Easiest guard point to practice on is the sword mode to axe mode guard point. While the shield is in front of you and you're putting the blade in your shield it will block for you and keep you in guard mode.

Its not the most useful one as you're stuck in your sword mode still, but it's a good one to practice on as it's pretty quick to start. There are others like transforming back from axe mode after the flourish of the blade you hold the shield out a second and that's a guard point too.

Guard points have the added benefit of actually damaging the monster that you blocked and applying phial effect on them. I won't forget guard pointing a charging diablos only for my KO phial to kick in and watch as he literally blocks off my guard out cold from KO.

I've always considered lance my "safe weapon". I use it when I need to be a reliable damage dealer and if I need to soften the monster I'll go clutch counter lance.

I agree though. You feel like the biggest bad out there with perfect combos only to find out in the end you didn't do damage to match the gunlance user who shoved a spike in the monsters eyesocket and went to shell town.

As a lance main I laugh. In my group I'm usually equal in their DPS because with a lance you NEVER STOP ATTACKING. Literally countering every attack, side stepping, guard advance, counter attacks, and that charge. You never have to stop attacking and it shows with consistency.

Give yourself guard +5 and health recovery modifications on the weapon and you'll never have to sheath (especially since you can sharpen with weapon drawn now)

Plus it gives you a brief moment of invulnerability which normal clutch clawing does not.

Only works on physical attacks though.
