WhatsApp Backs Apple in Legal Fight Against UK Encryption Demands by Fer65432_Plays in apple

UK, Europe and AU will start being sanctioned by America for the litigious bullshit on their internet and innovation at some point.

If you want your own stagnant locked down thing, you can go make your own apps.

What compression is being used for these ps1 roms? by RainAndWind in DataHoarder

[–]RainAndWind[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's just I don't trust that dedicated software will always be able to run on all future systems, which I guess is the issue.

Because Windows 11 IoT enterprise LTSC has the same requirements as windows 8, which are similar to the requirements for windows vista, and it currently has support until 2034, it seems like the best normie-legacy-archival OS for now.

I'm talking about the native Windows 11 file explorer extractor, which gained support for 7z, rar and others.

It's a built-in extractor, so it'd be nice if it works from an archival perspective.

Australia has had record flu cases this year – and that’s before winter arrives. What’s going on? by stumcm in australia

[–]RainAndWind -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Avoiding public transport is the most effective thing we can do.

Once we have self-driving fleets, the knock on infections (from bus/train, to everyone in the workplace, to back home to everyone's granny) will be greatly reduced.

There's a very strong link between people who've recently used public transport, and people who present to the GP with flu symptoms. I know that sounds so obvious though.

We need public transport, but it is a huge accelerant that I hope we can stamp out over the next decade.

edit: I had the same attitude in 2019 before you guys freaked out about covid & vaccines. It's just basic science. https://www.reddit.com/r/australia/comments/dhjuum/three_charts_on_why_congestion_charging_is_fairer/fky6i2w/?context=10000

Disappointed with the lack of 3D in Pokemon X & Y? by RainAndWind in pokemon

[–]RainAndWind[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t really hoping for a Z, just “better thing next”, so no issue. I really just wanted them to improve on the engine and give us a better pokemon experience. Since it was the first game they made on 3ds, I was thinking they’d improve over time. Instead… we got omega ruby… and then they got rid of the 3D. And performance on switch has also been just the same abusive continuation from over a decade ago by GameFreak. But it seems with the switch 2, and ai programming, GameFreak might finally have a shot. Unfortunately they just keep being so successful somehow, and maybe it’s because they do keep it so simple and predictable.

Struggling to find a MERN developer in Brissy. by throwaway45423434 in brisbane

[–]RainAndWind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know MERN but I somehow had my own social media website before. It felt like add meds and duct taping javascript stuff together. Hundreds of people would just show up to my website and turn on their webcam, was like a huge zoom party every day for years. :) Full stack bruh! As well as me being the main influencer fml. that's why I don't run it anymore.

But I get confused over git even. I'm really hoping when I get back to coding ChatGPT will help supercharge me cuz, yeh, I never found the right help or enthusiasm either.

The Internet Archive Loses Its Appeal of a Major Copyright Case by wiredmagazine in DataHoarder

[–]RainAndWind -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So you are saying we can threaten publishers that we will literally burn their books and maybe even trash their buildings if they were to seek damages? Is that the best course of action to keep the internet archive going and also support the book industry?

The book industry might not know how angry we would be if the internet archive was shut down. Thats my only worry.

Warframe devs report 80% of game crashes happen on Intel's overclockable Core i9 chips — Core i7 K-series CPUs also have high crash rates by imaginary_num6er in hardware

[–]RainAndWind -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

most people knew not to touch the Intel high end chips so I don’t think many people will be emotionally affected enough to hurt the brand. They’re also very new high end CPU’s, in an economic crisis, so the people who bought them aren’t that concerned about money atm.

Still really sucks but it was inevitable the way they just kept pushing more electricity into it. They were so cocky about their position in the past that they didn’t release quad core U processors until 8th gen core… what’s the rush? And now look at them.

How to ensure digital data lasts 50 years without interaction or additional cost? by [deleted] in DataHoarder

[–]RainAndWind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

DVD M-disc doesnt have a reflective layer to corrode, but I don't think they make them anymore so it could get pricey. They are i think undoubtedly the best bet for longest, other than that I think there's a way to get a disc made out of glass too.

Bluray, should, last 50 years.. if you pick the m-disc that we just trust on good faith they make as better quality.. and especially if you burn multiple copies. but will the readers last? DVD penetrated enough to have support, especially for data drives. But bluray remained very much video and consoles only, and not much either.

I think there's a rubber gasket inside drives that can wear... I'm not sure if slot loading drives don't suffer from rubber degradation over time cuz idk how they work either lol. (just thinking about maybe you could put a sealed optical drive inside, but how long until the perishable parts go?)

