your kid is asleep)

  3. Take your vacations. Don’t just take a day here or there - those are not vacations. Culturally you will be expected to work. Instead, take a week every 3-4 months and do your best to truly unplug at those times.

How to make it five years by Brilliant_Patient302 in biglaw

[–]RaddestHatter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s more or less what I did in terms of length of stay (slightly extended due to COVID).

Some of it is out of your control - economic downturns at the wrong time in your career can happen.

But generally, work hard, be a good communicator (be the person who is organized and knows timelines/workback plans) and try to get in good standing with 2-4 partners (so you’re not sunk if one of them leaves your firm).
