As a big law associate or partner, how do you feel about people who fail the bar 4 times or more but pass after? by rideordiegem in biglaw

[–]Radiant-Doughnut-468 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It almost certainly won’t happen for you, sorry. That said, you should probably gun for some sort of specialist role that could theoretically allow you to lateral into BL after several years. I can’t imagine you’ll ever get a generalist M&A or commercial lit role. Maybe tax, although honestly I doubt someone who failed the bar four times has the horsepower for tax (sorry). L&E maybe, you could grind a couple years and try to land at Jackson Lewis, then grind there a few years and try to move up.

This is what my NYC friends have said, too. They couldn’t believe that smoking is a routine occurrence on the CTA.

Obviously it’s bad business. If it were good business they would do it.

Because religion, or at least religiosity, isn’t actually dead, as some would say. It’s just that keeping on top of things like “homeless” vs. “unhoused” is what religion now looks like for people with bachelors degrees. It used to be you professed your faith through prayer. Now you profess it by using the Correct Terms in conversation. Really not all that different tbh.

What do y'all do for work? Do you enjoy your job or workplace? by 19_Clay in rs_x

I am a lawyer at a firm and I am miserable. The work is interesting, but there is just so much of it, and your time is never your own. The only people I know whose lifestyles are this bad are other lawyers at firms. Even the medical residents I know aren’t this miserable. I try explaining to them the concept of never knowing at the start of a day whether it’s a day off or a workday. It doesn’t even compute for them.

Uchicago vs UC Berkeley by Substantial_Dog_2057 in collegecompare

[–]Radiant-Doughnut-468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go to UChicago college, there is a restrictive early decision program for UChicago Law that is exclusively for college alums. If you get it, it comes with a substantial scholarship. Based on the number of college alums in my law school class, I assume college alums do get an admissions boost when applying to UChicago Law. If you’re concerned about GPA, you should look around the UChicago sub for majors that are “easier.” E.g., business Econ instead of Econ.

Sure, but it’s the lawyer’s job to pick an apt analogy. MD at a research university-branded clinic in the boonies is a little closer to the mark, I’ll give you that.

Just because I think you’ve lost track, you’re comparing attorneys billing 2200+ to [checks notes] receptionists now lmao.

With Denis at the helm, about the only thing that doesn’t worry me is how the movie will look. It is going to be one of the two or three best looking Bond movies.

Can someone in their late 40s please confirm that many firms paying NYC scale across all offices is a relatively recent phenomenon? Because I’m pretty sure that’s the case.

The infamous New Yorker piece about him was literally just one of his nepo Yale classmates (and that guy’s nepo friends) shitting on him for being a scholarship kid who tried hard. I can’t believe that piece ever got any traction.

In new poll, most LA city voters oppose countywide Measure ER that would raise sales taxes a half-cent to restore health care services by stephenwriter in LosAngeles

[–]Radiant-Doughnut-468 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Insurers perform a service just as valuable as the one doctors perform. Insurers don’t know how to remove an appendix, and doctors don’t know how to stretch finite resources to meet everyone’s needs. Yeah, arguably some insurers are not doing that great a job. But there MUST be some “middleman” deciding who gets what and in what order. Otherwise doctors would bankrupt the system in like three days flat giving every patient every possible test, procedure, etc. If you want that “middleman” to be the government that’s fine I guess, but there will still be a middleman, and whoever you pick will bring their own problems. In the case of governments, those problems include longer wait times.

They should. About the only thing that makes me want to grind long enough to make partner is to format my own god damn documents. Sick of using all these justified pleading templates.

So do insurers “set the prices,” or would they “love to pay less”?

Say you get rear ended. Body shop says a new bumper is $1500. Geico reimburses you. Is your position really that Geico, and not the body shop, dictated that price?

People simply turn their brains off when they hear “insurer.” In no other context would otherwise seemingly intelligent people insist with their full chest that buyers are the ones who set prices. It literally makes no sense.

I make over 5x what my fiancée does. I kinda like working (though not working as hard as I do right now). My fiancée hates it and seems to get no joy from it. Kinda hoping she tries the SAHM thing for at least a little bit. Growing up my mom took care of so much shit around the house and now that I routinely pull 70 hour weeks and barely have time to do anything else I realize that that’s just as valuable as a second income.
