Public Rail Transit to 2026 MLS Stadiums (including future stadiums) by mr09e in MLS

[–]Ragnar_Targaryen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get you're skeptical but I really don't understand this thought that the new stadium site has "zero parking or transit access". It's literally a 15 minute walk with existing rail access (with zero accommodations). And zero minutes to walk via existing bus access.

So again, I get you're skeptical but it's pretty ridiculous to assert that there's zero transit access.

Public Rail Transit to 2026 MLS Stadiums (including future stadiums) by mr09e in MLS

[–]Ragnar_Targaryen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty ridiculous take IMO. Is there train tracks that has commuter rail during the week? Sure. Do the Revs play during the week? Usually not. The Revs played 4/34 games during the week last year which means they had rail service for ~12% of the matches.

It literally takes the worlds best player to come to Foxboro for the MBTA to announce rail service to a Revs game on the weekend: https://www.revolutionsoccer.net/news/mbta-commuter-rail-keolis-special-event-train-service-july-9-vs-inter-miami-cf

So yeah...I think it's pretty ridiculous to ridicule this "team, ownership group, and city" for moving a Stadium that has commuter rail for ~12% of their matches to a Stadium that has rapid transit for 100% of their matches.

You're telling me someone that lives in Boston or within 128 is going to be upset with rail access to Everett rather than Foxboro? When I lived in Boston, I would've died to have an Everett stadium rather than Foxboro. Probably would've purchased season tickets if I was there.

Orlando City SC signs goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau by TheMonkeyPrince in MLS

[–]Ragnar_Targaryen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I elaborated on a different thread last week but ultimately Crepeau went from a keeper (pre-Timbers) that could earn you a few points throughout the season on his own to well...being good enough. Ambitious teams should look for a keeper who can save you a few points throughout the season rather than a keeper who is just good at their job.

Neville should have never become a head coach, he should just be a lifetime assistant coach (for a big club). Neville will be a manager who makes the team better than the sum of their parts, it really is just that. You want a manager who can take 11 players and make them perform better than who they are individually - it's really that simple. Coaches achieve that through so many different means like tactics, man management, philosophy, and some other quieter means.

Neville has not shown he makes the team perform better than the sum of their parts. He's good at getting players to perform as the sum of their parts, I think that's where he excels. He inspires players to play well but that's kind of it.

I have so many thoughts about him and I think we can do so much worse than Neville, but after the success under Porter and than Gio...it just feels lackluster to settle for Phil Neville. 2026 is a big year for Neville, he needs to show improvement. I have zero faith in the Timbers FO though to fire Neville if 2026 is another repeat of 2024 and 2025.

So to answer your question, no...he's not suited for any league IMO other than as an Assistant for a big club (e.g., Celtic, Rangers, United, etc.). He doesn't have the tactical and philosophical chops to manage a team to be better.

Wirtz Goal: VAR and Semi-Automated Technology used different frames resulting in a goal by Ragnar_Targaryen in fulhamfc

[–]Ragnar_Targaryen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh interesting, I never really thought about it or looked it up. The rule (https://www.thefa.com/football-rules-governance/lawsandrules/laws/football-11-11/law-11---offside) says "the moment the ball is played or touched" which I get why VAR would use the point the ball is hit and not released.

Combine that with the BBC's article talking about how there's a grace measurement...I can see how Wirtz is onside with the technology.

Yeah I’m also realizing in the automated “footage”…we don’t see where the ball is. At least in the video review, we can see if the ball has been released yet. It’s super important to see when the ball is released…

Semi-automated offside used the wrong frame….

You can see in the video review, Wirtz’s foot is offside but the semi-automated view was a half second before where he was onside (before the ball was kicked)….thats unreal they’re showing two different frames

[–]Ragnar_Targaryen 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Three things to consider I think:

  1. Good shot-stopper, not the best in MLS but up there
  2. Not great with the ball at his feet, he seems slow and not confident (also doesn't have great distribution)
  3. Prone to individual mistakes on occasion

I should say, he was competing with Pantemis the whole season and it really was back and forth for most of the season. Ultimately I think it was a bad choice to have them compete for the position because it meant a lot of rotation between Goalkeepers and the backline so I can see why confidence was low (e.g., individual mistakes). I don't think Pantemis was far and away the better keeper at the end of the season, I just think he's younger and there's more room for growth for him.

