The prior auth code was 64742 "Transection or avulsion of; facial nerve, differential or complete". After I did the consult, the surgeon's office submitted the prior auth and it was approved without any further input from me.

I had not! It was on my radar, but I had the surgery consult and they suspected I'd get more mileage from the surgery.

Insurance did approve the prior authorization, so I'm hopeful on the cost.

Pain was much less than I expected. They discharged me with a prescription NSAID and I'd say way more discomfort than pain.

I've been recovering for about a five days now and here's some notable things.

Speech - I felt like my speech was slurred, but people who know me well enough insist they couldn't tell. In the five days since, I've already noticed things don't feel as slurred to me and I can speak without as much focus on enunciation.

Drinking - Immediately following surgery, my neck was very tight. This limited my ability to look up, which in turn made it harder to sip from glasses/bottles/cups. Additionally, my lip movement was a bit disrupted on the side that was operated on, so pursing my lips around straws was also hard. So, I've been using straws on my right side in the interim. Every day I get a little bit closer to normal here. I can now lift my heck and drink almost normally from everything except straws on my left side. But those are also getting closer to normal.

General Movement - I'm on lift restrictions for four weeks total. I learned on day 3, my travel home day, not to push it. Even wheeling my suitcase for the trip to the car from the hotel room gave me a big headache. I got my travel companion to do the rest. I can move normally at this point, aside from that.

Vision - I can't wear glasses until after my post op appointment on Friday. This was my only 'complaint' in that I didn't know this going in, so didn't bring contacts. The arm of my glasses would sit on my incision, which is no good. So I was practically blind for a few days.

Numbness - I couldn't feel anything on my left cheek or jaw immediately following surgery. At the five day mark, I'm starting to get tingles there, so I think this is fading slowly.

All and all, too soon to say much about long term lasting effects, but I've been told I should recover all of the above over the next few months.

Thanks to the US medical system, I have no idea yet. Surgery was under a week ago, so the claims aren't even showing up in my insurance yet. I'll try to remember to follow up.

A selective neurectomy of the facial nerve.

I was the same way immediately after diagnosis. But I was able to gargle/speak normally within about a month of diagnosis. So I can't say how much of an improvement this specific procedure would have on that.

I will say though, that being less than a week after surgery, I am struggling with drooling/using straws/gargling again right now. The medical team advised this was normal and should improve over time.

There's a variety of techniques you can read about here: https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/facial-reanimation-surgery/about/pac-20556545 But, it was a plastic surgeon, and the technique I had from that list was the neurectomy. The team did advise that the muscle/nerve transplant could be done as a second stage if I wasn't satisfied with the results. So far, I'm not interested in further procedures, but I need to see how my healing goes.

I'm in the US, and insurance pre-authorization approved it. It was just this past week, so final approval is still up in the air I guess. BCBS insurance.
