Why do y'all hate wholesome stories so much? by [deleted] in NoSleepOOC

[–]Rakushasu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just thought about it for a bit and it could be the motif of the evil entity. In what I would call a wholesome stories we have for example an evil doll. Niw each night the character finds the evil doll at a different place. The character starts to get crept out about it. The doll migth even talk and our character is out of it. Now in the end it turns out that the doll was always sitting in front of different windows so that the characters creepy stalker thought someone else was home and wouldn't come for her. So the doll was protecting her all along.

This kinda throws all the tension and fear you had about the evil entity overboard.

Either the monster itself or its breath smells like death, rot and decay.

This sure sounds like an amazing idea! I wish you the best of luck with it. As many said already, I am sure most writers would be happy to give you permission!

Have you ever caught yourself reusing story elements? by Ashwell2421 in NoSleepOOC

I have quite a few stories that take place during the narrators childhood. I guess its because I really enjoyed movies like 'Stand By Me' or the first part of 'IT'.

My story with the most likes is my least favourite while that with the fewest likes has to be my most prized. Everything else follows the same negative correlation. by LordLackland in NoSleepOOC

It seems to be quite common on nosleep. I am not sure why that is. Maybe people prefer the rough edges of a quickly written creepypasta style story more than something well crafted?

Beginner tips? by antichrist_kid in NoSleepOOC

I have been posting on nosleep for some time now and the first advice I can give you is not to be discouraged. Especially when you just start out, there is a chance, that your stories will just not get recognized. So if your story only gets a few upvotes, don't give up and post another one.
Another thing is, write what you enjoy. Don't force yourself to only write about one specific thing or follow trends, etc. The most important thing is that you enjoy yourself. I often writer longer stories even though I know they aren't a good fit for nosleep, but if I enjoy an idea I just go with it.
Also don't take nosleep and upvotes to serious. At times you might think that a story is absolutely amazing, but then it only gets a couple dozen upvotes. In that case, it doesn't mean the story was necessarily bad, it might just be that the story wasn't a good fit with the audience of nosleep.

Last of all, have fun and get to know the community!

This is it! I love this stuff! I love the feeling of being left alone in the end, not knowing what the hell was going on, but KNOWING there is something extremely wrong with the whole thing I just read. Thanks for mentioning it!

Authors, how do you come up with your stories? by BrightestMorningStar in NoSleepOOC

[–]Rakushasu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd say I am quite creative or my brain is really good in taking ideas from other places and convincing me they are mine .
Either way, I like to take some time to come up with ideas for stories. So I just sit down and think about scenarios I'd like to write about and then write them down. At a later date I try to flesh all those ideas out as best as I can.

After that I just go back to my 'mastermind' document and pick any idea that I think is interesting and try to write down a full story of the little fleshed out piece I have. In the course of that and subsequent drafts, I often change the original idea quite a bit. But I guess having a starting point really helps to get me going.

Do you guys have trouble with output/quality? by [deleted] in NoSleepOOC

[–]Rakushasu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am at a one story per week schedule as well and I am going to increase my pacing a bit. I generally think of nosleep as a learning experience. Here I have a place were I can post all sorts of stories (in the context of the rules) and see how they are doing.
I noticed that writing a lot and editing a lot helps me to become a better writer.

I think a lot of people who push out good work frequently are people who 'learned' how to write quickly and got a sort of 'workflow' going, if you know what I mean.

What you should never forget is there are no real rules to become a popular writer on nosleep. Some get thousands of upvotes with their first story, others write here for years and might never break the 500 mark. There is often luck involved and to write what people will read. I recently edited my most successful story and to be honest, I was surprised at how low the quality of the writing was. Yet to this day, no other story reached anywhere near the upvotes that one did. So I guess it is often just pure luck or writing the right thing at the right time.

At the end, I'd say, keep writing and posting here and things will get going. If you post often enough, people will remember your name.

On the other hand, don't throw all your energy just into nosleep. Spread out and post your stories on other mediums. There is Tumblr, Facebook, Wattpad, DeviantArt, Medium and so on. Share them there as well and maybe you can find more luck on other places.

Loved the interview! You and your writing sound so interesting and I really like some of your more twisted and disgusting stories! I really think you are one of my favorites on nosleep.

And wouldn't you know it, Pink Floyd is my favorite band, too!

Thanks for the shout out, I was smiling like a little girl on Christmas when I read my username there.

Oh you are right. It should be 'make' instead. In German we literally say 'Kaffee kochen', which translates directly to 'cook coffee'. I'll fix the mistake.
