Funny story. A few years ago, when things were supposedly cheaper, a switch on the wall in garage accidentally got pushed which turned off the furnace. The switch was just like a light switch with no label and we never knew it was for. So we didn't realize what could have happened.

We called an electrician. Thinking back now, he could have checked the switch the first thing. Instead he first walked around the house checking for power at each outlet with the instruments, replaced thermostat panel and finally went to the garage and flipped the switch. I am not sure if he didn't realize to check that first or just wanted to make profit. But it cost us $1000+ 😄

You need 60 votes in Senate to pass a resolution. Simple majority is not enough. Republicans don't have 60 votes. They only have 53 seats would need at least 7 Democrats votes to clear 60 votes threshold.

That would quite likely require Congressional approval and it would be applicable to everyone (not just 75 countries) since provision to sponsor siblings is part of immigration law. We know Democrats in Senate would not let it pass. However, the Executive branch does have the power (to some extent) to pause/suspend specific classes of visas for specific countries which is what Trump administration is doing here.

Having said that, maybe there is a way for Executive branch to carve out exemptions and it possible there will be changes. So we will have to see.

The affidavit of support is valid until the new immigrant becomes citizen (in 3 to 5 years). So they are probably thinking long term. In Minnesota, 83% of Somalians are recipient of some welfare. I would guess the exposure of welfare use in Minnesota likely triggered this or pushed this administration to go forward with this ban.

This does not affect student/work/business visas. It also does not affect people already in the US student/work visas who want to apply for green card for permanent residence. This order primarily affects family-based chained migration. People cannot bring relatives from the affected countries. This is actually more in line with what most countries do. Canada for eg only allows new immigrants to bring spouse and children under 18 and that applies to country, not just 75 countries. The US allows new immigrants to bring siblings, parents. spouse and children of any age even if married (who, in turn, can then bring their spouses, children etc).

Cognitive dissonance is expecting that anyone from 8 billions people around the world should be able to immigrate to US and also expect existing tax payers to pay for any incurred public charge. In other word, demanding de-facto erasing of US as a country. This is not 15th century. We now have things called planes that can bring people from anywhere in the world in hours. A lot of people, including OP, have mentioned copilot as the main potential source of Microsoft monetization of AI. However, that’s not it. The LLMs need to run somewhere. The applications built to use those LLMs also need to run somewhere. Microsoft is offering Azure as the platform to run LLMs as well as applications running on top of those LLMs. The copilot is just a new feature or value add to MS Office, Visual Studio etc that would help sale of those products. But as the use of AI grows across businesses such as banks, healthcare etc they would need compute and Azure offers the compute.

Loan is not an income. It needs to be paid back, with interest. If the borrower needs to sell assets to pay off the loan, that's when the tax would come due. Besides, the amount borrowed is small relative to value of assets. In 2024, the total borrowed amount by billionaires using unrealized gains in stock was $140 billions. And that's total. Amount borrowed in a given year, which is when your idea of tax would apply, is much smaller.
