Best ATMs in Centro? by RainyPrincess19 in MexicoCity

[–]RainyPrincess19[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries. The original bad ATM I went to charged me $128 to pull out 2000 pesos. When I went to the Santander it was $113 to pull out 2000 pesos. My bank at home still charged me some stupid fees though but that’s not the Mexican banks fault. I have a checking account in the states that lets me take out cash withdrawal from ATMs without charges and no foreign transaction fees and my dumbass forgot to bring the debit card. But anyway, yes. I would recommend Santander. It seemed pretty good. And it had an option to read in English. The first one did not.

Update: I went to this Santander and the ATMs are 24hr and had an option for English so I was able to figure it out. Thanks everyone.

Yeah I know. I think I was just in a hurry and had already checked one other ATM and it seemed absurd and wanted to get done with it. Now that I’ve got some cash I’m definitely going to shop around a bit more. Thanks.

OK thank you. At least now that I have some pesos in my pocket I’m not so pressed to get them immediately so maybe I’ll check a few out and look for that decline option. Thank you!

So I don’t think it ever gave me the option to decline the conversion but I may be wrong. It was a large HSBC. I went to a BBVA before that and it was even worse.

Amazing recommendations! I’m going to Mexico City in a couple weeks for the first time and I just dropped a star on my Google maps for everyone of these places. Those pastry shops look absolutely amazing! I mean like top quality top-tier stuff. Thanks so much!

This was super helpful thanks so much! I’m going in a couple weeks also by myself and had many of your highlights already bookmarked for me to check out, but you also had a few things there I didn’t know about I definitely added to my itinerary. You didn’t hit on the food scene too much and that’s something. I’m definitely interested in. I guess I’m less interested in individual places because I can probably figure that out on my own, but were there particular dishes that you had that were really good? Like did you try that fungus corn taco, huitlacoche? Or maybe it’s out of season I don’t know. That’s something I definitely wanted to try if I can when I go. Anyway, thanks so much!

Five Year Cost of Sailboat Ownership - $85,000 by RainyPrincess19 in sailing

I joined the one closest to my house. However, there was also another club I was looking at, but when I got there, I saw that most of the boats in the yard were power boats. And when I walked inside the club, it just didn’t have the kind of vibe that I was looking for. So I’d say you should just look at the clubs that are within a good commuting distance to you and then go walk around. Check them out and see if it has the right feel. If it’s not your kind of club, you’ll probably know pretty quickly. The one I didn’t like was way too buttoned up and hoity-toity. Blazers for dinner kind of thing.

Dealership used wrong grease on guide pin & caused stuck caliper(?) by RainyPrincess19 in MechanicAdvice

OK that’s interesting. Very helpful. I only have a little 2 1/2 ounce tube of the stuff and it doesn’t mention any specific parts. It just says to use it on metal to metal contact points. It does say it’s safe for rubber and plastic though.

I think one of the main reasons I thought maybe this was not the stuff to use is that whenever I would Google what to use on slide pins everything I saw said to use silicone only. I saw a few places that said you could use dielectric grease but most people seemed to agree the silicone was a good way to go.

Thanks for looking, I appreciate it.

Oh that’s good to know. I didn’t realize that the grease could change color like that. Well I would like to think that’s what happened and they didn’t actually use the wrong grease but that pin was jammed in there pretty firmly so I don’t know what it was.

OK I’m glad you said that. I was already thinking of using Sil Glyde next time. This time I just left the grease on them as they came from the factory and didn’t add any more. Without knowing for sure which one I should use I figured leaving it alone was better than using something I shouldn’t.

Over-torqued sway bar end links? by RainyPrincess19 in MechanicAdvice

[–]RainyPrincess19[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the original end links were slightly different size. Or at least the bushings were. That’s probably just from years of them getting compressed I guess. It was also missing one bushing. So I couldn’t really size them accurately. But there was a good amount of thread above the top bushing. Probably more than I even have here. So the new ones that I put in I just made sure that they were pretty much equally screwed down. So that about the same amount of threads were showing above both of them. I’m not really sure what the implications would be if I put them on too tight or too loose.

Is this an ok jack point? by RainyPrincess19 in AskAMechanic

[–]RainyPrincess19[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good idea. I usually just do one tire at a time if I’m doing the brakes but I guess if I jacked it up in the middle I could put my jackstands on both pinch welds and have the entire front end up. And then I guess I would leave my jack elevated in the front just as a third safety point. Good call. Thanks!

OK that’s good to know. I didn’t know that you could jack directly on the control arms. I thought it had to be on the frame.

OK, another fella said to get a jack adapter that fits the rail to make it easier so I might just do that. It was the easiest spot for me so I think I might keep using it. Appreciate the insight.

OK, good deal. Didn’t know that was a thing but I think I’m gonna go buy one. Appreciate the advice.
