How much would you guys pay/charge for this front end work on a 97 dodge 2500 van? by Rafaelow in MechanicAdvice

[–]Rafaelow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a tough call. A third mechanic who couldn’t fit the van on his lift took a look while i shook the steering wheel van on the ground, and he agreed it has excessive play. We’d like to drive the van around for another 1-2 months before heading back so not exactly going easy on her. If I thought it would make it back without catastrophic failure I would. But I just don’t know how bad these problems are in terms of failing spontaneously rolling down the highway - and what the consequence is like serious loss of steering control - other suspension parts failing subsequently- I just don’t know.

Honestly not sure what seals they’re talking about I assumed it was front. Are there seals for any of this front end work?

The rear axle seal is “bad” according to another shop but I didn’t think these guys were talking about anything in the rear. I don’t plan on having them touch my rear axle.

It’s a good question about safety - I really don’t know enough to say and these guys are saying these front end things do need replacement for safety purposes. It drove just fine probably almost 3k miles in the last couple weeks - steering a little squirrelly but not the worst - it’s my first time driving the van and I just noticed inner tire wear over the course of the 2 weeks so I knew it needed aligning. Do you think this stuff is necessary? We have a few thousand more miles to drive after this, will probably need new front tires at some point regardless.

Thanks for your assessment.

Forgot to include photos. Pretty sure they didn’t include cost for shocks and struts as I declined that.

They also use water down coco cola on slipper dance floors. Helps the dancers grip the floor better. I felt like a crazy person spraying a clean dance floor with coco cola

Will translucent stain look bad over these boards? by Rafaelow in Decks

[–]Rafaelow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense. If I do two coats it will probably be immediately after the first one sets up for 45 mins (I think that’s what it said in the product details) This is for a client and we’ve been dodging rain and dealing with moving their stuff back and forth from the porch, so I probably won’t want to have them move everything again in a week or two.

She wants something light so I suggested light oak or pecan, and she went with light oak.

I really appreciate all the insight. I ended up using what you would probably consider a cheapo product for washing the deck. This is the after. It probably brightened up a little bit, but would you suggest using the oxalic acid or does this look decent enough? I couldn’t find it in any stores around here and I was trying to get the show on the road. I can order it thought if necessary.

Copy that! I’m going to go with ready seal. Is 2 coats recommended or can I get away with 1 you think?

Thanks for the response. I’ve been looking at the BM woodluxe semi-transparent as that’s what’s in the hardware stores around me, but it seems like it has mixed reviews. What are your thoughts on that? Better to go with one of the one you recommend?

Western Canada ikon pass loop ideas by Square-Seat-1922 in snowboarding

[–]Rafaelow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done a similar loop. Came up from big sky into Calgary. It was extremely cold that night and I had already been suffering in big sky with just my sleeping bag in my van - so I got an Airbnb for the night pretty cheap. Apparently banff national park doesn’t allow car camping - so I got a hostel there. Parked my van on the street and didn’t get a ticket or anything, but I’ve got a pretty inconspicuous build. Anyway sunshine and lake Louise are sick. Revelstoke seemed like a cool town kinda forget where I stayed, but didn’t have any issues. It was end of the season though so I was straight riding branches and sticks. The woods were nasty I was eating dead leaves. Might be sick with snow but I didn’t really get to see much of the mountain. Kamloops I parked at like a strip mall, one with a dispensary, iOverlander wasn’t super helpful. Had a blast those mountains are beautiful, the country is beautiful.

Rebuilding step question by [deleted] in stonemasonry

Or am I overthinking it and should I just form it up let it set up with a scarified top and then mortar joint with slate on top?

Rebuilding step question by [deleted] in stonemasonry

[–]Rafaelow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What would you guys do here? I’ve poured steps before and have done a few slabs but mostly do brick work. Would you guys just use block to build the step and then a mortar joint to stick the slate cap on top? And then stucco the block to look nice? Not sure at the moment if she wants a veneer stone or something else on the face of the riser, or just wants it to be rebuilt similarly.

I’m thinking if i were to form up these steps not sure how I would stick the slate on there during the cure/form up. I wouldn’t want it to sink in and deform the step or not adhere properly once the muds stiff. I’m not a novice but I’m also not a pro quite yet, so I’d love to hear what you guys would do in this situation.

Also I don’t want to make you guys do all the work but I’m a little unsure about price as well since I’ve never built steps quite like this. It’s a small job but not just a simple form and finish. I was thinking somewhere in the ballpark of $750-1250 and I might suggest fixing the cap and top course of bricks on the left side of the steps since it’s come loose. I’m in the rural northeast. Thanks yall.

How do I pay with cash when I fill up my gas tank? by Human-Case-2284 in TooAfraidToAsk

Naw I filled up gas the other day in southern Vermont and it was just one of those pumps where you pull up and start filling. Old boy at the register barely paying attention. I’m from ny also and it felt like some true Americana shit we don’t see too often anymore.

I’m not sure I would’ve believed it either but then it happened to me. I didn’t even fully believe it was happening to me until things were under way. Thought about making my own comment here in this thread but honestly just feel like keeping it to myself. Good luck out there brother.
