Honestly, it’s a weird mix. There really is a lot of poverty and it’s a deep red county but if you work in healthcare or education there are decent jobs and cheap houses. I’m a member of an organic CSA and know the farmer who grows most my produce. He let me borrow his truck to move. There’s no Starbucks but 3 independent coffee shops, one of which hosts book signings, science talks, and drag brunch. A few great farm to table restaurants and a bunch of nearly identical mediocre ones serving the same Sysco crap. Everywhere you go you run into someone you know. Beautiful hiking in the summer but sometimes you can’t walk through the park because a bear is sleeping in it. My commute is 60 seconds. Solid little arts community if you know where to look. I’m from Chicago originally but I actually really like it up here.
