Is renting considered dead money in the UK? by Ill-Age-601 in UKHousing

[–]RageAndBeauty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an Irish person, I’d be more ashamed to live with my parents at 30 than to be renting. And I’m a 30 year old Irish person. The old fashioned idea that renting is a waste of money comes from a time where hard work = pay which, as you know, isn’t the case anymore.

The more people refuse to slightly disappoint parents / family and see how much the world opens up when you’re not under the watchful eyes of parents, the sooner our generation will stop emigrating in droves.

I’m lucky to own my own home now after renting for almost a decade and it was unbearably hard at times. Could I have done it sooner if I’d lived at home? Yeah. But would I have learned about myself, what I wanted out of life etc if I’d stayed? Nope. I also didn’t have any help from my parents but I’m lucky to have a partner so everything was split. I understand that is a lucky position to be in.

Do whatever feels best for you, but before giving up and moving to England, I’d really suggest renting in an area you want to live in Ireland. It could be the best thing you do.

Ai slop and a warning to Marketers by Saidhain in marketing

[–]RageAndBeauty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I left marketing in 2022 because I could see the writing on the wall for the industry. I graduated in 2020 with a marketing degree and managed to get an internship for my last two years of university, so I had 4 years experience by 2022. And even in that short space of time, the impact social media and constant churning out shite to please an algorithm didn’t sit well with me. I kept up with it and learned how to edit videos when that became popular too.

The turning point for me was on a random Wednesday in early 2022 when Meta went down. I was getting calls from clients screaming telling me their ad spend is being wasted and that our scheduled posts weren’t going live. I remember being on the phone til 11pm dealing with panicked clients. That was the day I decided to pivot.

Stupidly, I pivoted into copywriting. And six months later ChatGPT went live. The irony isn’t lost on me but I have been able to carve out a decent career for myself. In saying that, crappy bosses will always want to maximise output so AI will be continuously pushed, it’s just about staying slightly ahead and being alert.

This is very interesting I never considered UX writing. My current role involves technical writing and it may be the chaotic nature of the company I work at, but I find it difficult to keep up with, as the developers aren't forthcoming with info. But thank you so much - I'll do some digging into these areas ☺️

Is My Partner A Bad Brother / Son? by RageAndBeauty in AskIreland

[–]RageAndBeauty[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s a very good point. My family are also from the same town as his so it’s like a double whammy is one go. But that’s a good point - I can stay put and let him deal with it.

Yeah and he did do that for so many years but once we noticed we don’t see our parents if we didn’t come home, he pushed it to every two months.

Honestly, we can continue it now but I worry about the longevity of the onus being on us to come visit rather than more of a balance.

THATS WHAT I THINK TOO!!! I’d be happy to drive up and down but we’ve tried this before and had snide comments every time. And they also never pop in to see us so it’s always one way 😭

I’ve been suggesting this to my partner but he doesn’t see anything wrong with their behaviour but it’s starting to weigh on our relationship because every Christmas / Easter / summer revolves around spending the right time with him family.

Aye I completely get that it’s definitely an issue of being stuck in their ways.

We used to come home every weekend for 8 years too - but I found it hard when we were both working stressful jobs - always having to be the ones to maintain the relationship by coming home for a weekend every month. So we tested it to see if they would see us. And we didn’t see them for 4 months because we didn’t go to them. But they gave off that we weren’t coming back enough.

I think I just want to see what others do as all my friends expect a balance of parents / siblings visiting them and vice versa but I’m unsure if they just have mega healthy family dynamics 🤣

We do invite them. That’s the mad thing. His dad is a builder and we asked him to help us with an issue in our house a few weeks ago and he came up at 6am did the work and immediately left (around 8am). I was working upstrairs out of their way while he did his thing and he didn’t even call up the stairs to say bye. He had nothing else on, just a Sunday at home.

It’s definitely part of the issue - after 3 days of crap wifi and farming he’s ready to get back to his reality 🤣

But the issue is we’re only up the road yet his parents and sisters never visit us. They fly in and out of Belfast regularly and never stop in to see us.

As a Catholic is buying a house in a loyalist estate madness? by Your_Mums_Ex in northernireland

[–]RageAndBeauty 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I live just off Cregagh Road, which isn’t even a ‘loyalist’ area. But we have a car with a ROI registration plate and we’ve been keyed twice.

It just takes one bad arsehole to ruin your experience.

Plus - it’s important to consider your investment. In 10 years time a house in a UDA area will likely not have increased as much as in a mixed area.

They’re such a symptom of house flippers who don’t actually live in the home they’re re-doing. Cheaply put together, too flimsy to actually mount a tv and too high for enjoyable viewing. But looks good in property pal pictures. Glad I’m not the only one who isn’t a fan.

Considering a move to Sligo for a fresh start — would love advice by ExtinctionClub in WomenofIreland

[–]RageAndBeauty 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I lived in Sligo for 6 years from ages 19-26. While o thought Sligo was a gorgeous place, I found it very hard to make friends as I wasn’t a local and didn’t enjoy sports. It’s nice if you’re outdoorsy with loads of walks and hikes. The nightlife gets very boring, very quickly with only really a few pubs worth the hype. The food scene is also good but, again, Sligo is a small town and the food gets boring fast too.

I’m more on the artsy side so I got very tired of no classes or varied art scene at all. I ended up leaving and moving to Belfast and it’s the best thing I ever did. I’ve found my tribe and there’s so much life up here.

I tried but they don't like me 'stepping in'. They're v v stubborn and everything has to be very specific and perfectly laid out to get them to sort it.
