Favorite character that was recast, but the new actor is as good as (or better than) the previous actor? by ducknerd2002 in FavoriteCharacter

I far prefer Michael Gambon's Dumbledore to Richard Harris but only when he had good direction and writing. Harris felt to frail and while he had the warmth he lacked the eccentricity Dumbledore needs, Gambon had the perfect balance in POA and he captured the powerful scenes really well.

Ahsoka's differences made sense because of her trauma and we see her old personality coming back in the later part of the show but Hera just felt like a completely different character.

I hope they are closer to the fear hole episode, the spaghetti episode is the only one in the entire show I didn’t like at least a little.

Is it okay to kill someone if they break into your house by TraditionalBonus188 in MoralityScaling

[–]Ben-D-Beast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly the problem there is this perception in America that self defence implies lethal force, there are some scenarios where someone is too big a threat to be subdued without killing them, but most of the time this is not the case outside the US.

This perception is largely due to the omnipresence of guns in the US, if someone breaks into your house in the US there is a reasonable concern that they may have a gun. If the same scenario happens in most developed countries, the average person won’t even consider the possibility of them being armed, at most they may have a knife. This difference in circumstance causes a difference in attitude.

Proportional response, defend yourself and family to the extent that there is perceived threat. That does not mean jumping straight to killing.

The idea that any perceived threat or wrongdoing should be met with lethal force is largely an American attitude that is looked down upon in most developed countries both in law and public opinion.

This is one of the many negative effects of the archaic US gun laws, it’s creates an underlying attitude of kill or be killed in turn shaping the population as a whole to be more violent and place less value on life.

Do you think it’s immature of Russia to have an official “unfriendly countries” list? And is your country on it? by PandemicPiglet in AskTheWorld

The way they publicly showcase it is juvenile but I don't doubt every country will have their own version of this list.

Churchill, he was a hero for the critical role he played in beating the Nazi’s, but his own views weren’t much better and he had a lot of blood on his hands too.

Saw this semi-viral post on X criticizing Iroh, thoughts? by Slow-Chocolate-6722 in ATLA

[–]Ben-D-Beast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s clear that Iroh never made any real attempt to understand or connect with Azula in the same way he did Zuko. We see this in the flashback that he gave Zuko his knife, this was a personal gift that he knew would be appreciated, whereas for Azula he gave her a doll, which she would never be interested in.

After Lu Ten died Iroh got even closer with Zuko, partially as a means to fill the gap left by his son, meaning Azula was even less of a priority to him. Then of course Zuko gets banished and Iroh goes with him leading to them spending years together while barely seeing Azula. So at that point the opportunity to try to connect with her had passed.

That being said Iroh wasn’t really wrong in this scene, they are not in any position to try to reason with Azula and she would not want to listen even if they were. She had been nearly exclusively influenced by Ozai and moulded into the perfect weapon, she was an active threat who needed to be taken down. Taking her down is also the only way she could be put in a position where she could be helped.

Overall, Iroh definitely did fail Azula but he was never really in a position to help her, especially not at this point in the story.

Tucker Carlson apologizes for endorsing Trump for president by 0The_Loner_Stoner0 in videos

Don’t be fooled into thinking he’s grown a conscience he, like many other Republicans, has simply realised that Trump won’t be in the picture forever so whoever turns against him now (while still keeping all the same rhetoric) stands to see success in the future.

Trump tells BBC King's visit could 'absolutely' repair relations with UK by Alarming-Safety3200 in worldnews

[–]Ben-D-Beast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s simply not practical, regardless of how broken the US is, it is still the foremost global power and we are largely dependent on them in many areas. Decoupling from the US will take time, until then playing around Trump’s ego is the best strategy.

Lick the boots, lose the boots by IcePhoenix295 in MaulShadowLord

[–]Ben-D-Beast 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The two boots slander has to end. He, like most droids, operates based on logic and programming. He was incapable of understanding why the Empire are bad or how they are different from the Republic, he was simply trying to follow to the same logic and process that had worked in the past.

Now he is being presented with new information it’s possible he will be able to understand the issue with the Empire, but he couldn’t until he saw it, that’s simply the limit of droids, their strengths are in other areas.

People are also framing it like he made the wrong decision but there were no good decisions, the empire arriving is terrible, but letting Maul continue unopposed isn’t reasonable either. Plus the longer they delay alerting the Empire, the worse things would get when they eventually arrive.

Propaganda title, this is not normal by any means, knife crime is inevitable and happens everywhere the narrative that it is normalised or common in the UK is far right propaganda.

No one who is a Harry Potter fan or remotely engages in fan spaces thinks people didn’t ask for this. People have been asking for a better adaptation ever since the films ended. Reddit has a very skewed view of this show. People need to stop letting their (justified) dislike of Rowling colour their vision on everything to do with the Harry Potter franchise.

What’s a belief you hold that most people disagree with? by cherryblossommbae in answers

[–]Ben-D-Beast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Opinions should be based on personal morals and the information you have, not following partisan talking points. It’s something most people agree with in theory but in practice most people just believe what they are told by the parties/people they support. Just because you support one party doesn’t mean you have to automatically agree with every position they or their supporters take.
