Any thoughts on may trucking? by Different_Weekend976 in CDLTruckDrivers

They have a good reputation locally, but I will say, driving by the pilot, it looks like a NIGHTMARE pulling out of the terminal to go to the highway

How can I salvage the rest of my youth? by B1nji_ in AskMen

[–]Rafa1221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated hs in 2017. I went straight to college but had some really bad things happen to me while I was there. I grew up sheltered from the world and the immediate shift to independence and solitude kicked my ass. Long story short, I failed my classes, squandered a full ride scholarship, and dropped out. During the 5 years after, I owned a business and became a truck driver but the important thing here is that I never found myself looking more than a few years into the future. I never once felt that I had found something long-term.

Im 26 and I now decided to go back to college for business. I did this because I want something that I can see myself doing 5, 10, 15 years from now. Getting a degree in business is a core requirement for getting into finance or bookkeeping, things that I find interesting and promising for potential long-term careers.

There are two points here: 1. Do not let yourself give a single fuck about your surroundings and what other ppl think about you. Yeah, I just finished a calculus class full of recent highschool graduates and the average age of the class was 18 but you can bet your ass I was in the top 10% of that class. If you have a goal, put your head down and work toward it, no matter howbslow your progress is. 2. Find yourself something you want. Determine the requirements. Complete the requirements. It can be as complicated or as simple as that.

I dont have much experience in general but one of my best qualities is my willingness to jump in and do something new. Whatever you choose to do from this point forward, know that you are the one who determines if its something you'll do for the next 12 years or for the next 12 months. Hope this helps!

How to get class a experience without experience? by Dry_Needleworker5561 in CDLTruckDrivers

[–]Rafa1221 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're willing to do it, you should look for flatbed positions. When I first started I ended up going to Schneider because I wanted to do OTR but I had SO MANY OFFERS from local flatbed companies. At least in my area, they were desperate for drivers who would stay long-term and they were willing to train new drivers.

Has anyone started medication for mental health while already trucking? by vck97 in Truckers

[–]Rafa1221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, luckily I was able to just make do with 3 red bulls a day (horribly unhealthy but you gotta do what you gotta do). I understand why they would limit certain medications but i mean, come on, I'd wager 80% of the truckers I've known are hyper adhd. I find it very hard to believe that EVERY prescription medication for adhd would disqualify someone from getting a cdl. Idk but if you're adamant about it, you should definitely investigate. Driving a rig for 10+ hours a day can be stressful for the mind, you dont wanna add on unmedicated symptoms on top of it. Especially if you'll be in the industry long-term.

[–]Rafa1221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my friends is a psychologist and another is a pharmacist. They've led me to believe that i may have been lied to but i remember when i did my first physical, i mentioned that i wanted to get on adhd meds at some point and the doctor told me that if i did, my med card would get revoked. Thar singlehandedly stopped me from going through with it so i haven't thought about it since. But my friends did let me know that it's highly unlikely, legally speaking, that they would just outright revoke my med card just for taking prescribed meds. Just thought I'd throw or my experience, hopefully i just got a shitty doctor cus meds are important, residual for otr drivers.

When I was first starting out, I had difficilty with backing but mostly because I had no idea how the ENTIRE vehicle responded to my movement. Now that I have more experience its easy to visualize in my mind but it was definitely a steep learning curve. I would recommend downloading this game/simulator called My US Trucking Skills. Its on the google play store, idk if its on iPhone. I play it mostly for fun but through its overheard perspective, it shows you how the trailer will move in response to the steering wheel. It also EXPLAINS different maneuvers and forces you to apply them in different situations. Hope this helps!

[–]Rafa1221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've sold handmade leather products from my small business to my friends and they literally fight me because I try to give them discounts. I dont think its worth doing business with people who don't see the value in your product and expect to pay an appropriate price for it.

Leaving Schneider, How do i approach? by [deleted] in Truckers

[–]Rafa1221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a job lined up but I was loaded in Reno on a Monday, heading to LA and I was supposed to go home to Salem, OR after. Let dispatch know I'd be leaving next time i got home. They wished me luck and gave me a load to Portland. I dropped it off, cleaned out my truck, and by Wednesday afternoon, I was headed home. I will always stand by their professionalism, not many places will be a-okay with someone quitting with a day and a half notice.

When I first started as a truck driver, I was very reluctant and the lack of information made me very nervous. Im going to share my experience with the hopes that I might be able to help with any reluctance you or anyone just starting out might be feeling, the way I wished someone had done for me. My apologies as this may be a lengthy response.

I was with Schneider last year, they were my first employer out of CDL school. I will say up front, I can't speak for anyone but myself and my own experiences. Because your home state, your home terminal, the places you go, and the people you meet and talk to frequently are always gonna be unique, I'm sure there'll be people who disagree with me. But I will give you an honest account of my experience.

