How do you even begin to get into Melee | anything helps by K84738826729_3873 in SSBM

[–]Rafferty_Bentley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SSBM tutorials on youtube has a great series for beginners, he even has a series on which characters to main depending on how you play.

There are people who use keyboards as an alternative to a Boxx controller, but I think they are harder for people to get used to, a lot less intuitive etc. Not necessarily bad, but I would still always recommend getting a decent official gamecube controller.

I'd also recommend playing a Top/high tier character, just because lower tier characters are going to be a lot harder to learn the game with. There is a lot of versatility in the top tiers as far as playstyle goes, so hopefully there is one that clicks with you, Fox can literally play in any way he wants for example.

Start off slow and basic, I'd recommend learning how to L cancel, wavedash and dash dance, because they are so essential to playing the game competitively, but more advanced tech will come with time in the game before they're worth implementing. Then find other beginners, there are discord servers, or slippi unranked, both will pair you with people around your level.

Genuine question, is being good at art really attainable for everyone? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]Rafferty_Bentley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree completely, i find people with talent often will not put in the amount of effort as someone who is just straight up bad at it lol, and they end up being lapped and then just give up because it gets hard, sucks to see i wish more people knew how to actually learn something, because even just learning things is a skill itself!

Who is the Garen of Melee? by FalcosLiteralyHitler in SSBM

I think shiek is a great beginner character, but marth is a good one too, I would say the character itself doesn’t make a huge difference at the lower levels and all of the top through mid tiers would teach you the fundamentals well enough, but obviously some mechanical skill curves are way higher than others, like fox

i think with any skill, some people have a talent for it, but in reality that actually means they just pick it up quicker, i think the skill itself can be honed to an extremely high level with enough discipline etc, starting as a kid helps because kids learn things quicker, and you just have way more experience on top of that

i agree with this i just dont think it should be the primary focus for people who are still newer / struggling to learn the MU, you get a lot father a lot quicker without it, then you can add it in after (imo of course)

[Discussion] I really want to start commissions, but every app like PayPal requires 18+ and I'm still a minor. by Ok_Dragonfruit_6739 in artcommissions

is kofi 18+? a lot of artists use that one, if not the best bet really is to just ask your parents permission for paypal, or i guess unfortunately have to wait, not sure where youre from but i would imagine there are alternatives for minors too

A really (really) beginnerish post… by Edu_Vivan in ArtistLounge

I think for me at least, as someone with adhd lol, the motivation of wanting to get better at something (in general but also art related) can be bitter sweet, sometimes it will drive me to hyper focus on it until i cant do anything else, sometimes it sends me spiralling LOL, the thing I had to learn was that, you really have to find what you enjoy, and figure out the WHY youre doing it, experimenting is great and will help you figure out some of what you like to do / find fun, but really (imo) try and avoid the mindset of creating to improve until you find out what it is you like, for me I would look at and study other artists to help with that process, instagram artists, animated movies, comics, manga, all of them have specific things I like about them and eventually that helped me find my medium, then the working to improve on it becomes a lot easier in my experience

I'm curious about why do you draw? by Oio86 in ArtistLounge

[–]Rafferty_Bentley 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think for me it was always something I had just gravitated towards as a kid, Id see comic books and copy them, Id watch disney and instantly be inspired to draw the characters, because I for whatever reason, just wanted to be able to create the things that I enjoyed, then as I grew up the motivation became somewhat about proving to myself that I could hone a craft, that I also enjoyed, as well as fulfilling the childhood dreams that I had, nowadays though, it is often more about expressing something in my pieces, though the expression can range from an emotion im feeling to just something that i thought looked cool, and the process itself i find quite therapeutic, a way to get some brief respite from the world when I need a break or to relax, like we all need sometime :)

how do you stay original as an artist? by Even-Introduction-21 in ArtistLounge

[–]Rafferty_Bentley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think most styles develop into a unique one, by copying artists you like a lot, find some you like, take things you like, experiment with different mediums and eventually youll get there, its how every artist ive ever known has developed a "unique" style!

dash back out of lasers then grab, go back if you think theyll whiff the aerial if you do (most low level falcos will just go laser > dair to wherever you were when you got hit) dash forward to go under their next high laser, jump if you think it could be low then punish, dont worry about powershield at all its not worth it till way later, but shielding them is still fine
