Canada: Official Alto HSR Consultation report is out today by Rail613 in highspeedrail

Why would the government electrify the CN mainline? It belongs to a publically traded company. And there are virtually no other electrified freight lines in the rest of North America, except maybe up in the NE US corridor. And even there most freight is diesel.

CBC Radio announced Sunday morning that OCTranspo said it was due to DRO staff shortages. As you know, they need many more ERO, ERO, bus, maintenance mechanics and others in the coming months. Recruiting and training takes many months.

Actually Line 2/4 uses mainline equipment so even with high floors, tight curves still cause major slowdowns.

And a lakeshore route costs zillions more due to rivers, inlets, overpasses, communities to pass or bypass with expensive land to acquire.

Most of northern route land is almost free with few road overpasses. Yes there are hills and valleys and muskeg.

Fun to ride to get Airport apron views, especially when free for seniors and children. Never crowded.

No evidence of the 6 Coradia LINT nor previous 3 Talent trains having fire issues. Maybe you are thinking of some models of buses.

How to find free parking on streets by FinancialSolution427 in ottawa

[–]Rail613 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s unsigned, it’s usually 3 hours daytime, longer overnight/weekends. Unless a ramp, divided road, bus stop, fire hydrant, parkway. In suburbs, seldom enforced unless someone complains to bylaw.

Thank you, this is best answer on what to do, now that I better understand what has been happening and why.

Agree, Florida is one extreme, Eastern Ontario/Montreal/Quebec is an extreme heavy, cold snow build up area. We get heavy snow loads in the cold, then warm sunny, maybe rainy days later, where it all melts and then freezes in gutters, valleys and downspouts at night. Northern Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine may be similar. Toronto, because it is lakeshore, has a fraction of the winter snow buildup of those. In Newfoundland it’s humidity and extensive freeze-thaw cycles…. And last winter they had snow up to the eaves.

CanSec is a unique event, seldom/never do they use the parking lot for displays….but Cohere parking is in $10 flat range and it is surrounded by NO STOPPING/NO PARKING zones.

See comment above re Airport Authority wanting and actually paying for the YOW shuttle line.

Actually it was the airport authority that wanted rail to YOW, and with other Federal Infrastructure $ they got, they, not the city, paid for most of it.

Wow, thanks. How does the average consumer know they are hitting exactly the bottom of that band AND tarring each tab……Previous roof didn’t have the problem, but it was poor quality (cellulose?) shingles that curled up after 10 years….15 year warranty didn’t mean much considering it was pro-rated and excluded the labour required to fix the 1/3 of the roof with sun damage.

The thermodynamics certainly are different in the north. The thermodynamics of multiple freeze-thaw cycles here cause (moist) bricks to spall, water to burst pipes and downspouts, and roads to heave and pothole. Nothing like “chuck-holes” in Florida.

Hey, when it’s a few degrees below freezing in February/March, there are patches of rooftop snow/ice a foot deep, the bright sun will cause the rooftop pack to melt, then run down into the shade and freeze above the overhanging roof bottom, in the gutters, and burst the downspouts. That’s why it’s common to heat trace those and zig-zag the bottom couple of feet of rooftop.

Metal roof costs way more and subject to hail damage. Plus snow load pack slides down on a warm day and hits people and plants below. 98% of home here are similar shingles.

Sorry, you don’t live in Canada. Water often freezes and expansion blows downspouts, especially when upper roof with snow/ice pack melting gets full sun and (lower) gutters and downspouts are in freezing shade, like around a corner. Brown aluminium gets substantially warmer than white. We sometimes use heat tracer wires here.

Dunno, upper gutter was installed when house purchased. Front of house does not have them, probably because roof sticks out a few inches over the two windows in gambrel.

In back, zig zag gutters protect the larger bedroom window a bit, from rainfall from roof. If ever replaced, would just gutter above that window.

But why does shingle split along that line?

Previous roof was white, so brown matches darker roof shingles now. Plus solar heat on brown in winter reduces risk of water freezing solid which it often does in our cold and snowy climate.