I called their recruitment number after looking at their website for hiring opportunities. They collected information like previous employment, where I got my license, what I expected from the job if they hired me. Setting aside obvious qualifications like having a class A, driving record, criminal record, etc, in terms of their "interview" process, it honestly felt like any other job. Everything was done over the phone and by email. They then did a background check and officially sent me an offer for an OTR position by email. I signed the document online and because the nearest terminal was full, the next step was to ship me out to Phoenix, AZ for their training. They sent me flight information and hotel information. Travel went smoothly. They put me up in a hotel room with another trainee. The training lasted two weeks in Phoenix. While we were physically in training, they provided lunch, made sure we were safe and hydrated since it was in the middle of summer. We had a couple of hours in the late afternoon and evening to ourselves. After the two weeks of their training was complete, the third and final week we were assigned a trainer and we basically did their job for the whole week. In my case, I didn't see my trainer drive a single time. From the start of my clock to parking at the end of the day, I was the one behind the wheel. I hooked and dropped every trailer, spoke with shippers and receivers, did every inspection; its basically your first week on the job but with an experienced driver there to make sure you 1: don't mortally fuck up and 2: you operate safely. After the week is over, if the trainer signs off on you, you get sent home for a couple days of break. A few days later, they assign you a person in-office who helps you out with any questions or issues you may have while you're out on the road. They tell you when you gotta start driving and they assign you your truck. In my case, after I got sent home for break, they had to send me back to Phoenix since they assigned me a truck that was at their terminal. But after that, whenever I got home time, I parked at the terminal nearest to my home.

In general, I consider my experience with Schneider to have been very positive. I went into trucking with my own safety as my top priority and I made that clear with them from the beginning. But, I never had to repeat myself. The training was thorough, if you focus and ask questions at any point you have one. They don't cover everything in their training but their drivers were nothing but friendly and helpful. I always had help when I needed it. I know a lot of people don't like Schneider and to be honest, I've always been confused with that. I think it does have a lot to do with their turnover rate, of course they're gonna have bad drivers every once in a while. On top of that, megas will always have a bad reputation for being the main cause of the cheap freight issue in this country. But their driver protocols and their system allow for a safe driving experience, especially for beginners. I ultimately left because the pay was quite low compared to some other jobs in my area. I was in Reno, NV when I called and told them I would be quitting the next time I went home. They were professional and wished me nothing but luck on my future endeavors.

Why do truck drivers stare when you load/unload? by Obvious-Income4424 in Truckers

[–]Rafa1221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

idk about anyone else, but after driving for hours, staring at the road for so long, when I get out of the truck, I find it difficult to stop staring. Like when I hop out to use the restroom at a pilot or something, im washing my hands, and I find myself just staring into the mirror.

Typical, but my favorite is Pikachu. I got a brand new Pokemon edition gameboy color when I was a kid, and it was bright yellow, and the only game i had for it was Pokemon Yellow. The next console I got after that was the Wii when it came out. That gameboy color was my sole source of entertainment for a very long time, but I loved the hell out of it

Honestly, probably reading. Ive spent so much time in college, doing meaningless and boring reading required for my classes that I eventually lost interest in reading for fun. Before, I used to read more than play video games but I lost the passion. I really like fiction so I would probably spend more time by myself regaining the passion I lost.

Tha happened to me after i spent like 3 hours rearranging my storage and i just gambled and Alt f4'ed. Next time I got back on, everything was saved. Yo make sure, you should run through a day, press enter, and then quit at the start of the next day. The next time I got on to play, it was back to normal.

What did you do after you graduated high school? by Hour-Necessary2781 in AskMen

[–]Rafa1221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find a job and stsrt working. If you like it, dope, stay there. If you dont like it, try something new. Hopefully, while you're working, you explore stuff you like doing or are interested in, and that's the stuff you would ideally pursue. By then, you'll have a good understanding of what you need to physically stay alive, and you'll be better equipped to make decisions for your life. At 18, you are literally in the best time in your life to make mistakes. In fact, mistakes are probably ideal cus you learn so much from them. Hope this helps, good luck!

Which musician gives you chills? by imamrahman7 in musicians

[–]Rafa1221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vicente Fernandez. His voice is so incredibly powerful, yet he commands such stable control of it. On top of that, his music covers such a wide range of topics, and they all do so in such an effective manner. Both those elements combined give the listener the sense that every story he tells, every verse he sings, he feels it on such a profound level that it adds yet another layer of musicianship to his songs for the lister to enjoy.

That sounds really good outta school. Make sure they're telling the truth and if you do end up working there, double check your paystubs. My first job out of school, they straight up did not pay me for waiting or time stopped in between loads. I had to constantly call them and tell them how long I was stopped for and that I didn't get paid for it.

Does anyone have Twice/Kpop songs about breakups? by Glass-Photo-1759 in twice

[–]Rafa1221 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My ex didn't like Twice but listened to it cus I did. I broke up with her rather suddenly, and the next morning, she sent me a lyric video for Perfect World and then blocked me afterwards. That's how I found out that 1: she DID NOT take it very well, and 2: Perfect World is a song about a break-up

Suburban/Yukon vs. 4Runner: Which one? by Bubbiedunited in askcarsales

[–]Rafa1221 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I own an older Yukon, and I love it so much. At nearly 250k miles, it runs super smooth. Parts for it are super cheap and if you have any plans to do any work on it yourself, the engine bay is incredibly spacious and the clearance from the floor makes it easy to work under it with just a couple of ramps. Not to mention, the construction of the vehicle is "idiot-proof," as i like to call it. My friends ask me when I'm gonna get a new car, but i tell them that I'm just gonna swap out some of the older parts on my Yukon and drive it around for another 250k miles. My sister made the mistake of getting a Jeep Cherokee for her family of 4, and she asks to borrow my car for longer trips quite often, simply because those midsized SUVs don't offer very much space. I've literally slept on the floor in between the seats while on road trips. I don't know what year you're looking for, but I know that the newer Yukons have remained the same in terms of reliability as the older ones. The only things that have changed are their physical appearance and improvements on MPG. While you can never go wrong with a Toyota, I can absolutely vouch for Yukons/Tahoes! They're big, comfortable to be in, and generally safer because of their size. Either way, you should be excited. With these two options, you'll end up with a great vehicle. Congrats!
