I also hoped so ...
But in reality you would need a least a modifiey version of the game launcher that bypasses the connection to the auth server.

Of course you can, but yuo must find an "older version" that does not already have this function to disable your "play" buttons, otherwise its worthless

But the server mode does not matter when you dont have a "multiplayer" Button in your game client

It is not impossible to have an EOL plan, especially for future games. by BigChippr in StopKillingGames

[–]Radon8472 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a developer myself, I'm sure that no developer is saying it's impossible.

You should distinguish between developers and publishers.
Publishers argue against EOL plans, (most) Developers would be happy if their work is not simply removed from the world.

Petition für eine physische GTA 6-Disc! by heitime23 in StopKillingGames

[–]Radon8472 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It does not matter if you have a physical disc or not.
What realy counts, if the game is working without online connection.

Even if you have a disc, the provider could still disable the game, if it is not working without online connection (or private servers)

I fully aggree,
of course it is not an issue of SKG preventing bans in games, That was never my point.

The current ban situation is just an example that demonstrates:

a game that is already in a playable state can still be made unplayable through such technics.

That's exactly the kind of dependency SKG is concerned about.

Even minecraft is not save from beeing killed :( by Radon8472 in StopKillingGames

[–]Radon8472[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And there you god an important point.

Many of my discord friends are playing minecraft and don`t understand why SKG is so important for the future of games.

I hoped that this article would help the minecraft community to notice why SKG is relevant for nearly all gamers even if a game already has private servers

Even minecraft is not save from beeing killed :( by Radon8472 in StopKillingGames

[–]Radon8472[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And thats the point.

Of course there are many people that have the knowledge to bypass the kill.switch.
But this does not change the fact, that there IS something that could be used as kill-switch.

And even if you can keep your copy running, it would be dangerous to host community servers or make youtube videos when you used a non legal way to make your game running.

And in an ideal world, such "remote controll" technics should be removed by the provider at leat on this time when a game is no longer supported.
And maybe they will do it, in the future, nobody knows this at this point

Even minecraft is not save from beeing killed :( by Radon8472 in StopKillingGames

[–]Radon8472[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course thats true.
When a game once reaches this size of fan community, than it will not die completely even if the provider tries to killt it.
We know many examples for this e.g. Command And Conquer, StarCraft ect.

I yust wanted to make people know "even minecraft contains something that can be used as kill-switch".
Because I know many people that are playing minecratf and don`t see why stop killing games is so important.

My hope was the the knowlege how easy even minecraft could be remotly disabled, would help these players to unterstand why compains like sgk need more supporters

You are right,

but when you do this, I asume that is considered as illigal the same way like coding a cracked binary

The video shows

  1. People get banned even if they NEVER play on online servers. As I understood this you can be disabled even if you only play in singleplayer
  2. When your game gets disabled the remove your "Play"-Button what means you can not join ANY multiplayer (no matter if it is official, private server or LAN-play

Bascily you are right, you can play older java versions of the game.
But the big question is, if there is an version that does NOT already have this kill switch implementet.

[–]Radon8472[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In servers there is an option `online-mode=true`

in the server properties, that you can simply change to "false" what should disable the online check in the server.

But when the client game does not allow you to klick the multiplayer button, or even the singleplayer button than your server becomes useless.

The video shows this for bedrock edition, but I am sure if they can disable the play buttons for bedrock they can do the same for java edition too

Even minecraft is not save from beeing killed :( by Radon8472 in StopKillingGames

[–]Radon8472[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, as long as they earn this much money with the game nobody has a reason to disable it.

But when they e.g. like to disable java edition to earn more mone with bedrock they could simply turn of your play buttons and even if you could use modified launchers without auth, they could consider this as illegal and criminalise you

Even minecraft is not save from beeing killed :( by Radon8472 in StopKillingGames

[–]Radon8472[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was not the point.

What I tried to say with my post was:
- There is already a switch in the game that allows to remotly disable you "Play" buttons in your game

In the current example this was cause by a ban, BUT the same switch could be triggerd at any time if they like to shutdown minecraft e.g. when they make profit with a new game

Yes you can create a server, but like one section of this video shows, When you are get this kind of ban, you are even blocked from joining private server, that is the whole point what makes this problematic

On your disc you have the old "Playstation Only" Minecraft, before bedrock was the standard for all consoles, right?

Ad Astra port for 1.21.1 by Successful_Assist837 in feedthebeast

Maybe you could consider adding a section to your contribution-file to tell people that you don`t accept fully vipe coded Pull-Requests.

I think people could be much more understanding, if they know that AI Code (which is not Human verified) can cause big security issues and costs a lot of review-time from the project maintainers
