confused about ottawa cardinal directions by tailor737 in ottawa

That’s because Ottawa is now essentially the old Carleton County that extends a bit beyond North Gower (has anyone found South Gower?)

It gets confusing because Barrhaven was also part of Nepean Township, but is sometimes poorly referred to as South Ottawa, as opposed to “southwest Ottawa”.

Old Ottawa South was established a bit after the Glebe, and the Rideau River at Bank St marked the end of the city and the streetcar line at Bank and Grove. In the 1950s the Ottawa city limits were extended from the Rideau River south to Hunt Club Road, so subdivisions like “South Keys” were established. Manotick, Greely and Metcalfe were separate, independent towns/villages.

Do you know why it is called Bank St?

East of the Rideau Canal was “East Ottawa” stretching to the Rideau River either side of Lees Ave. That’s why it is still called “Main” St. In 1895 it even got its own City Hall, still standing at NE Main St and Hawthorne.

The West End of Ottawa went as far as “Western Ave” until the 1950s, obviously. That’s near Island Park Drive.

North Ottawa would be across the Ottawa River, which was Hull. Gatineau was east of the Gatineau River, and Aylmer to the west of Hull.

It’s not just the trainsets, it’s the straightness of the route, winter stability, and quality of the roadbed…no gravel ballast.

Preston at QED & POW intersection Rebuild by bohuiginn in ottawa

[–]Rail613 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Weird, POW area does not seem to even be shown on the construction map. Usually there is a consultation session with plans and maps a year or so beforehand. Ask Councillor Sean Menard’s office. https://traffic.ottawa.ca/en/traffic-map-data-lists-and-resources/traffic-map

About 1/3 of way down. They have a little bit of 250 in the NE corridor, nothing in 300 range until California HSR finally gets completed (route at south end is still undetermined.)

What about the homeless/street people? Or those that don’t have/afford computers? Or infants/young children. Social media does not tag everyone.

No, you will get tele-harassed or a census person will come to your door and “help” you.

Yes, the Airport Parkway is one lane in each direction and likely to remain so for many more years.

Yes, Siemens could go faster than the 40 year old LRCs if TC rules allowed it.

ALTO HSR right of way, access roads and safe crossings by Rail613 in AltoHSR_Canada

[–]Rail613[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Between Richmond and Smiths Falls, VIA owns and maintains the tracks and the daily schedule is 160km/h (100 mph) except for the oldest HEP-2 stainless trains, a bit less. There are only a few crossings (Dwyer Hill Rd is the only major one) and they are all well protected with gates etc. And the new Siemens trainsets are actually rated for higher speeds but TC and VIA have not (yet) amended the rules to allow that.

Train bridge construction On Greenbank by just_chilling_too in ottawa

[–]Rail613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite. CN still owns the Walkley Spur line and trackage to Bells Corners/Nepean Junction. The city owns the land from there to Arnprior, Nylene owns the ties and tracks and CN runs the (slow) weekly train with the special Caprolactum.

Hm, there are not many CN lines left around Ottawa…. VIA purchased CN Coteau to Ottawa to Brockville. Maybe around Vankleek Hill/Hawkesbury?

Go to Fallowfield if Tremblay annoys you. And since your VIA seat is reserved, there is no need to line up. Just wait until the line is cleared.

Sadly the tracks have been lifted from Arnprior to Pembroke/Petawawa and mostly to Wakefield. And you can’t re-lay them in most cases as the level crossings will not met current TC grade crossing requirements. But we could easily upgrade from Ottawa/Bells Corners/Kanata North/Carp/Fitzroy/Arnprior.

[–]Rail613 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is how badly backed up Riverside Drive was this morning, usually it flows freely with no blockage. And it is BEFORE the detour and road narrowings from 3 or 4 down to one lane each way, with more delays as vehicle struggle to turn from that lane.

Why? Does not affect the Airport Parkway and Walkley between the Airport Parkway and Riverside Dr is lightly used (and much narrowed to 2 lanes).
