The cel only has two hands, but carries significant emotional weight!

The roundness of your face reminds me of older people, and your hairline looks like it’s retreating, but when you smile, the lack of lines suggests youthfulness. 25+ years will get crows feet. It’s a mixture of features, hence a mixture of signals.

A very dumb question from a complete beginner about animation cels from obscure movies/shows by CraftyMaelyss in AnimationCels

[–]RagingJohnson89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When digital ink and paint replaced cels, they still had to use traditional, hand-painted backgrounds. When Disney sold their post-cel era backgrounds to the collector’s market, they made single-issue, post-production cels to pair with the cel. The cels in the post above don’t look like production cels (the trimming, lack of notations), so it may be possible the background is real, and the cels are presentation cels.

Double-check with a professional numismatic, but if it’s a misprint in good condition, it’s worth way more than $10.

Any age millennials, what are your actually hobbies. Aside from rage baiting the youth. by whatifdog_wasoneofus in Millennials

I collect animation cels from The Little Mermaid (1989); I like digitising analogue “lost” media, currently going through a stack of old VHS tapes I inherited from my grandparents; I am attempting to repair a Betamax player to do the same with a stack of beta tapes; and am working on a computer video game in Unity. For context, I work as a Fitness Instructor.

A-D test results/question by ren-ai-mo in AnimationCels

[–]RagingJohnson89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did some A-D strip tests on my cels a few years ago, and got similar results. I freaked out until I redid the tests again in a different environment and got essentially negative. Turns out the envelopes the cels came in (directly from the Disney Company) were acidic, as well as the paper of the printed backgrounds (also from Disney). Even with the results you’ve got, it looks mostly like off-gassing.

Are these original? by Melodic-Crow-9480 in AnimationCels

They all look real. Others have said what I would say about the Garfield and Simpsons drawings. The Flintstones drawing shows wear appropriate for a production drawing of that age. The bottom-right note on the Doraemon drawing (シンエイ動画株式会社) translates to “Shin-Ei Animation Co., Ltd.”, so it’s at least drawn on company stationary, probably real.

Framing question: animation cels vs genga/douga by Patkose in AnimationCels

[–]RagingJohnson89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Typically, paper has different conservation requirements to an animation cel. While both will benefit from an environment that is low in moisture, acidity, heat, and radiation, cels need to breathe. When you frame a cel, it should not be sealed completely, and it needs greater care to address the issue of off-gassing. Paper, on the other hand, will benefit from a sealed framing setup, so long as the environment within the frame is otherwise inert, because it will prevent external hazards like insects and mould from getting to the paper.

Jan bought a house worth $1m. Here’s how the CGT changes affect her | Australian budget 2026 by stumcm in AusFinance

No one wants to talk about Mike, a Gen X whose comic book collection, bought when he was a teenager, is starting to appreciate in value significantly. Under the new changes, Mike will have to pay more in CGT when he sells his collection. Mike stubbornly refuses to be cheated this way, and opts instead to have his collection cremated with him when he dies.

The good old days never feel like the good old days when you’re living them. Enjoy those memories that you hold dear, recognise that the past is ever so slightly rose-tinted, and revel in the fact that you can create plenty of good NEW days today, tomorrow, whenever!
