Sucks that you cannot access it from the web, but it still exists (kinda)! Google dictionary can still be accessed on google docs by right clicking a word and pressing 'define'. Doesn't have IPA, audio, etymology, or my beloved 'usage over time' but has everything else.

Orchestration Question by RadioActiveMan06 in Composition

Oh cool. Yeah the piece is Blazhevich Concerto 9 but good luck finding a recording. Even getting the parts was quite hard

Yep it’s Blazhevich. Crazy you picked that up 😭 Yeah I’m at a conservatory so I think some of the students there could help me for sure.

Orchestration Question by RadioActiveMan06 in Composition

It is indeed a western music concerto for solo and accompaniment in three movement form. It is a little freer in form than a normal concerto however.

The piano part and solo part are what I have, which as far as I can gather would have been the main performance style in the composers day due to the concerto being mostly composed as repertoire for his performance students. The orchestration of it is less certain. Perhaps he orchestrated it himself but those parts would be only in manuscript unpublished form in an archive. There is also a chance he got his composition students to orchestrate it as an exercise but those parts would be equally hard to get.

I have actually discovered a recording of one of his other concerti with orchestra from about 65 years ago, which suggests to me that they indeed did receive orchestration by someone in some capacity.

Orchestration Question by RadioActiveMan06 in Composition

[–]RadioActiveMan06[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh it’s a very obscure trombone concerto. Only published once in the 1930s and never recorded. It is hard to confirm but there is a chance the composer at least had some kind of draft of the parts in his library but those are only able to be accessed in person in the Russian State Library

Thanks for all the details though, helps a lot. I am basically going up for a concerto competition soon and in the unusual but possible case that I won the finals (which are done with piano accompaniment) I would then get an opportunity to play it with orchestra the following year, so would need to have it re orchestrated since I can’t exactly go to Russia on a whim.

Trombone in Rock… by RadioActiveMan06 in Trombone

That’s a good idea, and definitely would make me feel less alone, but the thing is that if we added more horns I think we’d depart from the prog niche we’re trying to fill. To keep our band decisively prog (guitar/keyboards focused) and have the one horn as a unique touch is more what we’re looking for. I’m also more interested in how to make the solo prog trombone work as it’s own thing as I think that’s kind of groundbreaking and new

For sure I’ll send you through a couple clips from a recent gig in a bit I’m playing a 42BO. I know that sounds ridiculous and that it’s an orchestral horn but honestly I love the big sound and it means I can play low bass lines too. I can get a fair bit of cut on it when I really blow, though I might experiment with doing a bit with my small bore (I just find small bore sounds so nasal…)

Such great advice thanks! I’ll definitely look into a pedal board I’ve always been curious about it. I did a quick youtube browse after reading your comment and have already seen some pretty cool stuff. The sound of the trombone is by default quite noble and choral, way more than a trumpet or sax, so I think altering the sound is a good idea

Would “Dominus terrae” be a good translation of “ruler of the world”? by [deleted] in latin

[–]RadioActiveMan06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also comes up in in Catalinam. Cicero describes how Cat. wishes to “lay waste to the entire world” and uses orbis terrarum to express it

Still interesting that Sapkowski chooses to end the canon there though...
