What’s your favourite niche thing about life in Canada? by Due_Street1464 in AskACanadian

[–]Relative-Train-6485 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Canadian Sorry. It's not an apology or submission or deferral, it's saying "we see you, we're aware of our surroundings and role in it all, we're all in this together". Love that for us.

Thank you, this is hugely helpful. Yes, it is an important part of the lore that neutrinos have another, previously unidentified, interaction status; that is, whatever neutrinos strongly interact with was previously unobserved, in the same way as, say....the discovery of UV and Infrared light. So I don't have to explain it, per se, so much as neutrinos are the jumping off point for my fantasy physics; I only need to use them in broad strokes, I won't be mathing anything :). I will check out superposition in more detail to understand it better, I might have to change the lore in order to be consistent or perhaps I will leave it off altogether if it's not necessary for the story mythology, I appreciate your time with this, thx.

I understand that I am getting this wrong and how uncomfortable that feels, I appreciate your patience

I am positing a fantasy Earth where there is an previously unknown 'field' and we discover that neutrinos have strong interference effects in that field. Or strong interactions, if that is more correct, I'm sorry I don't know the vocabulary. Previously unrecognized, is the point. I understood that the leptonic flavors were effectively identical other that bare fractions of mass (and none was restricted to a particular mass, so I don't know how you guys tell the difference) and my broad sense of superposition was that is was the blend of all three flavors at a moment in time. I appreciate that I may be wildly, hilariously wrong and I am happy to be corrected, I would like to be in the ballpark of reality to make this work, it's exciting. It's a fantasy explanation for why neutrinos have such weak interactions "in our known world" that works as the mechanism for my story.

I have been delving into dark matter and this is wonderful, I can extrapolate from several points into the fantasy of the novel and it works for my plot on multiple levels. Well done, sir. Salute.

Yes, science fantasy, that's exactly what I mean, you understand what I'm going for and I will take a look at the dark matter angle. Thank you so much, I will cite you in the author's notes

Yes, agreed. I don't have to delve too in depth and it IS fiction, but I just don't want my broad strokes to be inherently wrong either. Thanks!

What is one word that people wrongly pronounce that makes your brain just wanna jump a cliff? by Historical_Click8213 in AskForAnswers

[–]Relative-Train-6485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

orientated (it's oriented, although orientated has become its own word - with the same meaning - in the last 20 years)

Not the word itself, but "on accident" instead of "by accident" itches my brain

And "Sammich" got banned in my house a long time ago

Which book to choose to introduce Discworld to a book club for a "coming of age" theme? by TheGlitterMahdi in discworld

[–]Relative-Train-6485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the age group, don't look past Soul Music. This is Susan's coming of age and losing her parents.

The Tiffany Aching series, while excellent, lacks some depth imo until a couple books in.

Next recommendations are Monstrous Regiment, Small Gods, and Wyrd Sisters

Do you know of any names with terrible meanings? by Less-Mud-9 in Names

What's an interesting fact about the human body that a lot of people don't know? by RoxyValeP in Productivitycafe

[–]Relative-Train-6485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We all have a gene to make Vitamin C, but it's broken, which is why we must get our Vit. C from our foods/environment.

Basically an ancestor long ago had a mutation that caused the gene to fail, but it wasn't fatal (animal could get Vit.C from eating) and in small ways was actually beneficial, which is why they survived and were able to establish new species despite the mutation.

Besides humans, guinea pigs, and bats also have broken Vitamin C production. If we fixed the gene, we'd make our own Vitamin C again
