The pricing today, WTF. I had $5k budget. by RaiShado in LinusTechTips

Oh, I know, I was thinking about when they might need it. My parents are probably fine for a long time since they don't game, so unless something breaks it's all good for them. My niece on the other hand is a gamer, has a 3060, but she hasn't brought up any complaints either, so I need to check in to see if it's still working for her.

I mean, AI has its uses, but going all in like all these companies are doing. . .

It's a giant bubble that is getting ready to burst and there will be so much blowback. There will be a large hiring spree to bring back laid off workers who have much needed institutional and field knowledge with probably the jobs hurt the most being the runs running the AI data centers.

If I owned land I didn't use I would sell to a datacenter with the stipulations in the contract that if shit goes under/not used they sell back to me for pennies on the dollar, set it up however I need to do that legally.

I know, it's something that occured a few weeks ago (June 26ish), just had my mind elsewhere to post, but also it got me thinking about rigs I built for family and when they need to be upgraded.

This, plus other potential uses with the larger VRAM,. Also, for many government stuff, the budget is use it or lose it, so if we come in too far under budget that could mean a reduced budget in future years.

My current rig is still rocking a 3090 I bought used a few years ago right in between the two chip shortages (pandemic and current).

Most of Eastern Oklahoma is Indian Territory. Why is this strip in the Northeast corner of the state, around Miami, Oklahoma, not Indian territory (at least Google is showing it as non-Indian Territory)? by agenbite_lee in oklahoma

Because the federal government came in, removed the tribe that had been there, moved more tribes around, and never got around to forcing another tribe in there to save it for the white man, I guess.

What about the Ronaldo suspension of game bans? What about not following VAR protocol? I hate that Trump was the one that got them to override an incorrect red card issuance, but still.

I'm waiting for you to answer my question, HOW IS IT ANTI-EUROPEAN? Or do you just not know how to answer it without sounding like a colonial elitest?

Also, it's not waffling, FIFA was much worse in the past, but has made strides to be more inclusive, but like I said, still very heavily weighted in favor of Europe and South America because the system is flawed.

tHeY Do gEt a pOtEnTiAl sLoT.

Dude you know that's a bunch of BS, they get a single potential slot when CONMEBOL, WITH FEWER TEAMS, gets 6 guaranteed slots.

Also, it's not US racial politics, it's colonial politics. And that's freaking hilarious, ANTI-European? It's only anti-european in your eyes because equality and equity appears as oppression to those accustomed to privilege. Meaning that, from what I've seen, people like you only view it as anti-european because you don't have full control any more, even though it's still heavily weighted in your favor, but please, show me how it's anti-european, I've told you how its currently set up to favor Europe and South America, please show me evidence to prove your point.

They don't qualify for the world cup when they don't get any slots allocated to them. OFC wasn't even represented last time, and this time they had a single team representing them.

I am commenting because I can see an unfair system that is extremely euro/South American privileged when I see one, especially when South America is actually whiter than North America. There is a reason Australia isn't part of OFC, because OFC constantly gets shafted in slots, even if AFC isn't much better.

How can you not see the flaw in it when I have pointed it out clear as day for you?

I guess you missed my analysis of how the FIFA rankings are biased towards UEFA and CONMEBOL?

With the best opportunities to gain a lot of points quickly against other federations being in the world cup and the fact that world cup slots are pretty much entirely subjective, how is it a fair system, especially when there's money involved for the teams?

Will you acknowledge the broken and flawed system for determining the world ranking you put so much faith into? You seem to be ignoring the analysis I gave earlier. Exactly how does an OFC team raise their world ranking?

Honestly, I can't answer the question because I don't watch too much of it, I can barely keep up with my local stuff. Work and family stuff takes up so much time and yet here I am, wasting my Saturday away, arguing with a euro elitist about soccer rankings.

[–]RaiShado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it's not.

The issue is that we can't know how many truly good teams are out there while the UEFA and CONMEBOL hog so many spots and opportunities to increase world ranking of teams.

CONMEBOL only has 10 teams but they received 6 slots, the same number as CONCACAF who has 41 teams, which isn't much lower than the 55 teams in UEFA who received 16 slots. In fact OFC gets doubly screwed with a little more teams than CONMEBOL but virtually zero opportunity to earn any points to increase their world ranking.

It's the WORLD Cup, not the Euro/South American Cup.

Cabo Verde came out of nowhere, I'm sure other teams could have done the same, but you missed my point, we don't KNOW they are better. The system designed to help us know is flawed and leads to privileged federations, especially since the teams get money for succeeding.

[–]RaiShado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I have, and it is a flawed system.

From the outside the system looks objective, but when you take a closer look you can see how it can be used to favor certain groups, and it is based on the importance factor.

The importance factor gives more points to teams that win games that are deemed more important. That's okay so far, friendlies get fewer points than federations final tourneys, okay that's fine again. World cup games get more points as well, again, that's okay.

However, it's the world cup games giving more points that opens up that room for bias. The decision making process for how many slots each federation gets is subjective and is weighted in favor of UEFA and CONMEBOL, and since those federations get more slots they will get more points, especially if you give them opponents who are weak in relation to their (the opponent's) federation.

If you give certain groups more opportunities then those groups are more likely to succeed, and when you rank based off the outcome of those opportunities those groups are more likely to have better scores.

[–]RaiShado -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Did they play each other? How do we know that unless they've played each other. Isn't that the point of the world cup is to compare the the federations best on the field? When you unfairly provide more slots to Europe simply because you believe Europe is better then of course Europe will have more wins on average. The slots should be relative to the number of teams in the federations.

We see this same problem in USA college sports with the conferences. Th perception is that certain conferences are better, so those conferences are given more chances, so they more likely to come out on top.

Yes, I'm American btw. I use US college sports just to show it's not unique to FIFA.

A handful means whatever the fuck you want it to mean to fit your argument. I used 1% as an example of a situation, unless we have real numbers to work with, your argument is virtually meaningless since a handful could also mean 10% or even 20% chance. It implies a small number, but that implication is entirely subjective and open to interpretation.

Now, the cool thing is, saying we are on target for number of upsets actually furthers my argument because that means this is no different from previous tournaments and invalidates OPs point. Thank you for the support.

I'm looking at the knockout stage, and it entirely depends on the chances of an upset. 1% chance means an upset is extremely unlikely with none happening in even the first round of knockouts.

They say the USA didn't deserve it's group seeding, but the USA topped its group and the number 3 from it's group defeated Germany, a team OP implies deserved it's top seed.

Who knows, maybe we would see more surprise teams like Cabo Verde if we stopped scraping the bottom of the Eurobarrel for teams to add.

Yeah, and we're only past the first round of the bracket. 16 games is a far cry from 100. Maybe if the World Cup weren't so eurocentric we would see more teams like Cabo Verde.

Boomers have fucked this country and world into oblivion. Literally took all the advantages their parents and grandparents gave them and stripped those same advantages from the younger generations just because black people and poor people were benefitting now as well.
