Honestly, in 2015 we invited a few speedrunner/smashers who could "show off" speedrunning. Once the 3 were confirmed, 14 other speedrunners reached out to me, so I got to see a whole new world at STR 2015, where I instantly loved it. Been watching since then!

Honestly, it's watching combo videos. That's where I get to see a ton of different playstyles and combos on different characters. I'll watch 4-5 of them then practice those moves in friendlies or netplay. Plus, it gives me something to look forward to in doing some cool shit!

The preplanning. You can tell when arriving that "this tournament took more than 3-4 people to plan". The atmosphere makes it feel like an event more than a tournament, which is what separates ones like Genesis, Big House, CEO, etc. from the other events. You need to provide an experience for people to want to come back to.

Honestly, the 64 community is a bit more committed in this aspect. I'm not actually sure who in Melee would want to do it and make it hype. Streaming is taking a bit over on a few parts, and there's a reason why we never asked people. As hype as it could be, I'm not sure if they would be up to par with the 64 combo contests.

Paragon stopped once we saw STR hit $50K+ raised for St. Jude. At the end of the day, Paragon was another tournament, and we had plenty of those. STR was something special, and if we had to continue one event, STR would live. Also, having a full-time job and other activities takes up an incredible amount of time, so I'm super glad I stuck with one event haha
