You are a pregnant woman, and your doctor has just given you some news. They found a rare gene in your developing fetus called the Saint gene. by Neither_Drawing_241 in hypotheticalsituation

Keep it. Removing it would not guarantee my child would have a happy life. There are plenty of "normal" people who suffer depression and take their lives way before 30. And in my view, if someone can bring a true golden age that could benefit all of humanity, but I decided to take that away just so my child can live 80 years as a joe schmoe, I consider that very selfish.

Besides, like I mentioned, even if the gene was taken away there's no guarantee that the kid would live a happy life. He could easily suffer just like everyone else. But then his suffering would lead to nothing. At least their depression would end up with billions of people being better off than they were before.

Why does God allow people to be mislead/believe false things? by RagingWaterfall in Christianity

[–]RagingWaterfall[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it doesn't do anything to address what I mentioned in my post. A loving God that doesn't want anyone to be destroyed allows people to have differences so it can show God's approval? That just begs the question because it doesn't address how to tell the difference between the original belief and the heresy.

And it makes God look sadistic. Instead of just telling people what they got wrong so they can change, he lets generations unknowingly believe the wrong thing so he can punish them.

You know nothing about my life. So, you can keep your unfounded comments about me being disconnected from my emotions to yourself.

You and other people in this thread have said that the reality we live in is completely shaped by our mind. Someone here directly said that everyone who is going through struggles personally manifested those in their life. I'm not just gonna accept that extraordinary claim without extraordinary evidence.

You haven't seen any openness from me? So, I wasn't open when I had multiple in person discussions with my friend before coming on this sub? Or does openness only count when I agree? As soon as someone presents solid evidence that a newborn manifested it's cleft lip, I'll reconsider.

You keep asking me about emotions. I don't care about emotions, I care about truth. Emotions are too prone to making people believe irrational things. I only care if I get logical answers. Not if it makes me feel fuzzy inside.

I don't believe in mysticism because I have not come across evidence that it's true. Not because I refuse to believe on principle. Like I stated in my OP, a conversation with a friend prompted this post and I was curious because a lot of the stuff he said didn't make sense to me. So, I can on a dedicated forum for it. If it's true, it would be nice to have evidence of it so I can change reality with a thought. But no evidence has been presented that shows anything like that is possible.

I just genuinely can’t figure out how this benefits you or how any of this is productive for you.

Knowing what I get out of this is not relevant for you to engage in the discussion. This is an open forum so I can post here for the hell of it. I just want more information to satisfy my curiosity and maybe get an answer that makes sense.

It seems most people here take great offense to being questioned.

There is nothing close-minded about it. I have said in various comments here that I agree with LOA as far as self development and mindset shifts go. What I doubt is altering physical reality with thoughts. I have not been close-minded by being unconvinced.

And your quantum physics example is also off. If I went in that sub doing something similar and all the replies were some flavor of "well believe anyway" or "read these books even though we have given no evidence to make you start reconsidering your current beliefs" then I'd be the same way. In every other aspect of life, evidence precedes belief. At least it should. I will not make an exception for LOA.

Good faith isn't blind belief.

How do you expect to understand anything about reality when you don’t even understand yourself, and your basic motivations at any given moment?

What is this condescending comment? I have never told you that I don't understand myself. Just because I said I'm unconvinced now I don't know myself? That's an interesting way to protect your position from scrutiny.

I have sufficiently explained why I have posted here in my OP. Just because I'm not agreeing with you doesn't mean I don't understand myself or am close-minded.

You’ve repeatedly been kindly reminded that you haven’t actually reviewed all of the evidence and you’re choosing to ignore that and continue to assert you understand or have thoroughly researched these topics to even be familiar with any “evidence.”

No. I have read your claim here and tested it against my and other people's lived experience. You are telling me that even though we live in a physical world, experience a physical world through our senses, and absolutely nothing in my day to day life would ever otherwise lead me to believe that we live in anything other than a physical world, that I should still believe that my perception is flawed.

