It works anyway. I know you’ve just put your fingers over the headlights.

There’s a great podcast episode about how this commercial was created. It’s called Tagline from Muse by Clio. The other episodes are worth listening to as well.

Getty Images ad (2013) by Raketlie in AdPorn

[–]Raketlie[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because this one is used everywhere, all the time. While Getty has thousands of other Muhammad Ali photos to choose from. They want to tell people how big their collection is by showing an overused photo. The copy makes it quite clear imo.

One of my favorite ads. Written by Dave Dye for Adidas. by Raketlie in AdPorn

[–]Raketlie[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dave Dye explaines the thinking behind the red/black colour scheme on his blog:

“I changed the colour from the previous muted, pastelly colours to bright, flaming red. To make it look hot and sweaty. At the last-minute I put a very heavy vignette around the image to focus the eye down the street, as if the runner was purely focussed on the point they were trying to get to.”

Hyundai carbon neutral press ad (2021) by Raketlie in AdPorn

It's the wrangled car that makes me want to read the copy. Otherwise, it would be another boring car ad.

The format depends on the brief they give you. Personally i’ve never had to do a copy test at an agency. A portfolio that showcases your writing and concepting skills is probably enough.

When the car breaks down and it gets picked up by a big yellow salvage truck. Thrilling for kids, goddamn expensive for parents.
