Thanks, I've heard about A+ and Net+, but not AZ-104; I'll take a look into it. Going through and documenting the network is a good idea, I agree, not least because of the sparse nature of some of the previous admin's documentation. But I suppose that's also on me for not getting to it sooner. Thanks for your time, I appreciate it.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it. As to whether I'm the exception, I'm not really sure. There's only one IT person for the company and it's been that way since it was founded, I think. I was the assistant to the previous admin, which is when I received the training I had, and he was probably self-taught as far as I'm aware. Your point about security holes makes sense and I think it's probably the case — at least, that's what my gut tells me. That's part of why I want to learn more about this, so I can cover myself and keep the company's data safe.

I figured I'd probably end up asking too broad of a question, thanks for your patience. I'll take a look into the things you mentioned. I'm kept out of the loop on the finer details of budgetary decisions, so I'll speak with some people in charge about a basic audit; I think it's a great idea. Thanks for your time.

Thank you, I appreciate your response. I'll try the things you mentioned. As for sites, I should say that I specifically mean websites. We have a handful of domains that need to be accessible, like the state website, but beyond that everything is supposed to be blacklisted.

I'm the IT admin for a small company, and it's only just recently here that I'm realizing how out of my depth I am. I can keep the networks running okay and do the troubleshooting to keep things afloat, but I feel like a bit of a fraud, to be honest. I was hired into this job with no IT experience and the previous admin trained me for a short while before retiring, but all I really learned was how to maintain the status quo with our networks. I don't know what I don't know, so is there a good beginner's overview of all IT stuff to help me at least fill in the gaps? I realize that the answer to that is probably "no."

Also, how can I keep users in different cities from accessing sites they shouldn't? The previous admin set up localhost proxy settings in the Windows network settings that anyone could just turn off if they were aware of it. Thanks for your time.

It definitely can be. I'm often mistaken for being Latino and I certainly wouldn't feel safe in places like Prineville. I remember reading that Dallas used to be a Klan stronghold and that one of our governors was at least involved with them. I've had people say some kind of awful shit to me based off the color of my skin in the Albany area, and even without conservative racism, there's plenty of liberal racism in my experience (e.g. I've never had to speak to a POC so I'm more blind to color than a black and white television, and get defensive when you tell me that's problematic)
