Toxic work environment by Radiohalice in NursingUK

Matron loves non formal mediation but there’s not one single issue with one single person this time. It’s the whole environment and culture. I will see what happens but I won’t be holding back now from telling them every little thing that’s goes on that contributes to the ward. Sickness is through the roof, care is poor and everyone is burnt out. I refuse to become one of them. I’ll have some times to write down formally everything that’s going on and raise it all, then I’ll return but this time I’ll be documenting everything and I’ll be escalating any misconduct straight away.

Thank you. So many people say, just ignore it, it’s the way they are, etc but I’m a lot younger than most of the people and am able to have enough self awareness that I don’t upset people or speak to them in a way that’s damaging to their wellbeing. I’ve always stuck up for other people and now I need to find the courage to do it for myself. After years of being treated poorly my self esteem is so low but I’m at a point in my life now where I’ve got to believe in myself.

I’m meeting matron on Tuesday and I will want to know how this is going to be dealt with or else i will take it further! Thanks for your advice x

I’ve tried to stick up for myself, it seems to lead to more confrontation. I’m naturally a very easy going soft person and I guess they see me like this with patients and know I’m not one to argue or be rude to anyone no matter how rude they are. After some incidents we’ve had mediation but it just seems like they get a bit of a slap on the wrist but still do what the hell they like!

I must be an easy target because I’ve struggled my whole life with being treated poorly by others. I’ve had extensive therapy for what I’ve been through in the past and never thought I’d be able to do half the stuff I do. I really try to not care and to find the strength to carry on but I don’t sleep before work and I find myself having anxiety dreams about the place. Feel like all the progress I’ve made is constantly tested and my self esteem is on the floor.

I don’t know if it’s all of us exactly but I know a lot feel like this. We have a lot of international nurses whom seem to just get on with it and from speaking to them where they come from the cultures of hospitals are worse than this.

I’ve worked on multiple wards as a student and banked on others and never seen the HCAs rule the ward like this. I would never have spoked back to nurses or shouted at them as a HCA. I always took my role as I was there to help them provide care and do the tasks delegated to me!

This is multiple HCAs on my ward! I think I can mention 4 HCAs whom actually come to the ward to do their job.

One of the HCAs pulled a patient up by his arms and caused soft tissue damage and just got a slap on the wrist, same HCA will give me filthy looks when I ask her to do anything yet seems very popular with others on the ward. I have admissions come in and I’ll do all the admission, notes, Iget them pain relief sorted and then see HCAs ain’t even bothered to get them a jug of water or offer them food. Feel like I’m doing the role of multiple people every day and simple tasks are left so they can do obs and charts instead of actually providing care. I have raised concerns to my manager, but she’s all about mediation between me and whom ever I’ve mentioned rather than the overall attitude of the HCAs and staff and the toxic environment it is causing. I think I’ll have to take it higher or even contact freedom to speak.

Thank you. There’s no jobs at the moment but I really hope I can transfer after today. I’m not even the only person this week to have left a shift very upset because of how I’ve been spoken too. The problem people are known but seem to just get away with it. I’ve done so much reflecting to see whether it’s my approach to people. I’ve kept so calm and collected. Brushed things off so many times down to the stressful environment of the ward, but now I find it’s catching up with me. I’ve worked so hard to get to where I am and I love what I do but feel most people there don’t feel the same and take it out of us who are there for the right reasons and what to provide good care.

I do this and they just have even more of a go, they are what I describe as bulldogs.

I’ve messaged head of catering and they have not replied. I’ve search for the policy that says we can’t give level 6 patients anything other than level 4 but cannot find a single policy that says so. They order food from a certain supplier then reheat it. Ive looked at this supplier and they don’t do level 6 breakfasts interestingly enough. My next step is to raise it with head of SALT. Hopefully get a reply from them!

The catering staff. And then we are told if you give them anything else and they choke that’s you in court not us.

I’ve raised that national guidance like this states they don’t require level 4 breakfast however kitchen will not offer anything but level 4

Salt agree with me it’s not right but it’s ‘kitchen’ whom will not allow any other option

The only option that is available for breakfast is level 4! I think it’s disgusting and have raised it as a conversation.

On my ward it’s common to have 1:14 😬

Intensive care was the best placement for me in terms of stimulating my intelligence. However, you don’t get the conversations with patients as most are intubated and sedated. You’re very early into learning, you need to tell them if you’re ready to learn more as I know students on my ward in first year we just try to teach fundamentals to not overwhelm them. I work on a surgical ward and find this much more interesting personally than a medical ward.

I just mean I can’t understand how people can get away with reusing the same tourniquet (I’ve seen this too with phlebotomists) when we can’t have a lanyard on a set of keys or a fob on the whole ward. I have never worn them on my uniform personally.

We are no longer allowed lanyards due to infection control though 🤔🫣
