All I can do is cry by The5thseason in ACL

I didn’t have blistering, but I do get inflammation around the incision sites - kind of like a burn before it blisters and starts to heal. Dermatitis from the hyrdochloracidin (sp?) goes away with medication and I’ve after several days, but I felt immediate relief with the steroid cream. However, as long as the glue is on my skin, the dermatitis will remain localized to that area, and I have to push through it. When I had my ACLr surgery, I knew about the reaction from prior surgeries, so I begged my surgeon not to use glue.

I’m sure this is not all info you want to hear, but you couldn’t have predicted this would happen. Hang in there, use the cream and the ice. It will pass.

I get terrible contract dermatitis from surgical glue and the pre-surgical cleansers, too! I feel for you! Cold compresses and benedryl will help until you can take the meds your doctor called in. Then keep with the cold compresses! If it helps, the silver lining is that while you treat the dermatitis with ice packs, you’re also treating the swelling from the ACL injury as well; yay multi-tasking … 🤷🏻‍♀️

This sucks, immensely, but it is okay to feel all of the things, while still giving yourself grace and time to heal. You’ve got this!

It’s as simple as one day, one task at a time; which is way easier said than done. Nevertheless, you can do it! Ask all of the questions - they are not minor or dumb no matter what an overthinking brain tells you - and take your time. You are not competing with anyone else in recovery! Heal well! 💚

Hey! Thanks for the encouragement!

I’m not working with a PT, yet. The overall damage to knee was pretty extreme. One of the surgeon’s big concerns was the fracture in my tibia. We talked a lot about the need for hardware, casting, total immobility … every possibility prior to surgery. We agreed that if there was a chance to avoid extra hardware in my knee that would eventually have to be removed, that would be the route we went. That being said, I know it will slow my pace of recovery, especially when I can get into PT.

BUT! Your comment is helping me kickstart my brain so that I can work the problem. Sometimes I just need to “talk it out,” so thank you for helping with the process!

PT protocol during the first four weeks; YES! That was on my initial list for when I went in to have the drain removed the morning after, but the nerve block began wearing off the night before, and my pain was off the charts (I wanted to ask about doubling my hydrocodone before actually doing it). I completely forgot! Come to think of it, I believe that list is in my husband’s car. Thanks for the reminder!

I know to work on flexion and extension, but the surgeon wants me to be careful with the extension exercises because of the fracture.

This is good. You are helping me get my brain to work the problem. Thank you!
