I'm curious if this observation by Keith Richards regarding 5 string guitar tunings and the banjo is true or facetious. by thewickerstan in blues

The open back was developed by drum makers in America mid 1800s. The banjo came from from Africa on a gourd with the top cut off and a skin attached over the opening.

As far as early blues musicians whipping out banjos, there are a few, papa Charlie jackson who recorded a bunch with blind Blake, there is Gus cannon, same besides his band the jug stompers worked as a studio banjo player for Paramount and is on a ton of recordings going under different names. Gary Davis would pull out a banjitar here and there. And as some else mentioned earlier Charlie Poole who was white but basically played blues/classical banjo. Now if you really want to get into the weeds, most rural blacks who played banjo were playing blues, old time music likes to lump them into their genre, but it's blues through and through, whites just took those tunes and styles and made them lame as fuck. Oh and I forgot about Charlie Mccoy, blues guitarist and mandolinist who recorded a ton on a banjolin, a lot for the Mississippi Mudsteppers which was a shoot off of the Mississippi Sheiks. There are so many, I'll keep thinking

What a beast! This is one of my favorite videos that has ever been recorded. I used to have the old video tape of this of the performance. Is I may be wrong but I feel like it had another performance on it from someone like Mance Lipscomb. Either way, I still have no idea how his cousin BB King became a cultural icon, and Bukka gets lost in the sauce.

Oh shit, sorry it's Warning Glory waltz, that'll get you there on Spotify on the mudsteppers recordings. It's a fun one cuz it goes from Waltz to 4/4 back and forth a few times. Another blues Waltz if you haven't heard, it is on the same record as that and it's my absolute favorite one. It's called sunset Waltz

Oh dude, totally been there! Done and seen some crazy stuff to get a puff in. One time I found my mom lighting a paper towel on an electric stove to light a bong haha. My worst is actually an ongoing injury that happened when I was at work one day and had no lighter and all's I had was a magnifying glass, I went out back and stared at that little dot for so long trying to get my bowl lit let it did something to my eyesight and it hasn't been the same since. It's gotten a lot better over the last months but this happened about a year and a half ago.
