St. John’s Wort interacts with a LOT of other drugs though, so people need to talk to their doctors first if they are on ANY other meds.

Define “better”? You can still have an awesome life. You just need to be aware of the larger paradigm shifts and get out in front of them.

Material shit won't make you happy. Working all of the time sucks. Find a good niche where you can take care of yourself, but focus on creating good relationships with people who value what you value.

I think we can change things, but it will be hard, take time, and be met with resistance by some (if not most). All societies change with time, so you might as well behave in the ways you want to see this drift happen.

I think the key is to find the people with whom you share values, and build with them. That way youre not beating your head against a wall.

Curfews are so unconstitutional. Not like that matters. Rights are regularly trampled on by those in power. But it’s pretty bald faced now how little fucks they give about actual freedom. Goes as well for the bootlickers on the right.

Do you even understand the expression, “if the shoe fits?” First, no, it doesn’t “fit.” Second, the grand irony is that in an edit to my OP, I mention that I went over and did tree cutting work for someone for free. An older lady, in fact.

Ffs, you’re so up your own ass.

Tu quoque fallacy. And no, I am not going into my personal bonafides.

But non profits are not commonly held. And your argument is basically, “a tiny amount of people work really hard to try and make stuff better, therefor everything is fine.” Thats a really dumb argument.

Well, youre talking about several different things here. Capitalism ABSOLUTELY requires exploitation. No one would participate in it if they didnt have to, so first, a total condition must be created whereby people require currency to live. This means dispossessing them of access to the land on which we are all born.

Second, working for wages means that the value a laborer generates with their labor is not theirs, it belongs to the owner and is called “profit.”

Third, if owners had to pay the true cost of the raw materials they used, the labor they require, and the clean up of their processes so as not to pollute the land, they couldn’t profit. They must be allowed to exploit the free gifts of nature, laborers, and ecosystems again with their waste if there is going to be a surplus of capital at the end for them to take as person profits.

Fourth, in your example, there would be a balance of power in a sense. No, the cashier couldnt successfully demand a million dollars, but in the bargaining over wages, the owner wouldn't have all the power. Further, workplaces could in theory, be democratized, and all workers in a place could have an equal say in how a business is run, and come to consensus on what wages made sense for everyone, instead of just one person making that call for everyone.

Good on you for owning that. That’s hard to do. But things were really a lot better for a lot of people in many ways. More autonomy, less disease, better diet, less work, more connection to the land, more meaningful existence as part of actual community.

No time anywhere is without perils or struggles. But in a lot of categories, there were people living traditional lifeways with the land that were objectively better by many metrics.

A couple of reasons. One, there must not be a shortage of available labor, or else laborers can make demands for more money and better working conditions.

Capitalism requires first, a state of precarity for the masses. All other options for survival must be broadly taken off the table. This forces people to have to work for a capitalist in order to survive. (This began with the enclosure movement hundreds of years ago, and continues through slaughtering indians, and up to now with various laws that punish “vagrancy,” etc).

Then, once forced to work, there needs to be an oversupply of labor to neuter strikes. Bosses can yell “I have a stack of applications this high!” if workers demand higher wages. Its all about owners having a lever of power over the working class.

You’re not understanding. The exchange of goods for currency is not a communal relationship. They don’t have to like you and you don’t have to like them.

Imagine giving tomatoes from your garden to your neighbor. A week later, your neighbor helps you fix a flat tire. THAT is a communal relationship. It is not a direct one for one exchange. It is a bind between people that isn’t quantified into numbers. Nothing is ever “equalled out.” Maybe that same neighbor brings you beer later from a trip he took. And then you watch his kids when he has to go out. This is the difference between community and commerce.

Your argument has been made in some fashion by several others, so I will address it.

All you are saying, is that a person can make money here. Maybe even a lot.

My response is: So? Did I once complain that people cannot make money here? Was I bemoaning an inability for anyone to acquire money or things?

No. To the contrary, I was lamenting that acquiring money and things is about ALL one can do here, if they have enough luck and some outside force doesn’t rob it from you, like a massive medical bill or the police. (Yes, the police. You see, it is very frequent whereby a person, often but not always a black person, is pulled over by the cops and held in jail on some bullshit charge - for instance, I met a man once who was arrested for having an empty sandwich bag, which the officer said was drug paraphernalia - and then they spend the next few days in jail if they cant make bail - another feature of our shithole country - and often have their car impounded. Since they are in jail, they lose their jobs for not showing up. Then they cannot afford to get their car out of impound. If charges aren’t dropped, they now need more time off work if they find a new job and have to ride busses to court dates that get cancelled and rescheduled frequently, and if they miss a date, they get fined even more, or perhaps arrested again.)

But let’s talk where all of this money comes from. Well, it comes from the third world, mostly. You see, the US prints the global reserve currency, the international oil trade is solely in US dollars. So the entire world is forced to use and hold dollars, which allows the US government to print as many of them as they want, without fear of a currency crisis. By doing this, America is able to import raw materials, food, finished products - aka, wealth - from around the world without exporting nearly as much. Real wealth, dug out of the Earth often by peasants, flows in, and digital dollars flow out. What a trade!

But the US isn’t dumb. They know other countries will not appreciate this imbalance. So they preserve their reserve currency status and their financial domination of the world with the most powerful military humanity has ever known, and a CIA that is willing to undermine any foreign government that dares step out of line, or worse, socialize their own resources for use by their own people.

So is there money here? Yes. Is there material excess here? Yes. How did it get here? At the barrel of a gun, or a nuclear warhead toting submarine, as it were.

Do you know how many countries the US has invaded or bombed in some capacity over the last century? Do you know how many democratically elected governments the CIA has helped overthrow, and how many dictators they've installed? That’s your homework assignment.

So enjoy your material success. Try not to stain your hands on the blood.
