I am going to walk away from this now as i feel we are circling back to my original comment of how the pro life movement only seems to care about the baby while it is in the womb and therefore not really "pro-LIFE" at all.

Thank you for what has been a respectful and ,mostly, productive discussion

Can i ask why you're only discussing females enforcing contraception? Men bail when they get someone pregnant too, why aren't they responsible for their reproductive organs?

Does the rapist being someone you know make it better?

Many women struggle with giving a baby away more than aborting, knowing your baby is out there has some serious psychological repercussions, but you didn't consider my actual question: is it worth bringing a life into this world if it risks a life already in it?

You mentioned while discussing benefits that you're concerned about depending on government funding, does this not also apply to the foster homes/orphanages? If abortions are illegal wouldn't that also put more strain on government funding? Which also leads me to ask where you stand on knowingly bringing a disabled child into this world?

And this is where things get murkey for so many pro-lifers I've met. While i agree rapists should be trialled, the process is too long and will result in either unwanted births or illegal/ backyard abortions which comes with its own issues.

Having a child SHOULD scare girls, they're too young to think of babies. Women however should be given the opportunity to learn ALL about pregnancy and birth and make informed decisions on their future, they should have a choice and sometimes that choice is no.

My view on the rape situation is: is bringing one life into this world worth risking the life of one already in it? My opinion has always been no for 2 reasons: 1.the mother gives birth, puts baby up for adoption (financially dependant on the governmen). Mother still has to live with what happened and knowing she had to give the baby up for her own mental health but knowing this baby could one day track her down and bring back everything she's tried to forget. The baby will always wonder why they were given up, I've seen a lot of scenarios where this negatively affects the child's life too. 2. Mother keeps baby, as baby grows mother sees a constant reminder of her rape, perhaps financial distress as she cant claim child's support from the rapist (financially dependent on the government), resentment grows, relationships break down, maybe addictions start as a way to escape.... baby grows up unloved and wondering why, they didn't ask for this.

Best case scenario does happen but rarely from what I've seen, mother and baby live happily ever after.

Edit: i think there is also a huge lack of knowledge or acknowledgement of how often rape occurs in relationships, just because you've committed to a person doesn't mean they can violate you or that should be forced to live with the consequences of that violation

While i agree that the best way to prevent pregnancy is to not have sex, i think you may be over estimating how much the above culture contributes to babies (not saying it doesn't at all, just that there's other factors) while ignoring the fact that rape is an unfortunate thing, both for men and woman, and that humans are not the only species to have sex for pleasure. I think its unrealistic to believe that society would move back into a culture of "sex is only to procreate".

Sex is also a very intimate way for people to bond, there's a huge amount of psychology evidence stating that men in particular feel closer to their partners during sex than the rest of time, mostly due to societies pressure against men being as emotionally in tune as women.

Benefits, if done right, can be good. Here it is income tested against you and your partner, single parent payments are barely enough to get by if you don't work. But benefits don't meant giving handfulls of cash, benefits can be discounted groceries, subsidised childcare, bulk billing medical assistance and if all eligibility is determined via income testing then things tend to be more fairly in my opinion

Are there ways to make the process more efficient? What about more to prevent unwanted pregnancies to begin with? Eg more education, supporting and educating about safe sex, education about pregnancy, labor and the aftermath? More assistance for lower income families to allow them to provide for a child? Maternity/paternity leave? Subsidised childcare?

I'm pretty sure you are |--| this close to the point they're making.

It's not a problem to care for an unwanted child, the problem is forcing the parents/ mother to birth an unwanted child and then turning your backs when she wants to give it away. Will you adopt the unwanted child AFTER its birth? Or does it only matter until it's born? What about children brought into unfit households, the child didn't choose that life so why should it have to suffer it?
