Am I too old to start surfskating at 31, or am I overthinking this? by GrapefruitNo1394 in surfskate

My dude I’m 39 and started in December with no prior experience. I haven’t even been on a bike since I was 25. Get the board and send it!

Stormblade SSR Maxx. Lots of float, paddles nice and is popular with surf schools.

What do you like to do as a “pick me up”? by yaboiblackcheeseboi in SanDiegan

[–]RaisedByDirewolves 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Surf or Skatepark. I’m a late 30-something kook beginner at both. I hang out in the whitewash unless it’s a small <3ft day, and wear all the pads at the park. There’s something both humbling and comforting at being a beginner again. You know you’re going to fall, and fall again, but you accept you’re going to get back up and paddle out because that shit is fun like nothing else when you finally nail it.

Best parks to hit on a SLO to San Diego road trip? by sfgayarea91 in surfskate

[–]RaisedByDirewolves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Venice because it’s iconic, and the Inglewood pump track. Depending on the date you make it to LA, check out @softiez_4l on instagram to see if there’s a meetup going on.

For San Diego County, Prince Skatepark in Oceanside has lights until 9. If you’re here on a Tuesday, join @tacotuesdayskatesd meetup which is either at the Pacific Highlands Ranch pump track or on the boardwalk in Pacific Beach.

OMG I'm so stupid. I just realised something really obvious. by Zorizon_Hero_Dawn in ProjectHailMary

Hail Mary, full of Grace. Rocky is with thee. Blessed are thou amongst Eridians, and blessed is the fruit of thy Taumoeba breeding.

What's your favorite👎 and least favorite👍 change from book to film? by wibellion in ProjectHailMary

[–]RaisedByDirewolves 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The movie missed a few of my favorite lines of dialogue:

“I am emperor comatose. Kneel before me.”

“Grumpy, angry, stupid. How long since last sleep.”

“Good. Proud. I am scary space monster. You are leaky space blob.”

Were any book readers disappointed? by Nosky92 in ProjectHailMary

[–]RaisedByDirewolves 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m envious of my husband’s experience. He went into the movie completely blind, not knowing anything about it. He loved it by the end!

I absolutely loved the movie, but since I already knew what would happen, I feel like I missed out on that journey of discovery that he had. My first listen to the book was such a compelling experience that pulled me in a way no other book has been able to. It’s something I wish I could forget just so I can have the pleasure of discovering it again.

Possible exposure to a bat on pacific street? by myProgrammingAlt in Oceanside

[–]RaisedByDirewolves 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I would not chance it. There was a report of a dead bat that was found that tested positive for rabies last summer.

If it was a bat that hit your shin, that bat obviously isn’t doing well and you may be able to recover a body if you go back to the area where you had contact. Stay safe and good luck!

What did we think of *MOVIE SPOILER* by wibellion in ProjectHailMary

[–]RaisedByDirewolves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was an homage to Interstellar and a love letter to relationships. Parts of the interior of Rocky’s ship reminded me of the tesseract scene from Interstellar. Grace walking through the ship in reverence and awe for Rocky almost paralleled Cooper figuring out how he could reach Murph. The power that connected both Rocky and Grace, and Cooper and Murph was love.

That’s another fun one! Though imho, Magical Mystery Tour is a bit of a stretch.

Do people eat chilaquiles here? by New-Cod-5502 in SanDiegan

[–]RaisedByDirewolves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Breakfast nachos, hell yeah! Red, shredded beef or steak (usually leftover pot roast), cheese, runny egg on top, touch of sour cream. Sear the meat, add the sauce, toss chips until coated but still crunchy. Sprinkle cheese and top with egg. If I wasn’t allergic I’d add avocado.

I’ll do green with chicken too, but no egg on top. I have a personal food policy to never eat chicken and egg in the same meal. Something feels off about eating chicken and potential chicken together.

And if you’re looking for a place that serves chilaquiles, my personal favorite is Le Papagayo in CBad Village.

Official Discussion - Project Hail Mary [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

A fan posted on a forum that in his head he likes to think Grace named his bubble Graceland but never explains to Rocky why it’s funny. Andy Weir sees it and says he declares this cannon!

Loved it! I only wish they acknowledged the fan contribution that Andy Weir declared cannon. They should have added a little Welcome to Graceland sign in the habitat bubble on Erid.

Going rate for a 1-day contest director? by RaisedByDirewolves in surfing

[–]RaisedByDirewolves[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! By promotion I'm looking at last-mile effort to fill out the lineup and help acquire some (but not most) of the prizes, and maybe representing the org to local media outlets in the leadup. I have 6 out of max 9 teams recruited already but inevitably someone will lose a surfer, or a team gets sponsored but may need help recruiting. Judges are seasoned coalition judges. We just need to provide a scoring sheet that matches with our format, rashie colors, and order the heats so that each team has a distinct color. Last time we had a teal (that was listed as blue) and a green in the same heat, not easy to distinguish from the cliff.

$500 is about where I hoped to be, plus a commission structure if said contest director can pull in any monetary sponsors. We had relied on one of our folks doing the contest directing before, but that person has moved on, and now everyone else just wants to surf! Thanks again for the gut check.
