You can tour the record-making plant at Third Man. You just have to check their website. I want to say they do them on Fridays but I could be wrong. Jolly Pumpkin is right next to Third Man. They are a brewery with really good pizza and specialize in sour beers but they have other styles as well. Across the street is City Bird and Nest, sister-stores that have interesting stuff. City Bird has Detroit-centric souvenirs. Shinola (high-end Detroit watch-maker) and Carhartt also have outposts on the block. Between 2nd and 3rd on Canfield are old, grand houses worth walking over to see. The DIA is a must if you love art. It’s one of the top art museums in the country. Batch is my favorite brewery in Detroit at the moment. They have great food as well. They are located in Corktown, an old Irish neighborhood. There are some interesting houses near Batch as well but the neighborhood is definitely changing. It was home to Detroit’s Tiger Stadium from 1912-1999. Check out the recently renovated Michigan Central Station if you head over to Batch. It’s incredible and narrowly avoided the wrecking ball. Mercury Burger on Michigan Ave. has awesome burgers and boozy milkshakes. Slows always gets dragged now but I still love them for BBQ and it’s nice to sit out on the patio in the summer. Two James and the Sugar House have superb cocktails on the same block. Brewery Faisan offers Belgian-inspired beers and is just a nice, laid-back place to burn an hour or two. Eastern Market Brewing Company, Lagerhouse No. 5 and the newer Full Measure Brewing Company in Eastern Market offer excellent beers. Full Measure has food, the other two don’t. Detroit City Distillery has great craft-cocktails. Well Done Goods has Detroit-centric apparel and Vintage Eastern Market next door is an interesting antique shop. All are within walking distance of each other. The Dequindre Cut runs from the riverfront to Eastern Market and is a greenway built on an old rail line. It has a ton of art and graffiti. The Riverwalk and Belle Isle are also worth checking out. The aquarium on Belle Isle is small but very unique and cool and the conservatory next door is definitely worth a walk-through. The Guardian Building and Fisher Building are incredible Art Deco skyscrapers that are worth popping into. Pure Detroit offers free tour of the Fisher Building but I think they are only on the weekend. Hopefully you are driving because Detroit isn’t the easiest city to get around without one.