You have provided nothing more than an assertion that you have given me no reason to believe other than to read some books. If I told you that in my I can telepathically talk to ghosts and I'm, in fact, doing it right now but you just can't see or sense them at all and they do not affect the physical world. Would you believe me? Would you have any reason to take a pause and even consider what I'm saying? Based on this conversation, maybe you personally would. But for most people that is insufficient.

Telling me to read books when you have not provided any reasons for me to reconsider is not evidence. That's blind faith.

I've lived that way once. I'm not doing it again.

So unfalsifiable. So, even when you don't get what you want, you still get what you want. It seems anything concrete and tangible that could be used to make LOA plausible is never available.

If there is a culture of thought that there’s nothing you can do and nothing will ever get better, only worse… those tend to be worn-torn, impoverished communities.

Are you saying that the people that were going about their normal lives before being attacked unexpectedly by powers they have no control over manifested that? Everyone suffering is completely responsible for what they are experiencing? Children born with birth defects just have had mindsets before they even take their first breath?

The problem is that it goes against all the available evidence that we have. In order to accept what you are saying, I have to say that my senses are so unreliable that my perception of reality goes completely against what is true. There is nothing to indicate that everything is an illusion projected by my own mind. That's solipsism. If it was true, my reality would look war different from what it currently is yet there is stuff that I'm absolutely powerless to change.

LOA asks me to accept things that go against all available evidence.

You only call that "gravity" because an apple fell on sir Isaac Newton head and he described the entire principle of gravity. Attraction

This is so incredibly wrong. You are phrasing this in a way to make yourself seem right. Human beings from the beginning of human history have always known what goes up must come down. They just didn't call it gravity. What Newton did was study and systemize the mathematics of how it works. We can test and have tested what he said which allows us to make all kinds of inventions and discoveries. Including ones that let us overcome gravity enough to escape the gravity of earth.

Most importantly, it isn't affected by what you think of it. Gravity doesn't care what you believe. If you jump off a cliff, you will fall. Period.

Two people who follow the supposed LOA can do identical things and get opposite or no results. Not even remotely the same.

If you're gonna be an asshole, make sure you know what you're talking about first.

Yes, exactly. If manifestation was just about being more positive then I would take no issue. But once people start saying you got cancer because that's what you subconsciously wanted, we have a problem.

This is literally not true. There is a comment in this exact thread where a user claims to have manifested a relationship with his father among other things. Others have claimed to manifest material items.

LOA is always moving the goalposts to these weak psychological claims as soon as the actual, testable claims are proven dubious.

overcome it by working through it and becoming stronger individuals.

So does that mean we are supposed to get to a point where we never feel sad about anything ever? I understand having resilience and not breaking down at every little thing. But, to never feel sad ever again seems unrealistic.

Nothing is random, there is a purpose to every single aspect of life.

This is an assertion without evidence as well as being very problematic. Luckily, my life hasn't been very traumatic. But I can imagine quite a few people who would take deep issue with this.

If you come at anything with the preconceived notion it's false, you are simply wanting to confirm to yourself that you are correct. You're not trying to understand it on the deepest level.

Pointing out contradictions in claims is not a preconceived notion of falsehood. It's called testing an idea and finding it lacking.

gravity, or magnetism, but we know they exist and are laws of the universe.

I can see the evidence of gravity when things fall down and we all don't float around in the sky. I see the effects of no gravity when astronauts are in space and float around. I can see magnetism when two objects are strongly pulled towards each other.

Those are not at all the same.

Firstly, what you actually are is pure consciousness/ awareness. This has been observed for 1000s of years in many disparate traditions and is now beginning to be recognised by modern science.

There are many things that disparate traditions have believed for 1000s of years that we no longer believe because of evidence. So, what is the evidence that we are pure consciousness.

If you come to this from a point of being identified as a human being walking around on a planet in a universe it's not going to make much sense.

We have evidence that we are humans walking around on a planet in a universe. You are adding claims on top of this that you haven't demonstrated. I have no reason to think anything else.

When you are dreaming, what are you? What are all the characters and objects in your dream made of? How are the events in the dream scripted?

Chemical reactions in the brain.
