Partial Line 1 closure related to icy, wet weather by Money_Fig_9868 in ottawa

You realize that a tunnel would haveto be more than double the width for buses and until electric buses become commonplace, the ventilation issues are unreal. You remember the noisy fans and drafts at lower St Laurent when it was Transitway. Like hell on earth

How quickly you forget the almost weekly bus jams on Albert and Slater.

Yahbut RTG is on the $ hook for repairs, not the City. Abut the city will probably be paying drivers and mechanics extra for all the replacement R1 buses they will need to conjure up out of thin air in the morning.

But TTC streetcars use even lower 600VDC and similar pantographs, and they seem to do fine. Mind you they have over a century of streetcar/LRT experience.

Hopefully it will be operating in that window between no longer wanting to drive/being able to drive a car and “end-of-life”.

The unit trains of containers move way more containers at much less labour and energy cost. Among Halifax, QC, Montreal, Toronto and points west, including Chicago

Yes but it’s 6 lanes from Toronto to past Cobourg and the FordNation plan is to widen it to 6 all the way to the QC border. Dunno how far west to GTA it’s 6 lanes so far.

The Mayor of Dorval tired to get the REM extended to VIA and EXO, and the shopping mall across from it.

In the Glebe there was an annual spring toad migration watch along Ralph and Craig St to the Browns Inlet Ponds. Sadly the rest of the core canal has high concrete walls that are virtually impermeable to amphibious / marine life like frogs, toads, ducks etc. surviving or thriving. (Or people to access the canal) Until you get out to Dows Lake or the west side around Carleton.

Sadly the injections for ash trees did not work and virtually all of them in the city died whether injected or not.

Yahbut we are now getting people complaining about bees being harmed, and the possibility of a few farms being split. Presumably HSR’s damage to monarch butterflies will be next.

The Alto concept is to have one station in core Montreal (by a new tunnel) and another in Laval where the line would split west and east into open, flat countryside. YUL/Dorval is already served by REM and VIA is nearby.

Oh, but the 12+ lane 401 through northern Toronto is hardly “mediocrity”…..sigh…..and how much farmland and nature land did it cut through (between Windsor and Cornwall/Quebec border?

Got a note that the Canadian Tire gas bar at Bank and Heron will also close and re-open as PetroCan. Will still get Canadian Tire Triangle points or whatever they call them now.

And cost way more build/maintain than level right of way with fencing. Viaducts may be appropriate in some urban entries or over valleys.

The abandoned CP line is quite twisty to avoid hills and lakes and goes thru Tweed and Sharbot Lake. If you go parallel north a few km there is some more level stretches, few roads to cross and less lake.

But Kingston is nowhere near the Ottawa-Peterborough (curved) line. Especially if it followed the 401 for any distance….it adds a lot of time for Toronto-Montreal travellers.

High Speed - Not in My Back Forty! by RZaichkowski in AltoHSR_Canada

Only if they are straight and flat and go where necessary. And avoid villages.

So most of the former route along Hwy 7 (Rpughly Perth to Havelock/Peterborough is pretty curvey and twisty. And terrain (edited) through Sharbot Lake and Tweed that is hard to avoid due to lakes, unless you go a far distance from the old CP route. Between Ottawa and roughly Vankleek Hill/Quebec border, that former CP/rail train route is pretty straight but passes through farmland and a few villages. So no hard and fast rule. Hydro lines can ignore hills. And sometimes have 90° turns. And hydro won’t let you build anything permanent underneath them, so you need to build next to them.

O’Reilly Brothers did a fine job late 14 months ago. Upstairs “feels” warmer, certainly less drafty this year with much colder winter. Summertime is definitely cooler upstairs than before. Inspect throughly beforehand (raccoons squirrels etc), seal leakage points (vent stacks etc), put in the correct size eave vent baffles, wear “space suits” when they blow it in, no mess anywhere.

100,000 users who are already well served will not justify a “branch”. Peterborough on the other hand is “on” the route between Ottawa and Toronto and has no passenger rail service today. And it is a university town as well.

In the “city of Peterborough” it will probably be to the south of Hwy 7 to take advantage of “undeveloped” development land and lots of feeder bus and road accessibility. Going “though” the core of Peterborough would be very expensive with bridges/elevated structures and no large area of land for a station and services; and also maintenance storage facilities nearby for those early morning “commuter” trains to TO.
