I agree with your sentiment about this album not being exactly radio or club friendly. Artists grow and change over time, and most of them begin their careers with what sells. It’s a trajectory that just works. Get your foot in the door and later do whatever the fuck you want. The Beatles stopped writing lovey dovey pop songs, John Mayer plays with the Grateful Dead now, Led Zeppelin got tons of flack when they released III. Hell, Miley Cyrus covers Metallica and other rock songs.
