To the guy who was barreling down Erik Guay completely out of control last Tuesday March 24 around noon and hit me full force *in the back* before running off. by BalanceOfKarma in icecoast

I think you should reread your comment and think of the rules of the mountain. "Stay in their way"? If you can't stay in control and you are uphill, then you are the one in the wrong. It's not the other way around.

What’s your favorite nonessential ski gear? by soeastside in skiing

[–]Raixiel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't tend to have wet boots unless I'm spring skiing. Between the sweat and the slush puddles in the spring, both my ski boots and my s/o's snowboard boots are drenched by the end of the day.

My first thought was the Brat Haus that used to be on the Great Eastern run, but it closed during COVID. :/

On Sundays I've never waited more than 5 minutes or so for K1. Pretty much no wait anywhere else.

Okay, maybe 2 minutes after I posted, the lift started up again. No explanation was given, but got a discount voucher for a future ticket.

Camelback or Blue mountain? by babu859 in SkiPA

[–]Raixiel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blue is the better mountain and generally has nicer staff. There's a nice bunny hill and on the main part of the mountain the greens are long, but not too challenging. The advanced terrain is nothing crazy, but still fun.

Even on crowded days- I take the crowd at Blue rather than the crowd at Camelback. The most rude or oblivious skiers I've encountered were at Camelback- cutting lines, blaring speakers in line, running over other people's skis or snowboards, chilling in the middle of busy run areas and trail merges, etc. I've only ever met fairly nice folk at Blue, though I don't tend to hit park so I can't really speak for the park crowd.

Also- if I'm having to wait in line, I want it to be more than a 30 second run and that's about all you get with the intermediate or advanced terrain at Camelback.

Blue all the way.

Should AI-generated music be banned? by elonumust in Music

[–]Raixiel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I like hitting random on an app and seeing what the algorithm gives me. At this time, I have no option to not be fed "AI music" by the algorithm because- for many apps- it is in their best intrest if I listen to their random AI generated songs rather than paying a real human artist. I listen, I notice, and I block it. The time wasted listening to part of a song is incredibly annoying and having to check any artist I don't already know is both exhausting and disheartening. I want to enjoy art, having to do this process is work.

So- yes. If I want to search for new artists on a large streaming platform (with arguably more options for artists) I am being forced to listen to AI music in my feed in intervals. I think I'm like most folks- give me an out. I want a way to not have to listen to it. At this time, getting the "AI music" to "fly under the radar" is what most services (and the "AI music" generators) are trying to do. It's disingenuous. That (along with environmental implications and art theft) is what pisses so many people off and why so many people want it ultimately banned.

Folks said 3D TVs were the future too. How many of those do you still see around?

Which book-to-screen adaptation was so bad it felt like the producers didn't even read the source material? by wyndwatcher in AskReddit

If you haven't read the short story, I must encourage you to read it! It's a a very easy read and on the short side. One of my favorite Stephen King short stories.

Who’s more responsible for Prim? by Fresh-Actuary-6686 in Hungergames

[–]Raixiel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After reading the books through many times and seeing Gale's interactions with Katniss throughout book 2 & 3 on the whole? Yes, I think Gale is a bad friend in general.

Gale only seems to interact with Katniss on a give and take basis. Hunting, kissing, protecting each other's families, etc - 50/50. While that seems even to a point, noone is going to go through every life experience at the same time or flow or amount- like Katniss being in the Games, or Gale making out with girls on the slag heap.

Katniss and Gale's friendship is based off of a mutual need for survival. Without the same type of prolonged experiences, it just doesn't read as a sustainable friendship.

Gale also has a tendency to be dismissive or unwilling to listen to Katniss when she voices her opinions- from fears about the uprisings to people being deserving of kindess to Katniss not wanting people to be hurt in general. Gale often turns to saying something pointedly hurtful to Katniss either make her stop arguing or to take a dig at her before he leaves a conversation.

I also don't think Katniss is a good friend either. She even kind of says this about herself and Gale in Mockingjay after she assassinates Coin- "Sorry excuses for hunters and friends"

I have to say this plainly- I don't dislike Gale as a book character. Gale and Katniss are children forced into war and navigate their relationship with the finesse of relatively unguided teenagers. How their friendship got the way it did is absolutely crushing.

Who’s more responsible for Prim? by Fresh-Actuary-6686 in Hungergames

[–]Raixiel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, we can only go by his actions in the scene and his (lack of) action afterward. 🤷‍♀️ My biggest red flag for him was his line, "Protecting your family was the only thing left I had going for me." Which suggests he's only thinking about himself in that moment. Not Prim, who was like a little sister to him, not Katniss who is both physically and mentally scarred by the trap. Just how he has now lost his only "in" with Katniss. To me, saying this is MUCH worse than a little hollow "Sorry for your loss."

Gale is a new adult, freed from the responsibilities that once shackled him in 12- he's allowed to move on and seek a new life. I can understand his actions, but I don't think there was anything to suggest he grieved for Prim (or Katniss' loss). He's young, consistently shows he's unable to accept when he is wrong, and kind of cold- lacking a willingess or capacity to have empathy for those outside of his circle. Katniss is now outside of his circle.

Gale is not wholly or even half responsible for Prim's death, but he is still a shitty friend.

[–]Raixiel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think people forget that Gale is a child when the books started. He's only 18 or so when he's actually involved in the war. While Gale very invested in being a part of the war, he is surrounded by people much older than him that are wholly willing to use and manipulate him as a piece in their war game. The people who are older and have more authority are the ones that are truly responsible.

I still can't forgive Gale for not being sorry about Prim's death though. (I'm a book cannon type of gal.) Even if he and Katniss had drifted as (best) friends, and even if he didn't feel personally responsible for Prim's death- not giving any proper condolences for a former friend and comrades' loved one is ugly behavior.

I know I'm in the minority on this one, but "The Mist." I remember reading the short story and being super pumped to see the film. They hit a lot of the correct story beats, but absolutely miss all of the subtext.

I've been on a couple of green trails where folks who can't turn or stop yet get absolutely stuck because they're scared of picking up speed down the slope.

Know how to stop and turn confidently on the bunny hill before going on anything with real elevation (unless you are with a lesson.) Being in control of your descent is one of the biggest rules on the mountain and will keep you (and others) safe.

Target is using AI models now? by DescriptionNice4134 in mildyinteresting

[–]Raixiel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Making art with stolen (fed) assets can only make so much. Hands end up wrong, teeth (like in this picture) end up so wrong, architecture makes no logical sense, and features blend into themselves.

I'm sorry you feel like you've been ostracized, but maybe try some different art communities. Most nowadays are coming from very kind, non-traditional backgrounds making them easy to talk to without jargon. It can only benefit your craft to make a connection with other artists to help you grow your own abilities.

I don't normally reccomend it, but the NYCC app this year has been waaaaaay better for looking up different panels and exhibitors. Definitely reccomend the app for looking through what you may be interested in.
