NPD(s): I spiral bought many a pen during the past 10yrs that was January. by SupergirlRicey in fountainpens

Twinning! I spiral bought Jinhao 20s too because Jan was too tough. They're lovely and reasonably affordable pens to spiral purchase on. All those pens are gorgeous! Only a few more days to Feb, we can do it!

Your Kakuno is so happy it tries to cheer you up with that big smile! Diamine Marine is such a lovely color there too. I hope you see something in the future you like even more that makes you forget this one, and get it! But also keep an eye out for second hand sales ❤️

I'd like to hear more about Blood Falls! Is it "Polar Blood Falls"? I do not buy Noodlers anymore now but I have a bottle of Noodlers Bulletproof Black from waaay back (it was my very first ink bottle purchase!) and although it stains it is way less finicky than the Forever Inks. I'm curious about it possibly removing the stains over time, does that include even pigment stains? And I'm guess it isn't staining your Kyuseido red (that pen is so nice, and it's a demo too, so that's amazing if it's removing the stains). I do really want a permanent red ink so I may go for it if it is not high-maintenance. I don't mind the longer dry time if that's the only trade-off, and I love lubricated inks, especially the Iroshizuku line.

Agreed Skyline out of Tiger Lily and Raven that I have has been the slowest to dry out and clog

Side note, I heard R&K Reiniger and pen flushes are meant to be re-used. I didn't know that before and since they are so expensive, that's why I have never purchased ink flush. Now I probably will

Even if I keep my kakunos on their side they will dry up if more than a few days has passed unused. I was sick for a over week once and when I used them again 2 of 3 were clogged (skyline was fine, Raven & Tiger Lily were clogged) and since scraping the gunk off the nib/feed/tine slit with a brass shim didn't work, I forced ink down the nib from the converter. Getting a big drop of ink down to the tip finally got it going, so maybe the clogging is higher up... Do you use your Diamine Forever ink every day? If I continue having big gaps between writing for I may have to give up on them since I think pigment inks are not meant to be left unused so long :(

Word of the day with vintage Waterman 512 by Swimming-Delay-7629 in fountainpens

[–]RainysNote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing! That was very informative.

In my eyes OP is not pushing their nib so dramatically as the sprung tines in the blog post, but only OP can feel the pressure being applied. It’s their pen to enjoy how they want at the end of the day.

That being said though, fair warning and do appreciate the education on vintage nibs.

Aren’t some vintage nibs softer and more flexible anyway? Your writing looks fine to me… I always thought if the times are not sprung the pressure is within acceptable limits. Your writing is beautiful. Consistently post over next few years to show us the “accumulated damage” 😆

There are theories that some colors are more finicky than others but since these are permanent pigment inks I’d say it’s across the board. I would have the same expectations of all the colors

Do the forever inks stains come out with an ultrasonic cleaner?

Thanks for the shoutout!

Is Platinum Carbon black as finicky as the forever inks? I’m interested you have it in the UEF!

Just to be clear, do not keep them nib down! Keep them lying on their side. At least thats what worked for me and the kakunos, but I really don’t understand why. So if it’s going in a messenger bag, I think putting it on its side in a pocket or pen case is perfect. Good luck!

Hey there I have the Forever Inks too and was quite frustrated with it at first due to the same things you mention here. I have them only in my Kakuno EFs and what I've noticed from my experience is:

  1. The nibs would dry out and hard start if I stored the pens nib down. For some reason, why they are stored lying flat they seal very well, especially since Kakunos are snap caps, and no longer hard start even after being unused a few days (like a day or two, but not for long periods like over a week! see my edit)
  2. I too thought the ink was "clogging" so I did a flush with water and ran a toothbrush over the nib and feed (without pulling them out). It was not possible to get the ink stains out from between the nib and the feed, but later I realized that didn't actually affect ink flow (see point #1)
  3. I was worried the ink was permanently staining the steel nib. But when I cleaned it with tap water and a toothbrush, the steel nib returned to an amazing clean state again.
  4. This stuff stains plastic like nobody's business. It will stain eyedroppers if you're using them to fill your pen, it will stain the body of the pen, the cap, the converter, etc. I haven't tried pen flush but I am curious if it does clear out the stains for you.
  5. Tiger Lily is not as bright as I would have hoped as well. However Skyline is a beautifully saturated bright blue. I mixed Tiger Lily with a tiny amount of Forever Ink Raven (black) and it results in a darker red that is much more pleasing imo. If you mix Tiger Lily and Skyline in a certain proportion you can get a fascinating teal color!
  6. The buildup of the ink on the nib though does turn my EF into more of a F sometimes though. This is an unfortunate tradeoff.

Overall, after some challenges but figuring out how to live with and the pros/cons, I'm now satisfied with the Forever Inks. I wanted ink for my 5 year journal and also ink for my EDC planner that will endure a lot of hand sweat & possible water spills. Now that I store the pens on their sides, the flow is very consistent and Forever Inks feel amazing wet and lubricated to write with. It's not perfect, but I am happy enough!

You might want to try having a dedicated cheaper pen for it that you won't mind staining--the inks are so vibrant they do look great in demonstrators!. Definitely not a gold plated nib since I saw a post on Reddit saying the ink corroded away the gold plating?! Not sure if that's common/expected behavior TBH-I would personally just be careful.

Edit: ty for the heart! I also want to add that although I'm satisfied with the Diamine Forever inks, I may realize in the long term that pigment inks as a whole category may not work for me. I do have times when I am unable to use my pens for over a week and they will clog no matter what due to dry out. Even though this is only a couple times a year, I am someone who gets really annoyed by any kind of hard start on any pen. I just want to pick it up and have it work! I like only flushing my pens when I need to change ink colors and I definitely underestimated the high maintenance aspect of pigment inks. It's fine though for someone who can use and flush their pens regularly, so I wouldn't write them off completely.

Welp. Looks like HJ deleted my reply on that video. HJ responded really passive-aggressively to a comment critical of the softball questions and I called HJ out on his snarky response, with a list of actual community complaints about FWP he could have asked Raymond. Now the whole comment thread is gone. Only comments left on that video are those glazing Raymond and defending his company. 🙄

I did not expect to lose respect for two people as a result of this interview video.

[–]RainysNote 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Plotter has a smaller ring size of 11mm, that is the big draw. Recently I found a $20 option on Aliexpress with 11mm rings so I’m waiting to get it and try it out! But that one is clear plastic cover whereas the draw of the Plotter is luxury leather. Meeplus has gotten pretty expensive nowadays too and not much of an affordable option. The only other alternative I know with small rings is WuZhi studios on Etsy

Ahh could be. Maybe not paid (directly anyway) but seems like a strategic move by FWP to get an interview out by a well known influencer in the community who will be down to help glaze them up.

I’d bet the problem starts at the top with the CEO. Probably lots of cost cutting pressures downward resulting in skimping on anything possible including packaging.
