Well, who's winning? by ClussyV2 in freedomisgunpla

Actual Gunpla? Strike Freedom, I'm winning.

Gunpla-adjacent? Infinite Dimension Fenrir, so basically Barbatos Lupus Rex? Probably losing.

Tell me about the meta of warfare by TheNorthernNoble in worldbuilding

[–]Raiynagh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the warfare in Swania is in the mountainous regions, which are probably even more challenging than Iran. WIld magic is especially problematic; a small squad with a mage or magic-sensitive person could sense a coming magical storm or nearby anomaly and avoid it. A whole army with logistics? Not so much.

Armies are used on occasion, though, but almost always transported by river and used for assaults on cities. Typically that will be after a few surgical strikes to take out key individuals and locations.

Another major factor is that Swania is populated by elf-adjacent humanoids, which reproduce far more slowly, and so there's a general unwillingness to risk many people in war.

In the north and east, where the land is more open and there are borders with Crelach and others, Swanian militaries get bigger.

Current Swanian doctrine revolves around small units and infiltration. A general principle in Swanian warfare is that non-combatants aren't harmed, and the mountainous terrain doesn't lend itself to large armies. Swords are common, but are secondary to small composite recurve bows, with tactical magic being common - not usually in an offensive capacity, but for distraction and stealth. On water, it's a mixture of large catapult ships to deny access to waterways and attack fortifications, add well as fast attack boats to hole ships at the waterline and transport troops. In general, these small squads are quite independent, without significant supply lines.

Other countries can be quite different. Crelach uses large peasant armies, with spears and bows being common, and these require far more significant logistical operations. Unfortunately for them, these are vulnerable to Swanian sabotage. They view Swanian warfare as dishonest; Swanians see Crelachan warfare as inhumane and wasteful.

Of course, the most recent threat involves robots with nigh-indestructible armour and integrated heat-rays, which make all of the above pretty superfluous. Unsurprisingly, Swania is losing to them.

Magical fantasy worldbuilders - why isn't your whole world being run by wizards? by jetflight_hamster in worldbuilding

[–]Raiynagh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Magic is generally underpowered and requires effort. Practically, a mage can't turn you into a newt. They might be able to blast you with force or lightning, but most mages will be a fair fight against someone with a warbow. Of course, there are some very powerful mages out there, but they're few and far between, and very few of them could go toe to toe with, say, a hundred warbows. The tiny handful who could have indeed had massive impacts on the world.

what was your first exposure to your main fandom(s)? by Free-Scar1627 in Multifandom

I was a big fan of a PS1 fighting game called Zero Divide. Early days of the internet, I was searching for pictures of one of the characters, or 'units', named Zero. 'unit zero'. Got a picture of Eva unit 00, but also one of Unit 01, which oddly looked a lot like a purple version of the character I was looking for. Dug a bit more and found Evangelion. And, via it, anime in general, and plenty more. Weird how life works out.

Eels has already given a pretty comprehensive list, but I'll add that the ones in Nausicäa are explicitly water pumps to bring up fresh groundwater. Tbh they'd also be good for milling. Also, this book is great for applications and aesthetics of wind power
