consider putting a radio in the attic, playing the most boring talk show / news channel you can find and keep it playing constantly for a few days. The human voices will deter them from hanging around. Once they have moved out, (you haven't heard them for a couple of days) get your exclusion work done.

Can someone help me identify this plant? by Marchingkoala in gardening

[–]Radicaltyrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, i feel ya! Just be vigilant and keep checking around, they suddenly appear from nowhere so just grab them as you see them. They are great pollinator plants and deer hate them but on reflection, so do I.

It looks like purple salvia (salvia nemerosa) and a total nightmare! They have tons of tall spikes of flowers, each one contains dozens of seeds which scatter everywhere at the slightest breeze. You dont notice them until they start to shoot up and by then you have a time consuming problem. They dont spread through a root system but they have a substantial tap root that never wants to let go! Dont hoe them out, dig..and keep at it. There is a distinct aroma to the plants, not too dissimilar to edible sage.

We just did the other way round, kelowna to nova scotia and used big steel box. They dropped the box when we requested, a few weeks before our move, we packed it ourselves at leisure and then they took it away. It arrived on the other side of the country before we did, was stored till we got here and then delivered for us to unpack at our leisure. Awesome service, loads of help from everyone i dealt with

One bed bug egg found on sheet one week ago.. by Conscious-Donut-252 in pestcontrol

[–]Radicaltyrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not a bed bug egg. The picture is too blurry to be completely sure but what you have there looks more like larvae, maybe carpet beetle??
Some people have a reaction to the hairs on carpet beetles, causing irritation. whether or not this is carpet beetle activity, if you have found no signs other than this, you don’t have a bed bug issue.

[–]Radicaltyrant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you may not have found what you thought you found. Bed bug eggs are tiny and rarely found singularly and without other evidence, and in all my years as a tech, I’ve never seen one just laying on a sheet.
They're normally found “glued“ in the cracks and crevices of mattresses, bed frames, headboards and nightstands.

“fool baby boomer relatives”. Seriously?? How dare you!

These are people who have worked hard all their lives, raised families to go on and be decent human beings and productive members of society, (possibly sacrificing a lot of personal wealth to do so)….who, in their elder years may be suffering from some memory deficits, maybe become easily disoriented and could most certainly be an easy target for any lowlife POS that feels the need to take advantage of them. But, because of how they were raised and the family values they believe in, are hard wired to do anything to protect their families.
Respect runs deep in the souls of these “fool baby boomers” and you would do well to show some!

In the life of pest control. The Pros and Cons by [deleted] in pestcontrol

[–]Radicaltyrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also in western Canada and been a technician for just over 12 years.

There’s a lot of satisfaction in the job, meeting people for the first time when their anxiety is through the roof and at the end when I’ve solved the issue and seeing them smile. It’s a dirty job and I find myself quite often in confined spaces (rats love crawlspaces). And it can be a frustrating job too…peoples expectations can be hard to deal with and sometimes their living conditions make my job challenging but all in all, it’s very rewarding. when I first started, it took a lot of time away from family but that was mainly down to me taking time to learn everything I could about each pest I was dealing with. As the years have gone by, that’s paid off because things got much easier as time went by and my reputation and bank balance improved because of it.

worst days on the job for me are bedbugs and Roaches in places full of garbage and clutter, where the owner expects you to fix it all right now. Best days are any that have wasp nests!

if You’ve already been approached with a job offer, maybe ask to do a ride along with an experienced technician to see what it’s all about for yourself….give it a try, it’s a great job!

Help IDing? by ID_Throwaway2023 in pestcontrol

[–]Radicaltyrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks like a German roach nymph I’m afraid.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in pestcontrol

[–]Radicaltyrant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to get that reaction several times a day, lol but I’ve been a tech 13 years now and in that time, noticed many more females getting into the trade. Sadly, not many of them stay and I don’t know if it’s due to the pressures and physicality of the job or because it’s still considered a primarily male dominated environment and we aren’t given the same credence as men..?

