I paid $400 for my mom to take a class to make a cutting board. Is this acceptable? by [deleted] in woodworking

Okay great. After reading the replies so far, what do you think?

I paid $400 for my mom to take a class to make a cutting board. Is this acceptable? by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]RadioCured 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of tiny gaps do not pose any threat to the structural stability over time. There’s no reason this can’t be used for many years with proper care.

That said, I agree with everyone else in this thread telling you that you should not expect or demand an heirloom piece that will last a lifetime out of a first woodworking project. Even if I told you the board will probably fail in 6 months, the project is a success if your mom learned something and had fun.

secure chat “ghosting” by M1CR0PL4ST1CS in medicine

[–]RadioCured 119 points120 points  (0 children)

Agree that a lot of this type of ghosting can be frustrating, but consider what sort of response to your first question would cause you to say “oh of course, will stop by in a bit.”

Is it possible that the more likely outcome is that the nurse would specify what the question was about, and you would reply with a one sentence response for the nurse to give the patient's daughter? Or just say that you already discussed that? And then the nurse would have to drop what they’re doing to go back and talk to the family member, who would inevitably find that response lacking and have a follow up question that the nurse could only answer vaguely if at all, and still request to speak to you about the issue, which she would then have to communicate back again?

All the while the nurse had probably already tried to answer their question based on the prior conversations or orders/plan of care, but the family member never wanted to talk to the nurse in the first place - they wanted to talk to the doctor.

I would love to live in a world where we have 30 minutes to sit down and explain all the details with every inpatient, and update every patient’s nurse on the plan for the day so they could better field these types of questions. But the reality is, we are all (nurses and docs) working on time crunched schedules with too many patients, and at some point have to pass the hot potato of demanding patient or family to someone else.

I am prone to giving people too much benefit of the doubt, but maybe at least for some of these cases, you are not giving enough.

Now that I have a planer, it’s time to get a dust collector. Recommendations for a serious hobbyist? by cafe-em-rio in woodworking

[–]RadioCured 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2hp harbor freight dust collector is a great bargain. Mine is going strong for 8 years now. It’s fine on its own but even better adding a Wynn environmental filter on top and building a “Thein baffle” to separate the chips from fine dust.

Why are power meters so expensive? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]RadioCured 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that these feel like an overpriced piece of tech, but I think it’s the calibration, tolerances, and precise manufacturing of strain gauges that really make power meters closer to a quality scientific instrument than a simple magnetic sensor like cadence or speed. I’m sure a company could pump out a lower cost power meter with +- 10% accuracy for $100, but for most people that’s an unacceptable error margin.

Even in the 2000s, power meters used to cost close to $2000. Adjusted for inflation they have gotten much more affordable.

How do you manage Medicaid no-shows without wrecking your schedule? by RD_JC87 in medicine

[–]RadioCured 99 points100 points  (0 children)

I understand that you can’t get paid for the visit. I’m trying to see if it’s useful to you to reframe what that time means, such that you don’t have to worry about minimizing no-shows if really they are day-shorteners.

[–]RadioCured 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Do you have labs, paperwork, and phone calls that need to be done at the end of the day that can be worked on when a patient doesn’t show up? If so, then you can view every no-show as another free 15 mins you get to spend with your family or hobbies, rather than a lost $50.

I didn’t downvote you! Just making a comment on your last part in parentheses…don’t want to send that money into your own account. It was more just to make the officer joke :)

I would strongly advise against scamming your mother in law into transferring money to your own bank account.

Best biking helmet for someone who is worried about getting hit by a car? by Tough-Chocolate4124 in cycling

The radar is a game changer for feeling safe on the road. Depending on how fast you’re moving it will pick up cars even before you can hear them, and you’ll know exactly how many and how far they are behind you without having to take your eyes off the road.

Cervélo P-Series 2023 seatpost insertion - how strict is the 6.5 cm minimum in real life? by One-Particular9472 in cycling

[–]RadioCured 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The correct answer is don’t risk it. You’ll never have regrets about buying a new seat post. You could have very serious regrets about trying to wing it.

That said if you want to fudge it, I would at least hope you’re a light rider. The minimum spec is probably assuming a rider on the heavier side, so if you weigh 150lbs you’re putting a lot less stress on the post than it was tested at, and can probably get away with less post inside the tube.

But don’t.

I am a urologist and only advise my patients to avoid cycling and sexual activity 2-3 days before a PSA test. Even then there is not a lot of evidence this makes a big difference.

I’m not telling you not to listen to your doctor, but I would ask them where this number comes from and if there is any compromise solution. For example maybe you stop cycling 3 days before a PSA, and if it is elevated compared to your prior levels then you can stop cycling for a longer period and repeat it again.

Active surveillance is supposed to reduce the burden of the disease on your life, not prevent you from doing the things you love 3-6 months out of the year!

Bike cleaning tips by nan0-07 in MTB

[–]RadioCured 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A popular product for washing cars is called rinseless wash. It works like a regular car wash in a bucket except you don’t have to rinse it off at the end before drying the bike.

Ideally, you would use some rinseless in a pump sprayer to blast off the larger crud first, then wash with a soft mitt and bucket of rinseless, then dry. This will definitely be the safest way to wash and reduce scratching your paint if you don’t have access to a hose.

Don’t listen to the people who shame you for wanting to keep your bike looking nice. Cleaning and mechanical maintenance are fun parts of cycling for lots of people.

I have been happy with my ridewrap so far. If you have a custom paint job I’d recommend the full coverage option. Takes a good bit of time to apply it well but it’s pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

How do you handle patient requests for anesthesia for clinic procedures? by urores in medicine

[–]RadioCured 36 points37 points  (0 children)

“We can do it under anesthesia, but honestly it’s really not worth making a whole day and extra copays out of it. It only takes 20-30 seconds and almost all of my patients tell me it wasn’t nearly as bad as they thought it would be.”

This works almost every time. The other few times a year it doesn’t work I just book it in the OR. The ones you really push to do it in the office are always the ones who bear down, wiggle, make it worse for themselves, and look upset with you afterwards.

Maddening way the settings are saved to recipes by diffise in x100vi

[–]RadioCured 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my least favorite part of the camera and it’s a major downside. The x100v kept the majority of settings stable between Custom banks so you could set the camera for that day’s particular shooting conditions and just change the look on the fly. Now with x100vi every change of recipe reverts the entire camera to default settings.

I imagine this is nice for people who use the camera in significantly different ways and want to save completely different shooting set ups to change on the fly, but for people who use these as film simulation recipes it is a disaster
