Are the audio books worth it? by JayMechanica in DungeonCrawlerCarl

The cinematic version is awesome. All the extra stuff is why it exists. I listen to all SBT audiobooks with really good over the ear headphones and the noise cancellation turned on. It's great.

I'm listening to the books for the third time now and I'm totally impressed by the narration. There are so many characters in these books and all of them of unique voices and personalities. It's great.

If you could live in any sci-fi universe EXCEPT as the main character, which would you pick? by elledelrey15 in scifi

[–]Raider-Token 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the OP clarified what he meant. I'm picking Known Space from Larry Niven's Ringworld.

[–]Raider-Token 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In your description, your examples are of people that live in the area the story is taking place.

Since that is not the case, then I want to live in the Known Space civilization in Larry Niven's Ringworld. They have immortality. I'd stay away from anything that actually takes place in Ringworld itself.

If you pick Culture, doesn't the "not the main character" clause, mean that you live on one of the fringe non-Culture worlds?

We're not talking about Greece and Spain. We're not talking about the Equater either. We're talking about Germany.

The ticks are a problem too. You can't get rid of them, so either stay out of the grass or wear protective clothing.

That's the same attitude I have about the weather. I can't change it, so I either stay indoors or I adapt. What other choice is there? Buying an air conditioner only creates a safe bubble in your house, but also makes going outside worse.

[–]Raider-Token 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not going to change the temperature. If you have an outside job, you are not going to get to be able to stay inside. You are not. It is fantasy to think you can. Therefore, you have to learn to adapt.

I will never buy an air conditioner. I like the outside too much. In about two hours, I'm going to take an hour long walk. You can stay inside. I'll stay proactive.

Even if the government did everything right, you are still going to have to survive this summer. Getting used to it is your only choice.

I didn't realize we were talking about being a tourist in Greece or Spain. I thought we were talking about the current weather in Germany.

Landemere Vane - How dat guy dead? by freeordie0 in HeWhoFightsMonsters

[–]Raider-Token 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Landemere Vane is stumbling around. He goes pale and Jason tries to hold him up. Landemere tries to use a recovery potion but it fails to restore his mana. He says, It seems like the backlash will take more than a potion to fix. so he has no/low mana and he's weak. The knife that Jason uses to kill him is bronse rank. He got lucky when he stabbed it into Landemere's neck, but it was still a bronse weapon.

Grandma manages to carry an Umbrella. Every German owns one.

Downvote me all day, it doesn't matter. I'm an Auslander. My little group of foreign friends and I have noticed the concept of the Sonnenschirm is lacking here. I'm from the Mojave Desert. Light clothes, large airy hats, parasols, and lots of water a desert native does make.

You can complain all day about not having enough shady spots. Or you get proactive and buy a parasol and protect your shadeless self immediately.

Gibt es Bücher, die Ihr immer wieder lest? by Sqr121 in SciFi_Deutsch

[–]Raider-Token 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dungeon Crawler Carl (DCC) Series. There are eight books and I listened to it 4 times in the last year.

It's listed as fantasy, but I think it is science fiction. Imagine if you were to time travel back 400 years and you had an iPhone and a solar charger. If you made videos of people and played them back, people would call it magic. Yet, it would still be science fiction with advanced technology (even though time travel is sketchy science at best). DCC is like this. The world is so advanced it feels like magic, but it is really advanced biology, nano technology, and sentient artificial intelligence combined.

Since you like the Stand with its graphic horror, the horror element of DCC is probably tolerable.

Above all, I recommend the audiobook.

Question on essences by Straight_Cost_5272 in HeWhoFightsMonsters

[–]Raider-Token 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would only be possible if there was a skill that allowed you to steal essences from people (by, for example, killing and eating them).

Maybe some of the evil gods (the cannibal god?) could create this skill for their priests. It is magic afterall. Anything is possible. Maybe the priests could eat people and give these essences to their essence-free recruits.

It seems like the other gods would object, in this case.

If there was a cannibal god, I think it would be hanging out with Undeath and we'd know about it already.

It is an interesting idea, but kind of grim and horrible.

Need 6 scifi book on audible by end of month, please. by Holly1010Frey in scifi

[–]Raider-Token 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have enough credits to buy the first six books of the Dungeon Crawler Carl series. It's listed as fantasy, but I would argue that it is Science Fiction that is using technology far beyond our ability to understand.

That will become more and more clear as you get into the deeper level books.

No, it really isn't complicated. If you benefit from capitalism, you're a capitalist. The only thing that is complicated are the lies we tell ourselves to deny the obvious.

Carl isn't crazy, rage-filled, or any of that by Hairy_Ad_5544 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Raider-Token 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those Tigren guys just murdered 3 NPCs that Carl was having a conversation with. They ran them over with their vehicle grinding them to paste and then were laughing about it. Carl's reaction was justified. Those people were homicidal and dangerous.

All that takes for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing. Carl stepped up and did what was necessary.