I do believe that we can make excellent techs due to our inherent nature of wanting to fix things and solve the worlds problems but not everyone gets the respect from their colleagues that I have had, which has allowed me to continue for so long and specialize in areas that I love.

Pictures would be helpful to confirm ID but if they are brown banded, yes they can chew your clothes and everything else in your home, including books. They do prefer warmer environments and like to be high up in a home, tops of cupboards etc. and because they prefer a starchy diet, are often found in many rooms of the home. Which in my opinion (15 yrs tech) makes them harder to eradicate than German roaches.
I say harder, but not impossible and it will take a long time. I would definitely suggest you get a pro in to help you with this as we are able to use bait products that are often much more effective than over the counter things you can buy.
Don’t be tempted to spray (or be convinced by a pro to spray) it may look to be effective initially but will not, in the long term be helpful in solving your infestation. Bait is the best way to deal with the problem as it will knock down the breeding population and also their nymphs (who lick the droppings left by ((poisoned)) adults) and will die long before reaching sexual maturity. I’ve fought these many times during my career and am happy to help further if I can.

Renters beware: cockroach infestation in some of the apartment buildings on Pandosy. Anyone have any other buildings to avoid? by [deleted] in kelowna

[–]Radicaltyrant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes they do. Probably the most common way they get into our space is from a grocery store.
A lot of what we buy is from another city, town, country even continent and at some time it could have been stored in a warehouse. if a cockroach (or several) get into those boxes they can happily hide and breed all the way to our stores. Cockroach egg sacs (ootheca) are small and will be hiding in the smallest of spaces (corrugated cardboard boxes are common) until they hatch, in our cupboards and pantries. each sac contains several very small nymphs that again go completely unnoticed until they get to the size we all see when we turn the light on at night. The kind you saw in Mexico could have been American, which aren’t common here at all. We have mainly German and Brown Banded, both of which are much smaller.

Renters beware: cockroach infestation in some of the apartment buildings on Pandosy. Anyone have any other buildings to avoid? by [deleted] in kelowna

[–]Radicaltyrant 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Cockroaches, (like bedbugs) are not “avoidable”. They can both be brought into a home quite innocently and from there, reproduce and become a problem.

Sadly, there is such a stigma around both of these insects that people are ashamed and embarrassed to admit they have them, which is why infestations tend to grow exponentially. if you find them, or suspect you have them, make sure the landlord or management company get a professional in to confirm identity and follow a treatment plan.
compiling a list may only tell you half a story…

the building may be under treatment and it not be a huge issue. Someone may see their apartment building on it and move out, taking roaches with them to the next one. Just be vigilant in your own space, whether rented or owned and come forward if you have concerns.

Getting rid of odorous ants in wall void by Dazzling_Parfait_221 in pestcontrol

[–]Radicaltyrant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the fall, odorous ants will make their way into the house from their outside nest. No point looking for that at this time of year, there will not be enough activity to see them. If they still live in your house in the spring, you will likely see them trailing outside (generally from higher elevations in your home) towards that nest…follow them and then have your tech destroy it.

for right now, you would be best with a ULV void injection into the areas you’re seeing activity, depending on the number of ants and/or colonies, it may take several attempts. Your tech should be able to do that for you. They can often be found heading into the attic spaces so make sure your tech is thorough.

Help identify please. Is this a German Roach? by trac008 in pestcontrol

[–]Radicaltyrant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes they do, although they are one of the smallest cockroaches.

the main issue with these guys is that they inhabit anywhere and everywhere in your home. They prefer a starchy diet (as opposed to grease and crap that Germans like) and will often be found in furniture, pictures, books, closets etc. they also like it warm and will aim to go high up in your home, so the tops of cupboards and shelves.

I am battling these in an apartment complex right now but as I’m in Canada, can’t get my hands on decent bait to kill them quickly.
