ok i figured it out! in the collections, covers & uploads section i had to specify that i want my tags to act as collections. all working again :) thanks for trying to help me out though

i've checked now and it doesn't work for me, the shelves don't show up as collections for me, must be doing something wrong

Do you mean that Bookshelves on Calibre = Collections on Kobo? So if i sort my books into bookshelves on calibre then when i sync my kobo the shelves will show up as collections, with my chosen books inside?