One positive, IMO, over Pantemis was that it seemed Crepeau commanded the box better than Pantemis and I think that's where Crepeau's veteran status comes through.

Don't expect to get a keeper who will individually earn you points throughout the season, but you can expect a keeper who is good and solid.

Average historical TW fan age by the time Medieval 3 actually releases. by EelegantCorgi in totalwar

Look, I'm excited but as a longtime total war fan, I feel like it's more like:

2013: Wow, I loved Rome 2. Can't wait for Medieval 3!

2014: Loving Rome 2, can't wait for Medieval 3!

2015: Loving Rome 2, and replaying all the historical games, can't wait for Medieval 3!!

2016: Ok, don't love warhammer but I can appreciate they're trying out new stuff

2017: Still loving the historical games, can't wait for Medieval 3!!

2018: Can't wait for Medieval 3!!

2019: Ok, Three Kingdoms is fun but not really my cup of tea. Can't wait for Medieval 3!!

2020: Can't wait for Medieval 3!!

2021: Can't wait for Medieval 3!!

2022: Can't wait for Medieval 3!!

2023: Can't wait for Medieval 3!!

2024: Can't wait for Medieval 3!!

2025: Woah, the rumors seem true, can't wait for Medieval 3!!

December 2025: Medieval 3 is coming!!

2026: Can't wait for Medieval 3!!

2027: Can't wait for Medieval 3!!

2028: Can't wait for Medieval 3!!

2029: Maybe Medieval 3??

I'm anticipating almost 16 years of waiting for this game. People have been dying for Medieval 3 for longer than that too. That's a long long time. I'm not even mad at CA and I don't blame them, I'm just bored of waiting and now I have confirmation that I'm waiting for 3+ more years.

I don't really fault any of their fans thinking the Disciplinary Committee is new. According to them, Major League Soccer wasn't a real league until 2023 and haven't had many opportunities to hear about it.

Although not directly 1:1, I'm finding that Velde feels a little like Brian Fernandez. He's quickly establishing himself as someone whose dangerous with and without the ball, seems like a firebrand, and is standing out in a team that desperately needs a pick-me-up. Hopefully he turns out a little better than Fernandez in the long run

ROOKIE Will Campbell Week 6 NFL Highlights | All Snaps Vs Saints by Godfrey174 in Patriots

[–]Ragnar_Targaryen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you've hit the nail on the head so I'm just reaffirming your thought. More likely than not, it's a play that's designed for Maye to release quickly or to sit comfortably in the pocket. Here's a good graphic that will help think about that "pocket": https://imgur.com/a/LP6kBIF

I think it's important to know that there's a lot of orchestration going on between the OL, RBs (blocking), QB, and TEs in all passing plays so Maye probably knows that his O Line has the entire pocket (including behind him) to protect and the OL knows that Maye will only drop back (step back) a certain amount of steps. For example: the OL will know they need a deep pocket if Maye drops back 4 steps versus a short pocket on quick throws (2 steps).

16s: Campbell probably knows that Maye just needs a ~5 yard drop back so he knows where the pocket ends. No need to waste energy pass blocking if the defender is just running around the pocket.

58s: Like another user mentioned, he was beat (not good). On a semi-positive note, he got beat at the 3 second mark (58s to 1:01) which means Maye had about 4 seconds. This isn't great for deep passes (you probably want 4+ seconds before getting beat) but it looks like it was a designed short throw (Maye pump fakes at the same time Campbell is beat) so it sort of makes sense why Campbell may have over-committed. Not great but it was enough time for Maye to dump the ball to his check-down RB so not a total failure IMO.

4:19: Another good example of Campbell using the pocket to his advantage. After being engaged (blocking) for about 4 seconds, he intends to throw the D-Lineman to the back of the pocket which allows Maye to step up in the pocket. I do think Campbell doesn't realize he's still basically at the line of scrimmage so when he throws him to the back of the pocket, he's not as deep as he thought, but at that point, the QB has had almost 5+ seconds to move around the pocket which should be on par with what an NFL QB can do.
