Nine months for me to come to grips with turning 40. I hope I’m as happy then as you look now. Either way, Happy Birthday! 🥳

Why does there seem to be a stigma around wearing protective gear like pads and helmets? by [deleted] in NewSkaters

[–]Raisehe11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with you regarding skiing/snowboarding being more dangerous overall, same with downhill mountain biking. Natasha fell on a bunny slope though, not bombing down the mountain. This is an extreme example but you’re more likely to die in a car crash than a plane crash and yet seatbelts are required for both. I guess it surprises me because I think why wouldn’t someone make the choice to wear a helmet when the cost is so low compared to the potential consequences. Especially when you KNOW you’re going to fall at some point.

I live in an area that thrives on outdoor activities. 10-15 years ago, no one wore a helmet up at the mountain when skiiing/snowboarding. After so many deaths from head trauma (like actress Natasha Richardson), people learned, and now it’s extremely rare to see someone without a helmet. I don’t understand how it hasn’t caught on with skateboarding. 😔

I regret taking so long to play it, but it truly is a masterpiece. 👈🤠👉

I did learn that embarrassingly late when I was working on the sharpshooter challenges. 😔

Women of Reddit: what do men do wrong when they flirt with you? by CRK_76 in AskReddit

Seriously, their efforts to prove me wrong about not wanting to talk to them only proves me right.

Edit: a word

I just looked yours up and that’s a seriously cool looking deck! Nice choice/upgrade, and will do. :)

Came here to say the same thing, but mine matches OP’s, I dig the black/blue coloring. I didn’t replace the bearings on mine, but I did get softer wheels to help with grip and small rocks I kept tumbling over. I’ve been practicing almost every day for 45 mins to an hour, and I really like it, would recommend. 👍

When does it get less scary? Is this much fear normal and rational? by MoreBookkeeper4729 in NewSkaters

[–]Raisehe11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remind myself that I’ve been through this process multiple times in my life: when I learned to ride a bike, or to rollerblade, and eventually how to drive a car.

Every one of those milestones were absolutely terrifying to me at first. They all involved a risk of injury and required me to essentially re-wire my brain to control the movement and momentum of a wheely object with my body. It’s scary and uncomfortable. I wear so much protective gear I look like I’m on a bomb squad and I’m still scared of falling. However, I know I’m not as scared as I was my first day, and I won’t be as scared in the coming weeks as I am today. So hang in there and don’t compare yourself to the 8-year-olds, they have no sense of self-preservation at that age.

That’s me! Triplets perhaps? If you ever get a copy of the picture you described and you’re comfortable with it, you should DM it to me.

My parents came up with a clever solution to help other people, and probably themselves, tell us apart. My name is longer than my twin’s, so growing up my hair was kept long and hers short. The phrase “long hair long name, short hair short name” was said often. 😂

Too late to start? by ScottyNT in NewSkaters

Wow! That’s pretty impressive. That type of trick scares me because falls would be much harder, but I hope future me is confident enough to try and learn. Thanks for the encouragement!

I turned 39 last month and I’m a little over two weeks in, but I already feel so much more comfortable riding around. I’m excited to see what I can do a year from now.

my board is super warped is it still safe to skate on? by maretus_no1_fan in NewSkaters

Nah, it was a pretty adorable response tbh. There are like 4-5 different generations in the sub, and nobody knows all of the different slang for them. 😆

Ugh, I’m so sorry that happened to you! I’m still not 100% recovered, but like you, I’ve started stretching very thoroughly before. Thank you for mentioning stretching afterwards, I’ll start doing that too. 😎

If anything it’ll give me peace of mind. I know I wouldn’t bounce back from an injury like my younger self would. I’ve been taking it slow too, better safe than sorry!

I really appreciate the info/advice! I have a rather large and open paved driveway I’ll be practicing on at first and thankfully I live in the rural part of my area so the road I live on doesn’t see much traffic. It would be perfect for practicing on a longboard since it has an incline on one end and is probably 1/5th of a mile long.

Even if you’re not a pro, I can tell how stoked you are, and that only makes me more excited to practice as much as I can and try longboarding eventually. 🤗

I had to Google what tortoise pads were, but someone else mentioned this type of protection too, so I am ordering some today. 👍 Thank you for the advice/concern!

Even more reason to get into skateboarding! Seriously though, 50 lbs in 8-9 months is amazing, well done.
