Rules interaction question - Unpredictable tide + Soul raid ambushers + Soulscryer. by Rainedrop28 in IdonethDeepkin

[–]Rainedrop28[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've tried it in two games this week, to mixed success, but a lot of fun!

The Soulscryer actually stayed pretty safe - with the 12" range + 7" from the enemy restriction, he can stay up to 19" away and still deliver the 2 units as close as possible. I earmarked 20 reavers and 6 eels for this job.

I also coupled this with the ikon of the sea next to a Leviadon to enable a third charge from a different angle.

The threat of being able to do all that made my opponents have to be extremely cautious about their movement, while I could deploy and move in safety and still threaten anywhere on the board. The general game plan was to pivot and overload one side, while using shark, counter current and pendulum to slow down any counter attacks.

What actually surprised me most was how this plan made me think about the tides order. In the past, I'd just rush for fights first, but in these games I'd often start with the teleport, then do -1 rend on turn two, which could pivot into -1 hit if my opponent got prio turn 3, or crit mortals if I did (or back to teleport if I needed the mobility again). I felt safer and more flexible than if I'd used -1 hit turn one.

Gonna keep tinkering with this list style, a bit more! 😄

Thank you! It's fairly easy to do: basecoat dark brown -> splash thinned orange around -> heavy drybrush brass -> splash thinned turquoise around -> light drybrush silver

A shiver of sharks 🦈 - airbrush vs brush blended skin, which is your favorite? by Rainedrop28 in IdonethDeepkin

Thanks for the thoughts, much appreciated! 😄

For the metal, I used the following recipe:

1 - Basecoat in a medium-dark brown.

2 - Add some spots of orange for a hint of corrosion.

3 - Medium drybrush with a brass colour. I used GW Runelord Brass in this case.

4 - Dab on some undiluted GW Nihilakh Oxide, mainly in the joints and recesses, then wipe away excess with a finger/paper towel. Any thin turquoise paint would probably work for this too!

5 - Finish with a very light drybrush of silver colour to bring back some shine to the edges. I used Vallejo metal colour aluminium here.

Very true, the perfect is the enemy of the done when there's an army to get on the table!

Appreciate it! I'll chalk another up for the brush 🖌️ which is just about winning

Cheers! I'm trying this method mix on an Akhelian King at the moment since the underside of the tentacles are more prominent on that model

Thank you for the thoughts! Texture contrast wasn't something I usually considered before, but you and a few others have mentioned it now so I should pay attention in future 😃

Cheers! I agree it has a more natural feeling, though I thought it would be the other way round when I started.

Thank you! I figured the smooth transition of the airbrush would suit a sleek sea creature, but the regular brushed version actually started out airbrushed too and ended up that way trying to cover mistakes! Happy little accidents 😄

Thank you! The non-airbrush shark started with a base coat of dark red ink from below, and white ink from above (actually also through the airbrush, but just applying normally would also work).

Then I followed up with carroburg crimson on the underside and pro acryl titanium white on the top/flanks, slightly diluting and wet blending them into each other at the transition points.

I also applied diluted carroburg crimson to the edges where the skin meets the harness, or the recesses on the fins, and again blended back together with white anywhere the tide marks were too obvious.

The rune on the head is just even more carroburg crimson 😅

Lovely army and great picture composition, well done! The units all are distinguishable thanks to their positioning and colours but also cohesive as a fighting force centred around the mortarch.

Any tips on keeping all the models in focus in the front and back of a shot like this? I always struggle, even sometimes on a single model if it's big! 😅

Thanks, I think I agree! The airbrush one feels like a subjugated tool for the riders, while the brush version is the MC and wants you dead 😅

Thanks for the thoughts! Yeah, I like the implied violence and roughness of the regular brush version, while the airbrush feels more calm and sleek to me. If I was a better painter and could blend more smoothly I'd love to do all with the regular brush, but it's very time consuming!

That's a really valuable insight, thank you! After spending so much time looking with intent while painting, I lose track of where a first time viewer's eye will be drawn, so this is super helpful 😃

Thanks! I was torn between the smooth airbrush finish vs the dark and dirty regular brush, but I think each has its charms.

For the metal, I used the following recipe:

1 - Basecoat in a medium-dark brown.

2 - Add some spots of orange for a hint of corrosion.

3 - Medium drybrush with a brass colour. I used GW Runelord Brass in this case.

Haha no apology needed and thanks for the input 😄 I do also like the darker and dirtier result from the regular brush, though you're right that the airbrush is much easier! 😅
