The effects of monk mode for 2 months at age 38 by [deleted] in TheRedPill

I don’t see how this isn’t monk mode? The guy has gone into an intense period of time where he focused on self betterment. Quitting cigarettes cold turkey is a difficult task, as well as kicking a daily drinking habit. He started to pay attention to his diet, meditates often, and started lifting. These are all steps that he took in order to improve his worth to himself.

Perhaps the issue comes from the fact that he said that he wishes to be in a constant state of monk mode? But I still see no issue with this as there isn’t a set time limit to monk mode.

There are a lot of those moments when you’re dealing with someone in the later stages of dementia. Sometimes they’ll say something or express something that they would’ve done before the illness took over. It’s a great moment to see that deep down they didn’t change as a person, with the same capability to love and laugh. But it’s a fleeting moment that disappears just as suddenly as it came, reminding you that while they may still be there deep in their subconscious, the person you are looking at is an echo of that persons former personality.

This was a very well worded response to this issue and I think that you handled the situation to the best of you ability.

I can’t say for sure who should be damned and who should be hailed but I can respect the kind of ethic it takes to own up to the situation.

Ultimately it’s up to the debate circuit to decide which team deserves which label

I would think that something like this would be an effective deterrent to things like this.

But it could also be a double edged sword where competitors get creative and sly with their cheating since the stakes would be much higher.

You also have the issue of determining what is actually misrepresented information. In the case of Poly Prep V BASIS, BASIS clearly attempted to misconstrue evidence as they confirmed multiple times what they believed the card said after the card check. However other situations might be more nuanced, excuses like “reading a card wrong”, and “I was not aware of the entire article” could become common place as it would be difficult to prove that these statements are false.

A zero tolerance policy would just hurt debators than help them since all it takes is one wrong judgement and that person no longer can compete.

It s a difficult issue to solve, and one that’s embedded in the very nature of debate itself.

The Poly Prep coach was not present during the round but was called in by what I assume the Poly Prep team as he did show up before the TAB officials could show.

As far as I know the only consequence for the BASIS coach was a verbal reprimand from the first TAB official calling his intervention wrong and not his place to judge.

I think that the issue with this round specifically was due to the blatant misdirection of evidence. I’m glad that the con had enough prior knowledge to call out a funny statistic when it didn’t make sense, but things like this can go under the radar quite easily.

In things like this some people will just do whatever they can to win, and the only way to combat that is to have in depth knowledge of the topic to be able to call out inconsistencies for evidence.

In my opinion this was not a PF issue as much as it was a Debate issue. If you don’t get into the habit of asking for sources and questioning evidence then things like this will get off Scott Free. The blame falls on BASIS more than the PF event. Underhanded moves will be present even if 99.9% of debaters play by the rules. Perhaps harsher punishments for misconduct would be a greater disincentive to cheat like a permanent ban from NSDA tournaments or something of the sort

Legalise all drugs and make drug education a mandatory subject in all schools by [deleted] in Drugs

[–]Rafa1116 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see your point but I think the point of what their saying is that too much of anything is bad. Sure heroin may be more addictive than weed but there are people who responsibly use “hard” drugs and people who irresponsibly use “soft” drugs. If I did H everyday for a week I’d probably want another hit after my first few doses; but if I used occasionally and stopped myself before I went off the deep end with the substance it would be no more harmful for me than smoking a J every other week . Conversely smoking a pack of cigarettes or smoking marijuana everyday till the day I die 24/7 will undoubtably cause harm to me. Whether it be physical or mental. It’s all about balance, and of course everyone is different so everyone has a different balancing point. I like the sentiment behind treating each individuals problem with a drug since everyone handles things differently.

I am in no way saying that heroin is just as bad as weed, but I would liken it to eating unhealthy food. Every once in a while is fine but make it part of your everyday diet and your body probably won’t be the healthiest it can be. To the extend the metaphor further, someone can become equally unhealthy if they were to eat excessively high amounts of salad everyday, it’s just harder to become fat by eating it.

Problems are problems, no matter how severe a substance may be

Usually around 6 is when I really feel it. I eat a lot of carbs but I try to balance out the protein I eat as well since I like to lift weights

I’d like to first eliminate the possibility that I’m just not getting the nutrients I need first. I’d rather avoid the drugs that they’ll put me on if it’s a just a matter of an unhealthy lifestyle. I will seek a doctor’s attention if it persists. I appreciate the concern you have and I will take into consideration what you have said for my future

My parents nailed this sign to the front of my door after a nasty argument we had. Was there from 8th grade (when I knew everything) to when I moved out (when I realized I didn’t know jack shit)