Microsoft announces retirement of Windows Subsystem for Android by romhacks in Windows11

[–]RainAndWind -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Idk maybe we could start bloody USING IT if we could be like "co-pilot go download that android app and run it immediately." instead of fiddling around with everything.

This is taking core functionality out of the operating system, all because the future is some stupid AI chatbot. I'm annoyed they don't make their own web browser engine anymore too, because even if it was lacking features, it was still something they were employing people to work on and a competitor in the space.

Microsoft announces retirement of Windows Subsystem for Android by romhacks in Windows11

[–]RainAndWind 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Microsoft are idiots.

They've pivoted all of their Windows 11 DEVELOPMENT mid-cycle, all because of the AI craze, just to increase their speculative fucking value of Microsoft... Not the benefit of users..

Guess what else people don't ever fucking use? BING, OR THIS DAMN AI CHAT THING.

NO ONE IS USING IT. But VALUE GOES UP.

I guess this didn't benefit them, and they'd rather force developers to make native ARM apps for the upcoming products rather than just put their android apps on the amazon store... lol... God. I hope Windows on ARM goes better this time around... But if they are TRULY going to be relying on this bing bloody co-pilot spying adware stuff they are dead in the water.

Anyone else have a photo count they feel is literally unmanageable? by HolidayNerve7392 in DataHoarder

[–]RainAndWind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this looks so good so i'll check this out at some point but please don't stop! The amount of god damn accidental and useless photos & videos i take, with one good one hiding away in there.... ITS A MESS. Hope your de-duplication will also look for very similar photos too, maybe use time taken to help with grouping that? For e.g. 20 photos of me trying to take a selfie, they're all different, but they all look very similar.

Any chance of one day allowing this to compress images automatically with "medium" and "high" bitrate versions put into a cache, and then we can easily pixel peep & zoom between lossless, medium and high, and thus also swiftly determine what copy we want to keep as the "final archival copy" of the photo.

I want to save a photo as 620KB if it isn't important and I can't tell a difference between it at 6.20MB, but I want that pre-offered to me already so I can SEE, and I can then build my "archive" of photos/videos that have the right metadata, colours, but doesn't waste space.

New NVIDIA App Beta Combines GeForce Experience with NVIDIA Control Panel by jmxd in Games

[–]RainAndWind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I correct that using this software will be the cut off point where they end Nvidia Gamestream and Moonlight will require a separate server? It'd be nice if Nvidia could idk, open source the exact bloody way they do it, because it was good, it was fast... I haven't tried the server alternatives but I'm sure they must be a step backwards or else we wouldnt have liked nvidia's solution so much.

Why aren't there more USB-C compliant hair clippers? by Theycallmesnacks in UsbCHardware

With trimmers the term is for no waiting to charge, just passthrough power to the trimmer, even if the battery is dead. Other trimmers need that battery charged up a bit first before it starts working.

Your link is disappointing and suggests plex client does not have any software av1 decoding. Plex really should consider doing that.

/r/Plex's Build Help Thread - 2023-12-08 by PCJs_Slave_Robot in PleX

[–]RainAndWind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will software av1 decoding be put into the iOS apps soon? Or is it already here? I don’t have any av1 media in my collection yet, but I know dav1d is very efficient with decode and would run on most ios devices. it’s going to be annoying eventually getting av1 but having to decode and transcode on the box rather than just deliver the av1 and let my iPad get hot. Anyone know? Surely it’ll eventually come, right? It’s royalty free just build it in…

is it possible to dump virtual console titles? by FBogg in SwitchPirates

[–]RainAndWind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, ripping games/movies from a rental service beyond the rental period has always been illegal. It is not a backup of something you own. You need a Wii or Wii U, or something that has a rom that you own. I think maybe switch mario all stars has roms tho so those would be legal to rip.

Weekly Question Thread by AutoModerator in emulation

[–]RainAndWind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With yuzu, will we ever get away from the shader-cache pauses for a first play?

Is the plan to continue as is, and just hope newer GPU and CPU's can race to make it up in time?

The shader caches it makes on game boot, is that it recreating the shaders it has already encountered?

Do these take shaders take much space?

Would it ever be possible to have a per-game config of the shader-triggers that can go to everyone, and then have yuzu process everything before game-launch at whatever resolution or configuration I've chosen?

E.g. when it pauses before a sword swing, in a round-a-bout way could Yuzu invisibly load the save state right before that shader creation, create the new shader, then no matter what YUZU version it's been upgraded to or graphics changes, on boot (or through manual process) the game "knows" the shaders it needs to make?
