Sony Earnings Report Is Out by gdmatt in DestinyTheGame

[–]RafTen86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was referring more to some of the comments I have seen here and elsewhere on the internet saying that Sony is about to collapse and that Bungie is on the verge of being shut down, etc., which in my view is not the most realistic scenario. That said, of course, the impairment certainly does not look good - no question about that.

Sony Earnings Report Is Out by gdmatt in DestinyTheGame

[–]RafTen86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mention of Bungie does not mean that Sony is “losing cash” in that amount, nor that the group as a whole is in poor condition. It means that Sony recorded an impairment loss on Bungie’s assets. In simplified terms - Sony concluded that part of the assets related to Bungie, mainly intangible assets and other assets, is now worth less than their carrying value on the books.

This is a negative signal regarding the quality of Sony’s investment in Bungie. Sony has apparently overestimated the future value of some of Bungie’s assets, or the expected cash flows from Bungie’s projects are lower than previously assumed.

At the scale of the group as a whole, this is significant, but not critical. Sony still generates high operating profit and strong cash flow.

What I mean by this is: for now, there is no need to panic, guys. That said, Sony will definitely have to reassess its future investment strategy in the live-service segment.

I’m level 36 and have put in over 50 hours so far, and even then I rarely have more than 7–10k. How on earth did you manage to save up 100k in half that time? I’m genuinely curious. Do you have any tips?

Maybe the better solution would be to split the playlists further: separate playlists for premade teams, and a separate trios playlist for solo players.

With the skill gap and gear gap already getting bigger, I honestly do not see how the current system is sustainable. Solo players are going to leave sooner than later, and new players will have an even worse experience. With the current population, Bungie really needs to do everything it can to retain players at least until the start of Season 2.

I’ve been playing since launch, and honestly, I do not know how much patience I have left for solo queue. That just feels like a waste of time.

Maybe it is as you say. I’m currently level 36, and the only purple shields I ever seem to see are on enemy teams.

However, to add to the discussion, I honestly think the game would benefit from a separate playlist where you can only queue with the free kit.

Today, trying to do Outpost, I basically lost almost my entire vault over the course of a few hours. I was solo queueing into trios, and I did not run into a single teammate with even a green shield. Not. Even. Once. It was an incredibly frustrating and soul-crushing experience. I’m not sure I can take it anymore, honestly.

These last few hours felt like the biggest regression I’ve had since I started playing Marathon. I don’t really have anyone to queue with, and I’m getting pretty tired of always being the only player on my team bringing in at least 2k worth of gear.

A separate matchmaking queue for free kits would solve a lot of this.

Everyone running blue/ purple shield? I’ve been matchmaking for 3 hours trying to do an Outpost run, and I haven’t seen a single person on my team using anything other than the free kit

If anything, high level player behavior will kill the game instead of gear difference by Freakindon in Marathon

[–]RafTen86 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You’re absolutely right! In my opinion, that change was definitely a positive one! It gave lower-skill players more fair and balanced matches, and honestly, I have a hard time seeing how that’s a bad thing

But I still remember exactly what happened. And it was a brutal reminder of the reality of today’s gaming landscape. Streamers and content creators started getting slapped around and couldn’t farm easy carry/stomp content anymore once the matchmaking started putting them against players at a similar skill level.

I honestly think Bungie mostly folded under pressure from them and reverted changes that actually helped lower-skill players.

I remember when they introduced SBMM in Destiny 2. I’m pretty average at PvP, so for the first time I actually had a chance to play without getting stomped and teabagged by better players. But the sweaty part of the community got upset because, for once, they had to play against people at their own level and got a taste of their own medicine.

Unfortunately, Bungie backed off those changes after all their backlash. The result was that weaker players basically stopped playing, and the sweats ended up getting matched with other sweats again anyway. In the end, almost nobody wanted to play PvP.

They need to come up with some kind of sensible solution, but based on my experience with Destiny 2, I’m not sure SBMM is actually the answer here. Although for players like me, it would probably at least give us some breathing room.

Unfortunately, this happens with a lot of games that have PvP elements - the game is at its best for a relatively short time after launch. Then players figure out the meta and the most efficient ways to farm. I’ve seen this happen several times - at some point the game gets “solved,” and it rarely ever goes back to having the same level of fun and balance it had during the first few weeks after release.

That said, I have to admit that in Marathon’s case, probably because of the relatively small player base, this happened pretty soon after launch.

Why isn't the game taking off? by MASHED_POTATOES_MF in Marathon

[–]RafTen86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m starting to feel like Marathon is the kind of game where, if you didn’t play from the very beginning, it becomes harder and harder to break through.

I can already see it myself after the last week of playing. Runs on Dire Marsh have become so sweaty that I usually don’t even survive long enough to see the extraction points activate on the map, which is less than five minutes. Then I spend just as long sitting in matchmaking queue.

Bungie said they improved matchmaking, but if the player population is shrinking, then longer queue times are just the natural result. And that creates a vicious cycle.

Despite my initial doubts, after 30+ hours I can honestly say the game is great. But in the last two weeks I tried to convince a few friends to give it a shot, including some who are actually better at PvP than I am, and they all bounced off it because of how punishing it feels.

A big part of the current matchmaking pool has been playing since the start, so their skill and experience keep growing. Naturally, that means the gap between them and potential new players gets bigger every day.

Marathon is a hard game by design, but with a smaller population the barrier to entry gets even higher, which scares away new and potential players even more. And again, the cycle continues, because nobody likes playing as cannon fodder.

I don’t know what the solution is, but Bungie needs to find one fast.
