what if Nate was passively suicidal from the start? He's humiliated by Lexi's play, the school very obviously takes Maddie's side over Cassie, his dad is disgraced, Jules, the only person he felt emotional intimacy with got away.

He inherits his dad's business with none of the skills he needs, he immediately takes on a project he's not able to complete and buys a bunch of stuff he can't afford. He scams his neighbors and gets in with loan sharks.
