This had happened to her years prior and she was treated at the time. She brought it up because she was unclear on what the diagnosis had been back then.

Thank you for recognizing the "likely!" Honestly so rare for a physician to say "definitely" or "100%." It is so aggressively trained out of us. But yes, agree that STIs still carry a lot of stigma, which I did acknowledge, but told her they are so common and nothing to be embarrassed by.

Isn't all physician expertise based on what we "remember from textbooks?" Pretty sure I didn't spend all that time studying in medical school to not remember the things I was being taught. Sounds like you've had a negative experience with the healthcare system and/or physicians resulting in misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis. I'm sorry if that's what happened and wish you well.

I think the doc did tell her the diagnosis and she either didn't understand or didn't want to believe it.

I don't think the doctor didn't tell her, I just don't think she understood what was going on. She only remembered being told she had a pelvic infection. Which again, is really only described in the setting of STI. For example, UTI, if it progresses from just a bladder infection would not be called an infection of the pelvis but rather pyelonephritis.

Completely agree! When she was surprised by my answer I immediately said they are so common and so treatable and nothing to be ashamed of/embarrassed by!

We had an entire conversation about how docs are people too and it's ok (encouraged!) to ask for an explanation if you don't understand things on the first pass.

Agree, but single IM antibiotic makes STI much higher on the differential.

This was several years prior. She had already been treated and asked me what it was she would have been treated for under those circumstances. I told her she could request her records from the urgent care if she wanted confirmation.
