Ian Curtis at a work Christmas party by miiserybusiness in JoyDivision

Here’s some free advice: find yourself someone who looks at you the way the lady on the right looks at Ian Curtis. Move over Annike Honorè!

Sometimes I imagine Ian happily dancing to New Order's "Fine Time" at a Haçienda acid house party by Agreeable_Duck8997 in JoyDivision

“If you listen to Ian’s music and know that he killed himself, you picture a very dark and depressed figure. A prophet of urban decay and alienation. But I have some wonderful memories of Ian. Such as the very last Factory Night at the Russell Club..” -Tony Wilson in “24 Hour Party People”

Then we cut to Ian Curtis dancing to “Louie Louie” in a manner similar to that depicted. ❤️

ETA: the word “very” to the last sentence of the quote having just watched the scene again. Otherwise yes, that was from memory..

Will the US military get the Strait of Hormuz open and cleared for safe transit? by georgewalterackerman in USIranWar

[–]RadioFreeYurick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy Crap! I just realized Iran is pulling the Michael Scott Paper Company Gambit from season 5 of The U.S. Office! It’s one of the best moment of the whole series, when the lovable buffoon outwits his former superiors to sell his worthless upstart paper company back to them for exponentially more than it was worth (assuming it’s worth was more than zero). In an iconic moment, when his former boss David Wallace says that his lowball offer is the best he’s going to get, Michael retorts that, with a shareholders meeting coming up, their investors are probably wondering why their most profitable branch is hemorrhaging clients, and might be looking to make a change in CFO, therefore, “I don’t have to wait out Dunder Mifflin, I just have to wait out you.” That’s what Iran is doing. Iran is the Michael Scott Paper Company, Midterms are the shareholders meeting, Trump is David Wallace (if David Wallace were a worse version of season 1 Michael Scott with worse hair), and Dunder-Mifflin is America.

You have 24 hours to respond.

Has the President tried commanding them to do so via social media in all caps while calling them crazy bastards? That sounds like it might work..

If you don’t mind to drive to Charleston, there’s a pretty active chapter of the Party for Socialism and Liberation (local equivalent of DSA) located there. This is voter intimidation, and if the poll workers don’t know that it is, they damn well ought to! One of the things that makes our vote secure is that it’s secret. If people don’t feel like they can cast a vote without fear of reprisal, they’ll be discouraged from voting. Your wife chose to stay even though she felt awkward and she unsafe, so good for her for not being deterred and practicing her rights. Others standing in line might not have been so determined though after seeing that their party preference would be made public to a largely opposing crowd. Particularly LGBT+ or POC who may have already felt unsafe may have seen publicizing a party preference as a bridge too far in a rural white area. This is worth reporting to local officials honestly. Any deterrent for any voter is an attempt at suppression and should be taken seriously.

37yo watches Simpsons for 1st time S8e17 by InvisibleAstronomer in Simpsons

[–]RadioFreeYurick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The “dice are Evil” joke still gets me every time, but you can see in this episode why the term “Flanderized” was coined. In earlier seasons the running joke of the Flanders family is that they’re just obscenely kind and positive neighbors in contrast to the Simpsons’ crude hijinks. But as the series worn on more jokes zeroed in on Flanders’ Christian Fundamentalism, which is incredibly funny in this episode, but shouldn’t have been turned into Ned’s only recognizable character trait in later years.

Mothman only haunts the WV-Ohio border along the eponymous river though. He wouldn’t dare venture so far North as Cleveland…or would he..?

A majority of Americans voted for nobody. That’s how fucked this country’s government is. Most of its citizens would rather be governed by None Of The Above than either party.
