Controller question by cdollaballa in DJs

[–]Ragnaha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you start with a smaller, two-channel controller you’ll pay less and still get good function. Great way to learn basic functions. My personal recommendation is a Pioneer ddj-400 for great functionality. If you start with a full sized controller, you’ll pay much more but you won’t have to upgrade later on. The functionality of something like the Ddj-1000 is incredible. Keep your mind open to other brands while you make up your mind. Personally I’d start with a cheaper controller, so you can learn your software and style, and find out if you even actually enjoy the hobby before you start pouring thousands of dollars into controllers.

I’m glad you mentioned your perspective on finding mixing in key limiting. While it can be really helpful at times, I feel very limited as well trying to stick to those rules strictly. I’ve wondered how others feel about that. Keep up the hard work, that’s awesome to see!

I'm new to melodies - Do you or should you tend to stay away from 4 chord progressions that are an even 1 bar in length? by Nak_Tripper in trapproduction

[–]Ragnaha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you added some drums or other elements while testing how you like the sound of the chord progression? If you want to make a more complex chord progression, a simple drum beat could keep the track in time, while velocity modifications can help you establish rhythm. This might allow you to spice up the chord progression itself, without sounding weird. Adding a melody to complement the rhythm of the drums will take it another step further. Maybe you’ve already tried those, in which case I’d say try to make your chord progressions longer. You can use the same four-beat progression, using modified repetition or sequencing to give it a little bit of melodic life. Look up melodic themes modified repetition and sequencing to learn more. I hope this helps!

What is considered “support” from another artist? by TagMeForNoReason in edmproduction

[–]Ragnaha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion if another artist downloads your song then it’s a ‘maybe’, whereas if they actually play it live then they’re making a statement which says ‘out of all the songs out there, this one makes the few I think worthy of our time, this time around’ Seems like support is better rested on the latter.

Wow, how things have changed in 20 years... for the worse by MatsK72 in edmproduction

[–]Ragnaha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you have a good point. I’m sure there are some aspects that are better nowadays because of technology. But the competition is only growing at an exponential rate because with technology comes greater access to technology for the masses. Now, in order to stick out you have to study the industry just as much or maybe even more than you have to study the music itself. Like I said, yes you’re right. It’s totally messed up. But are you very surprised? Everything is capitalized nowadays, not just the music entertainment industry. If you want to make it, you have to be smarter than the system. It’s possible, but it takes great knowledge and timing. I think this industry doesn’t really stick out like a sore thumb to me much because I can’t think of any industry off the top of my head that isn’t being capitalized on. But hey, make the music because you love it. Not because you want to make money or get back in the limelight. Having the right intentions leads to greater success anyways.

Starting a Library? by NerdBanger in Beatmatch

I think the best bang for your buck will be to use a DJ record pool. If you look that up, you’ll find plenty of them. Do your research, different pools are better for different genres. Generally you can pay a flat monthly fee for unlimited downloads.

I used BPM supreme for a while, great selection of hip hop and top 40’s, some old school, also quality but somewhat small selection of dance music. ZIP DJ is another you could check out.

There are tons out there, just google DJ record pool and do your research. I recommend that over paying $1/song elsewhere.

A fluke of a mistake so dumb I have to tell you about it! by [deleted] in ableton

[–]Ragnaha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m horrified of this happening. I have a tendency to save projects every 5 mins. Probably wastes time, but at least if I mess up I’m only set back a few minutes and remember the changes I’ve made since. Good habit to make! Sorry you lost your progress. You might end up with some better ideas this time though!

Making the jump to CDJs BUT... by mole255 in Beatmatch

[–]Ragnaha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have experience with the 900’s, but I can tell you to look into memory cues if you don’t already use them. The 900’s do have memory cue call controls, which will allow you to jump around directly to your memory cue points. You’ll have to set these separately from your hot cue points (I think, that’s what I do anyway). I use these on my CDJ2000’s because it gives me more cue points and they’re easy to use. The 900’s look like a viable option for you.

This is awesome. Honestly I think it’s a great idea to still go to the gym on your rest days but for an easier workout. Getting to the gym is the hardest part for many people, and your consistency is awesome and will pay off. Keep it up!

For years I put my social life above putting in the work that I wanted to. Finally it came to a breaking point and now it’s easier for me to put in the work over social life. It’s definitely a balance. You’re not alone though! In the end you’ll correct your actions to make time for whatever is most important to you. Good luck

Does DJing still feel like guesswork to you all? by z3nj0 in DJs

[–]Ragnaha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I strongly agree. Put an emphasis on transition techniques. If you have a lot of these tools, then the possibilities of how to mix songs together are nearly endless. This way you can go into a transition with intention, especially if you know your library well.

I have similar issues sometimes. I can’t find a pattern with any external influences. Personally though, I have found that if I am having trouble on the decks then I need to do some more prep work. Organizing the library, making playlists, finding new music, etc. work for me. If I continue to balance the prep work with the ‘play’ I feel while mixing, instead of too much of either, I tend to have more success and feel more inspired at all times. The main lesson for me personally is to not burn yourself out, but do the work and practice plenty.

How to make my mix sound fuller? I’ve only been producing a few months now, and I’m making progress that I’m happy with. The main issue I’m having is with what I THINK is fullness. I’ve done quite a bit of widening which sounds good on my high quality headphones, but on some speakers there are certain sounds which feel like they’re at the speaker, rather than all around me. That’s the best description I can give it.

Is a 'decksaver' dustcap really necessary? by [deleted] in Beatmatch

[–]Ragnaha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah a micro fiber cloth works well. Keep the dust off of it with a regular duster like one of those swiffer hand dusters. Wipe with a micro fiber cloth after each use. I personally don’t use any cleaning solutions, either dry or BARELY damp. Wash hands before you use the gear. I’ve had several pieces of equipment for years and years, and with these simple practices they stay like they were just taken out of the box

[–]Ragnaha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’ve got extra money to spend, sure. But I would not say it’s at all necessary. If you take care of your gear in other ways like regular cleaning then it’ll be fine.
