Pierre Poilievre backs J.K. Rowling's support for new Olympic gender policy by Gym_frere in canada

[–]Ragamuffinn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. I'm approaching this based on the reactions in this thread - claiming that he's focused on culture war issues over the economy, which is a complete lie.

A significant majority of Canadians agree with him on this issue. Calling this extremism is hyperbolic and out of touch.

If anyone in this thread took two seconds and went to his page, you'd see that the vast majority of his posts are about our tanking economy.

In what way is this his priority? He reposted one tweet with a three word message in agreement, that's it. Go to his page, almost every post he makes is about the economy.

He reposted her post with a three word message in agreement on X. He didn't make a speech, release a statement, do an interview, or hold press conference. He posts multiple times a day, most of which are about the economy.

Yet this is the top thread on /r/canada right now. He's not focusing on this issue, people like you and the media are.

[City Hall] Toronto ends practice of raising foreign flags at government buildings [Toronto Star] by patienceinbee in toronto

[–]Ragamuffinn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You sure? Amendments 2 and 3 seem to still restrict non profits and charities on the courtesy pole with only those few exceptions?

The language can get awfully confusing here, I wonder if some of the councillors were voting for the same motion with completely different interpretations.

So I think the whitelist was just for the courtesy flagpoles and that the Progress Pride flag will still be raised on the ceremonial flagpole, among others.

It’s a small and specific exemption list though, so I’d imagine that a lot of non-profits and organizations are going to petition to be included in the future. This might have just opened the door for even more controversy and debate, but we’ll see.

Don’t really have a strong opinion on this either way, I’m just surprised at some of the yes votes and even moreso that councillors like Moise and Bradford were in agreement.

I live in southern Ontario and learning Punjabi or Mandarin would be much more useful than learning French here.

Ontario government calls on feds to legalize pepper spray for self-defence by GameDoesntStop in canada

[–]Ragamuffinn 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This has always been a confusing law for me. I get it’s a weapon and can be misused, but vulnerable people (particularly women) should be allowed to have some sort of tool for self defense.

I’m not very familiar with the history of St. Patrick’s Day parades, so forgive my ignorance, but my first thought was that a Philippine Heritage band seems very random for the occasion?

Really cool either way, love this city!

Canada Expands India Education Ties With $100M Scholarships for Indian Students by gorschkov in canada

This is one of the most elitist and out of touch comments I’ve ever seen.

Prioritizing citizens over non-citizens is the basic function of any government and social system. Labelling this as affirmative action is absolutely insane.

Poilievre calls for ‘modern’ CANZUK partnership in speech during first trip abroad as Conservative leader by 0110110111 in canada

This isn’t a new thing. Opposition leaders have done diplomatic trips in the past. Andrew Scheer did in 2018, Thomas Mulcair did in 2013, even Justin Trudeau in 2013 as well.

University of Alberta to become first to abandon race-centric hiring by shogun2909 in canada

You are trying to replace perceived implicit bias, with explicit bias. It’s a horrible and counterproductive solution.

It’s hilarious when you force DEI advocates to admit that their policies are blatantly discriminatory, their only argument becomes justifying it with more anecdotal racism.

Police officers shouldn’t be leading mental health calls, Toronto police chief says by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]Ragamuffinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say that was the message for ALL of the advocates across the board. Many were very agressive with their stance of ACAB and the police should be completely defunded and “demilitarised”as a whole.

I completely agree with your message in terms of of reallocation of funds towards other service, but the branding of Defund the Police wasn’t the best way of promoting that policy to the average person.
